St Kilda's AFL trade wish list: How Saints can bring in the stars and stay in the draft

Written ByTHE ROVER

St Kilda’s made it clear it’s in the market to bring some experienced talent to Moorabbin in the upcoming trade period, which has seen the Saints connected to just about every player rumoured to be on the move.

There’s no doubt the list could do with an overhaul, but there’s not a lot to be traded out, and with only one draft pick in the first three rounds there’s not much currency there either.
So I thought I’d have a look at how St Kilda can make the most of what it’s got to get the best of what it needs from the players rumoured to be available.

Firstly, who have the Saints been connected to?
Dan Hannebery, currently contracted to Sydney Swans.
Andrew Gaff, restricted free agent at West Coast Eagles.
Dylan Shiel, currently contracted at GWS Giants.
Aaron Hall, out of contract at Gold Coast Suns.
Daniel Menzel, restricted free agent at Geelong Cats.
Jared Polec, out of contract at Port Adelaide Power.
Jordan Roughead, restricted free agent at the Western Bulldogs.
To be honest, there’s more, but this is enough and they’re not getting them all anyway.

Hannebery wants to be at St Kilda and the Saints want him, so that’s going to happen.

Polec, Gaff and Shiel are much of a muchness and will all be expensive, so we’re just going to target one of them.
Gaff is too pricey so let North Melbourne have him, Polec is too unreliable so the Roos can take him too.
Shiel is the youngest and the best of the trio, an absolute gun who will lift St Kilda’s midfield in a flash, so we’re going all out to get the mini-Ben Affleck lookalike.

Hall is an accumulator that can be picked up cheap and, hopefully, taught to be accountable, so we’re putting him in the shopping basket.

Roughead and Menzel are free agents and the Saints have got buckets of money, so we’re taking them too, especially as the forward line needs some serious work.

What have we got to pay for all this? Well, like I said, Roughy and Menzel just need dollars and no trades, so that’s handy.

Then we’ve got pick three in this year’s draft and future picks that, to be perfectly honest, I’d rather keep hold of because this rebuild will need a bit added to it in 12 months time.

So we need to find tradable players.
Blake Acres? Jack Billings?
Hmmm, maybe, but those guys have shown they’ve got something to offer yet still only have limited trade appeal to other clubs, so I’m going the whole hog and putting Paddy McCartin out there.

Okay, losing Paddy leaves Josh Bruce and Tim Membrey as our key forwards which, to be honest, is dangerous (especially to the fans sitting eight rows back on the forward flank), but McCartin’s delivered little and doesn’t look like turning that around any time soon, yet still has trade value being a young, number one draft pick, so it’s bye-bye Macca.

Who wants him?

Sydney is crying out for another key forward to help out Buddy. Sam Reid is good but he’s injury prone. Tom McCartin will be good but he’s still only 18 and three years away from being ready to rock.
Bring Paddy in now and the Swans get that second tall, they also get the McCartin brothers together and stave off the otherwise inevitable homesickness concerns, and Patrick gets away from the limelight and pressure of being a failing top draft pick in a Melbourne-based team.

So Paddy McCartin to Sydney for Dan Hannebery and the Swans’ second-rounder, currently pick 31.
Then we’re forwarding that pick straight to Gold Coast for Aaron Hall.
Bang!
A contested ball beast and an outside running mid for a misfiring forward.

We’re not finished yet though.
The Giants love an early draft pick, so we’re giving them pick three for Dylan Shiel and their second-rounder, pick 23.
Too much to ask for in return? They’ll take it. They’re not getting pick three from Essendon or Hawthorn and we want to stay in the draft, so it’s time for the Saints to play hard ball.

With this bloody good midfield taking shape it’s easy to talk Menzel and Roughead to coming over.
Do we really want Roughead you ask? Well, he’s coming cheap, he’s versatile – can play forward, back or in the ruck – and there’s another little twist in the tail.
‘Coz we’re going double-Rough!
That’s right, Jarryd Roughead’s coming over too – another free agent and we’ll promise him a assistant coaching position when he’s finished playing.

