"Try being a St Kilda supporter"
Below is how Collingwood supporter Richard Hinds, a sports journalist writing for the ABC, rationalised the Pies GF loss on the ABC website. I have never liked his work and the way he speaks.
"'Try being a St Kilda supporter'
Of course, expressing your pain as a Collingwood supporter seldom elicits much sympathy. Decades of August triumphalism by a battalion of expectant Magpie fans has invited September schadenfreude from their opposition — even if this season's very likable team and their rejuvenated coach Nathan Buckley gained grudging respect.
But perhaps the most common response I encountered on Saturday when venturing that Collingwood was the true King of Pain was — "try being a St Kilda supporter".
And, quite rightly, fans of the foundation club that has won just one premiership in 122 mostly lean seasons (naturally, by one point against Collingwood in 1966) has strong claims to the throne.
Collingwood's grand final heartbreak against St Kilda's almost unrelenting futility was, as much as the grand final itself, the equation that proud but crestfallen Collingwood supporters pondered as they trudged from the MCG and into the soft Melbourne twilight.
Is it better to have played in so many losing grand finals or never to have played in them at all?
Personally, I choose taking a 25 stop ride to grand final disappointment than having your ticket punched in June or July and spending the back half of the season hoping you can cause the odd upset or sign a big-name recruit."
Surely that sort of condescending baiting from a despised enemy would energise even the most disengaged Board and Management. Perhaps a finals appearance in 2019 is fanciful, but we sure as heck should give Collingwood what for when we play them next. Pride, for heavens sake you people running the club, show some and a bit of grit and intelligence. Please.

Re: "Try being a St Kilda supporter"
Nope...I'd much rather follow the Saints self-destructive, 2 Dollar shop budget, boom/bust cycle than know we had the very best facilities, bags of money to buy top players, every business and media contacts under the sun, all the blockbuster games, stunningly soft draws, and still manage lose over half the finals you reach! I must admit, there was a lot to like about their team this year, but the Pies have dug their own ditch over generations through the behaviour of the club and their supporters...there is such thing as footy karma after all.

He's right, of course he's right
But we don't need to read about it or be told about it
We are the biggest sporting challenge by a street !
I would swap our pathetic history with theirs instantly
What I won't do EVER is give up or swap teams EVER !!
Fxxx everyone else !!
Go Saints !!!!

One premiership, over 50 years ago, just after decimal currency was introduced- not sure why I support this rabble, but I still do. One of life's great mysteries is a Saint supporter.

I guess some people will finally realise that there is more to life on a massive scale than your footy team making the 8 or GF every year.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Correct. All the more reason to enjoy them from now on. We actually had a really good run in the 90's and 00's.

Re: "Try being a St Kilda supporter"
Well, we actually had a very Collingwood-esque run for over a decade, should have taken out 1997 before spiralling into oblivion, unlucky in 2004, 2005 and 2006, missing out by small margins in 2009 and (sort of 2010). We were a powerful club for once, but couldn't sustain our run and somehow emerged with nothing to show.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Tue 02 Oct 2018 10:18am Correct. Re: "Try being a St Kilda supporter"
Poor old Richard Hinds is deluding himself if he thinks that he can use St Kilda as a vehicle to make him and Collingwood fans feel better. Collingwood lost a close grand final, plain and simple; it has nothing to do with St Kilda. Both are unrelated and mutually exclusive.
Denial, rationalisation, repression etc, it's a complicated game which people like to play to repress pain and suffering, but it never really works.
My advice to Hinds is for him to just get over his sour grapes and to just suck it up.

Re: "Try being a St Kilda supporter"
Yes there is such a thing as footy karma. We should know. Take your chances while they're there. Don't always assume there will be a next year and it can be a very long road back to being in contention once you've hit the decline.degruch wrote: ↑Tue 02 Oct 2018 9:46am Nope...I'd much rather follow the Saints self-destructive, 2 Dollar shop budget, boom/bust cycle than know we had the very best facilities, bags of money to buy top players, every business and media contacts under the sun, all the blockbuster games, stunningly soft draws, and still manage lose over half the finals you reach! Re: "Try being a St Kilda supporter"
we've seen four grand finals since the afl as a national comp. that's more than most, so his point about getting there rather than missing out is perhaps aimed more at clubs like freo, carlton, richmond, the dogs, melbourne, etc. unfortunately most just look at gfs as the be all and end all of success. as a vfl team we sucked, but as an afl team we've been okay.

Re: "Try being a St Kilda supporter"
I’m pretty sure that Richard Hinds has used this line of reasoning before. He really needs to get some new material.
Richard, I hope you get over your pain and suffering real soon. In the meantime, this is just for you, Richard...

Re: "Try being a St Kilda supporter"
Richard Hinds’ article is not one of his best. I see him on Offsiders now and again, but don’t particularly like or dislike him. However, John Harmes ( a Geelong supporter) I DO like listening to.... very generous of spirit, a real warm hearted guy who I always enjoy reading and listening to
