Team for 2019
Let's look at Gough Whitlams iconic "It's Time" theme and look for some change!
On the assumption we will secure Hannebery & Kent, I expect the team to look like this.
More of the same boring old line up with the same game plan + two additions.
B - Geary – Brown – McKenzie
HB - Savage – Carslile – Roberton
C - Newness – Ross – Hannebery
HF - Gresham – Bruce – Membrey
F - Long – McCartin – Billings
R – Longer – Steele – Steven
INT – Clarke –– Sinclair – Acres - Kent
EMG: Coffield –Austin – Battle
What I would like to see is some change.
Give #4 to GWS for Shiel & Setterfield and adjust whatever picks required to do the deal, let’s try something different.
B - Webster – Bruce – Roberton
HB - Sinclair – Carslile – Billings
C - Acres – Shiel – Setterfield
HF - Gresham – Membrey – Hannebery
F - Lonie – McCartin – Long
R – Hickey – Ross – Steven
INT – Clarke – Kent – Steele – Marshall
EMG: Coffield – Austin – Battle – Geary -
Make Brown a development coach and use Bruce or Austin who can mark, kick and provide rebound.
Yes, they may concede an additional goal or two but we got flogged last season with Brown in defence so why persist.
Using McKenzie and Geary out of half back caused too many turnovers.
I’m going with good field kicking ball users in Sinclair and Billings with Webster and Roberton.
All back 6 now use the ball reasonably well.
Big strong wingmen in Acres & Setterfield who can mark and have some explosive qualities.
Smaller forward line but rotating Marshall through there or Bruce or Carslile if necessary depending on opposition and two competent rucks with Marshall supporting Hickledik.
Hannebery & Gresham to work up high then transition deep into attack and lock it in with Lonie, Long & Kent to provide pressure and goals scoring opportunities.
Hard running ball winning mids with Shiel & Steven backed up by accumulator Ross and inside defensive mid Steele with rotations of Clarke, Gresham, Billings, Hannebery.
Had to start Steele on the bench so I could have Clarke, Kent & Steele all in a line.
Trade: Savage, Longer, Newness, Dunstan & Weller as they may have some value say trade up our 3rd rounder to 2nd round or 4th rounder to 3rd.
Shiel will not want to come, but offer the right deal to GWS for Shiel and Setterfield and with the money on offer Shiel might be swayed.

Ive been thinking along similar lines. Everyone seems to be sitting back for Shiel to nominate his preferred club. We arent going to come out as the preferred club.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Wed 03 Oct 2018 10:42am Shiel will not want to come, but offer the right deal to GWS for Shiel and Setterfield and with the money on offer Shiel might be swayed.
Why dont we put a hypothetical deal to GWS that they will want to accept. Then get GWS to help sway Shiel towards us by refusing to deal with other clubs unless they can trump our offer.

Re: Team for 2019
Not much GWS will want, other than maybe a high draft pick. They will want a ruck with Lobb going...but our two were previously 'wantaway' Victorians, so although Hickey has entertained a move West, would either want to go to GWS? If so, I can see finals in their future, but who knows if they'll ever make a GF??? And the two of them put together would probably total about a quarter of the deal GWS would accept.Zed wrote: ↑Wed 03 Oct 2018 3:31pmIve been thinking along similar lines. Re: Team for 2019
It's time for Geary to relieved of his role in defence. I'm happy for I'm to play a negative role on the opposition's speedy line breakers, but it's time that we had running defenders who can kick well and be creative.
My team? (assuming only Hanneberry and Kent are coming)
B Webster Brown Roberton
HB Savage Carlisle Coffield
C Gresham Ross Steven
HF Clark Bruce Acres
F Long Battle Membrey
R Hickey Hanneberry Steele
Inter: Geary Kent Billings Marshall
Emerg: Phillips Sinclair McCartin

Re: Team for 2019
My preferred 22 if we get through the trade period only landing Hannebery and Kent
B: Webster, Austin, McKenzie
HB: Coffield, Carlisle, Roberton
C: Acres, Steele, Ross
HF: Billings, Marshall, Gresham
F: Long, Bruce, Membrey
Foll: Hickey, Steven, Hannebery
Int: Battle, Clark, Sinclair, Smith
It was tough to pick a 22nd player worthy of a spot but I went with Battle, and I would use him in a roaming link-up role all over the ground - a bit like how we were going to use Roo on the wing until Richo got scared and moved him forward for the remainder of his final season. Having a tall, mobile contested marking player roaming the ground would help us coming out of defence and would allow us to keep some more structure in front of the ball and also hold our structure when Marshall has to go in the ruck.