So what have we done here?

In comes Dylan Shiel, Dan Hannebery and Aaron Hall to a midfield that’s lost nothing. Boom!
In comes Daniel Menzel, Jarryd Roughead and Jordan Roughead to a forward line that’s lost Paddy McCartin. Boom!
And we may have lost pick three but we still come into the draft early at 23. Pop!
You’re welcome!

I would be OK with a McCartin trade.
Jack Newnes would slot in beautifully at Sydney.
Dunstan. Lonie. Hickey. Longer. Weller. SInclair. Even Arma.

Remember we have already delisted a LOT. Freeman, Gilbert, Wright, Minch & Goddard.

Sydney must be literally kicking themselves for letting Membrey go. I don't know why that doesn't get any coverage.

I'm still somewhat perplexed by the Hannebery situation.

Why the f*** does he want to come to St.Kilda?..apart from the money.

I mean seriously, we are a dead set rabble.

Good lord...well, points for creativity. IMO, we certainly don't want or need Roughy or Menzel, why would we fold to North when we have cash, Swans won't be interested in a lop-sided trade like that, and Carlton have a higher pick for Shiel than us.

Gaff obvious as an FA would be good

wouldnt balk at Sheil - although keen to use our first pick

late pick or rookie the zebs ruck Mclean ?

Is there talk about Darcy Moore ? would do that

what happened to this guy - Michael Coombe -has a few great highlight reels

trade - Hickey, Longer, Mc cartin - some or all of dunstan , lonie, newnes, savage, weller

It should be just Shiel and Gaff, we shouldn't be looking at anyone else. Hanneberry is a mistake.
Dunstan gets more contested ball than Aaron Hall does - about 4 or 5 more contetsted possessions/game - and is 4 or 5 years younger - so I'm not sure what sort of "contested beast" he is.

We need skilled outside midfielders, that are elite and penetrating kicks.

Our recruiters are pathetic.

happy with hannebery - depending on the cost - paying his wages seems like most of the cost hopefully

Obviously will need to trade out a fair bit for the above and won't be able to get them all -

but happy to trade - Hickey, Longer, Mc cartin - some or all of dunstan , lonie, newnes, savage, weller

I think they were referring to Hannaz as the contested beast.

My guess is we get Hanners for next years second rounder
Take Rankine or Smith in the draft
Get two second round picks for Hickey and Dunstan
Get a early third for Lonie.

Ah BUST!

Jordan Roughead is simply not that good.

Menzel. We already have Membrey and playing both would mean that we would lack pressure in our forward line.

Jarryd Roughead? Guy is almost cooked.Even with Paddy going we have Bruce, Battle and Marshall to be developed.

So I do not see the sense in bringing in 3 questionable players. One not good enough, another likely soon to be not good enough and a guy who is sometimes good enough when sometimes fit.

The Rougheads. Seriously. Cmon.
Menzel, don't need him. Too Risky.

Must keep our first pick. Next year's though, i would consider.

Really keen on Sheil, just comming into his prime.

With the new coaching staff coming in I'd be happy to get one gun, no offense hannenberry rather than a broken player who was a gun. And then train up or current players as well as pick 4. We do have talent it just isn't tapped.
The last thing anyone wants is to get ride of list cloggers only to replace them with more expensive versions

Pick #3 for Sheil with #23 coming back
Do it now! Talk about paying unders, deal of the century. Let them keep #23 and give us Setterfield as well.

There is no future in Roughead or Menzel, no thanks.

Seriously concerned what we have to give up for Hannebery.

Get quality or ride the course.

At last a voice of reason, Hannebery will be a massive mistake, spot on - we need elite ball users with pace, not slow banged up inside mids who couldnt hit a barn with a bucket of wheat
