Saints trade thread...

Post: # 1760710Post skeptic »

Thought it would be worth having a thread just for trade talk and revelations on its own staying away from the other machinations of the club at the moment...

Very quiet day for the Saints...
Nothing on Hannebery, Kent, Hickey etc

About the only news I can gather is that our first round pick has officially been confirmed as number #4 that and Port have made their offer for Lycette which I dare say will influence what happens with Hickey.

Personally I hope WCE match as I prefer Tom to Lycett

Anyone got any scuttlebutt?

Good idea skeptic, one big thread would be better than 5 hanners threads, 4 hickey threads and 9 shiel threads.

Fingers crossed on Shiel today, but I still think he'll go to Carlton.

I’m not so sure about paying him that much money. It would make him the highest paid player in the comp, yes? That kind of money, if it’s 1.3 mill a year for six years is right up at the elite end of town. Martin, Buddy, Dangerfield...that class of player. Shiel is not really in that bracket is he?

I don't think it matters if it's fair to other gun players or not. If that's what it takes, that's what it takes. Some of those other players also had the opportunity to join us and take the money.

I agree. It seems like too much money. It reeks of desperation when we offer that much in comparison to the other clubs bidding.

So aside from being desperate name 3 things that would attract a player to St Kilda. I will even take bullet points at this time.

The other thing I’d point out... and I’m undecided here... we’ve been trying to recruit a gun mid for what, 5 years?

We just have to get it done

Agree it smells of desperation. Also agree we don’t have much else to offer at present apart from big money and that we’ve been in the market for a gun mid for years...so maybe we do just have to get it done. Leaves a bad taste though, being desperate and it’s a lot of resources to throw at one individual.

Maybe Lethers knows Shiel isn’t coming and just trying to screw Carlton over by making them over pay.

Shiel would want to particularly come to the Saints, as no matter where he goes, he will be rich young fella.

I think what you are trying to say is that it would be the 'other' factors that drag Shiel to the club (ie being a destination club) as the difference in the coin will not be significant.

$1.3 mill v $1.1 mill (after tax) only gives him approx. $100K more - in our world that is a lot - but in the world of a football ball player $2K a week is not much.

But even that can't sway these top shelf players

With "live" pick trading on draft night, what are people's thoughts on the Saints trying to split pick 4 or draft night for two first round picks?

Hypothetical...If one of Lukosis or Rankin is available at our first pick (#4) trade pick 4 to Adelaide for picks 7 & 14. Given Adelaide want to trade into the early part of the draft in order to secure one of the SA kids, this could be an opportunity for the Saints to secure two first rounders in a very strong draft.

Tell that to Dean Kent and Dan Hannebery

Dropping to pick 4 has not helped us. There are two top rated midfielders in the draft and if we had pick 3 we would have been guaranteed one of them. Now we could miss out on both

Like Miles & Ellis leaving Richmond for Gold Coast, some players will go for security and a chance to play senior football. Usually they are c-graders like Kent, in Hannebery we have a player who has been offered a superannuation fund by the saints.