By that reckoning Nathan brown is 2nd in the competition then. The 2018 Brownlow medal winner and the runner up didn't finish in that top 100 list....Does that put it in perspective or not?outside66 wrote: ↑Wed 03 Oct 2018 5:44pmI hate to burst your bubble but D-Mac actually ranked FIRST in the competition for effective disposals with 86.93%Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Wed 03 Oct 2018 10:42am

Re: Team for 2019
D-Mac nearly doubles Brown's disposal average (13.5 and 7.4 respectively) and the point was to highlight that D-Mac is a good user of the ball.chico2001 wrote: ↑Fri 05 Oct 2018 12:16amBy that reckoning Nathan brown is 2nd in the competition then. Re: Team for 2019
Playing off the half back flank he should be getting 20 good possessions, but he turns it over. A kick in hope type and similar to Geary as another poster highlighted. We said the same about Webster 2 years ago and now he is the same, just blazes away . Anyone can kick good backwards and forwards too each other under no pressure. Hopefully Dmac and Webster can hit some more targets 2019 because he has pace and can get the ball to a certain degree. Don't think Geary will ever be a good disposer of the ball.

You have Newnes on the bench and on the wing....I would have him HBF or preferably traded for a second rounder.Saintnickyroo wrote: ↑Sun 07 Oct 2018 11:15am B: Webster - Austin - Roberton

B McKenzie Austin Webster
HB Coffield Carlise Roberton
C Bruce Steele Sinclair
HF Billings Marshall Gresham
F Long McCartin Membrey
Foll Pierce, Hanneberry, Steven
Int Clarke, Ross, Lonie, Acres.
Em Battle, Paton, Savage, Phillips
Players who should also be pushing for gametime in the first few rounds
White, Rice Joyce, Clarvinio, Kent.
Id like to see Bruce used as a link man. Has great aerobic capacity, can take contested marks and is a good field kick. Hes no Roo but could play a similar role. Then can rest forward or back.
For something leftfield Id like to see Membrey tried in the middle a bit next year. See what he can do there. Rotate him and Acres forward and in the middle.
Put Sinclair back in the position he was good in and he'll be the player we know he can be.

Re: Team for 2019
There's a little bit more water to go under the bridge during this trade period & draft. But here we go:
FB Webster ?Bruce/Austin? Rice
HB Coffield Carlisle Roberton (if not fit McKenzie)
C Clark Steele Steven
HF Kent McCartin Long
FF Gresham Marshall Membery
R Pierce Billings Acres
INT from Hanabery, Battle, Phillips, Lonie or Sinclair
* No Ross.... that's right I'd be feeling out other clubs to see if there's any interest. Only if it gets us a round round pick
*Consider trading Newnes, McCartin, & Bruce
* Plus #4 draft pick - (guessing Bailey Smith or Max King, who later wont play next year. Would love Walsh)
* New captain - Steven
* Realise it's young - focus on development (something new)
* Let them play / enjoy their footy - totally new game plan (a game plan should be based around how you move the ball. Not reliant on the amount of pressure applied.
* No point playing Brown, Armo, Geary, Newnes every week.

Cannot see the captain missing out on a game regardless of his lack of ability. Battle will push his way in to that side real quick if the forwards you have picked dont fire very early in the season.stkfc1 wrote: ↑Sun 07 Oct 2018 7:39pm B McKenzie Austin Webster

The disposal efficiency % table is an absolute furphy if you are trying to prove that someone is a good user of the ball.groupie1 wrote: ↑Sun 07 Oct 2018 9:30pmGreat point... not sure why the knock on D-Mac's disposaloutside66 wrote: ↑Wed 03 Oct 2018 5:44pmI hate to burst your bubble but D-Mac actually ranked FIRST in the competition for effective disposals with 86.93%Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Wed 03 Oct 2018 10:42am

Is Nathan Brown the 2nd best user of the footy in the comp? He only has one kick every 45 minutes of game time.
Clearly these two are very ordinary kicks, so they are instructed to keep it very simple, sideways chip, handball to a better user.
I like D-Mac, but if he was elite user he wouldn't be going at 169 metres gained per match, equivalent of 4 kicks. Savage goes at 408 metres PM.

Re: Team for 2019
In the past it was totally justified however McKenzie really did turn a corner with his disposal later in the season. When he finally started to get the pace of the game and grew in confidence he started hitting targets on a much more regular basis. I think he has always been a pretty good kick of the footy when he's comfortable but has taken a while to get used to the pace of AFL footy. There's no doubting his intensity, courage, athleticism and aerial ability and I think he has finally gotten his ball use up to scratch as well.groupie1 wrote: ↑Sun 07 Oct 2018 9:30pmGreat point... not sure why the knock on D-Mac's disposaloutside66 wrote: ↑Wed 03 Oct 2018 5:44pmI hate to burst your bubble but D-Mac actually ranked FIRST in the competition for effective disposals with 86.93%Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Wed 03 Oct 2018 10:42am
