Mc Cartin
After watching how important Jeremy MCGovern was on the weekend I couldn't help but wonder whether Paddy would suit a similar role down back?
They are both similar in their physical make-up and share similar traits in that Paddy reads the play better than most (it's just that no one kicks it to his advantage as a forward), uses the ball really well around the ground, and can take a strong grab. I reckon he should spend a summer in the backline and leave the forward line to the likes of Marshall, Membrey, Battle, and Bruce.
I find it abit strange that he hasn't been trialled down back at all yet but then again, creativity on the whiteboard isn't the strongest suit of ours...

Re: Mc Cartin
While McGovern doesn't look overly athletic and bears some physical resemblence to Mccartin ie: he's not very toned - thats where the resemblence finishes I reckon. He looks to cover the ground pretty well and looks way more athletic than maccartin in real life. BY all means, I'm not averse to trying anything when it comes to Mccartin, But i do'nt think he'd run nearly as well as J Mcgovern...just my opinion.outside66 wrote: ↑Tue 11 Sep 2018 4:31pm After watching how important Jeremy MCGovern was on the weekend I couldn't help but wonder whether Paddy would suit a similar role down back?

Re: Mc Cartin
Assuming Dylan is fit and healthy I'd prefer him and Jake in the backline with Logan or Nathan as the third tall. We can't have 3 blokes playing loose looking to intercept. We need a few blokes that can actually defend.

Re: Mc Cartin
This is actually the issue. As a poster mentioned above - Joey M has been calling for this since mid-season. I reckon I thought about it mid-last year after one of his concussions - mainly as when you're playing with the ball in front of you you're a lot less susceptible to getting knocked out (although Paddy does have a knack of getting that done in unique circumstances). In any case - I still like the idea although it's now like we're trying to find spots to hide Paddy.
In all reality - a forward line of Membrey, Battle and Bruce or Marshall is way more dynamic that one with Paddy in it - mainly as, if Marshall is played - at least he can relief ruck (Bruce - btw - is possibly the worst fwd/ruck in AFL history) but Bruce can at least run all day and present up. Paddy as I see it - it pretty much just mark and kick and not great if the ball hits the deck and can't relief ruck due to fitness.
My hope for Paddy's AFL career is that if the much talked-about 6/6/6 rule change comes in then, perhaps that will result in more space in the F50 and one-on-one contests which should suit Paddy. If not - I have zero idea where to play him
Go you red, black & white warriors

Totally agree Mc Govern is way better when the ball hits the deck, reads the play better & much is more agile than Paddy IMO, but still wouldn't hurt to give him a go down back ,lets face it he hasn't exactly set the word on fire up forward has he.

Re: Mc Cartin
He is not mobile or tall enough to play the McGovern role. Its time the club stop making excuses and finding games for Paddy and made him earn his place on merit.
For what its worth IMO Paddy will end as another Elshaugh recruiting disappointment, similiar to his class mate in Goddard.

Re: Mc Cartin
His weaknesses will be exposed in the back line just as much as is currently evident in the forward line.....no mobility, does not have good hands and a very ordinary kick. If he wasn't a no.1 pick, I'd be surprised if he got a game.....not best 22.Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Tue 11 Sep 2018 6:12pm He is not mobile or tall enough to play the McGovern role. He might not be in Sandy's best 22 either, he could always play at Frankston like Lewis did in 2018.silverhalo wrote: ↑Tue 11 Sep 2018 9:49pmHis weaknesses will be exposed in the back line just as much as is currently evident in the forward line.....no mobility, does not have good hands and a very ordinary kick. The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Mc Cartin
In the current era power forwards are a dying breed.
Forwards need to be fast and athletic.
They need to be able to apply pressure to keep the ball in the forward line.
When we have the ball they need to be able to press forward quickly or run laterally to facilitate switch plays.
When the opposition have the ball they need to be able to run back quickly to our defensive 50 to block holes or pick up opponents.
Paddy has none of this attributes, he came with a health issue and has acquired another health issue with his concussion.
Paddy is an old style contested mark key forward.
Defences with floating McGovern type defenders can easily pick him off and once the ball hits the ground he is basically out of the play.
Just explain again to me why we used a #1 pick on him?

Re: Mc Cartin
Well... Paddy is going to need an epic pre season just to have a chance to resuscitate his career. He’s barely in the best 22 of a team that finished bottom 4. Does he even have any trade currency?

I'd suggest that he has no currency
What team would want a type one diabetic with no tank, lumbering around the forward line, unable to mark.
It was a draft epic fail.
Try to trade... but if there are no suckers willing to buy the magic beans, stick in the vfl or just delist.

Re: Mc Cartin
No way to Paddy down back.
Paddy lacks the speed, athleticism, height, mobility and tank to run with the gun big forwards of the comp.
We have an intercept marking back in Carslile, what role does Paddy play?
Could play on a Hawkins & maybe a Paton & Jenkins, but how would he go on the following?
Daniher - to quick, tall, agile and vertical leap
Buddy - to fast, strong and mobile
Lynch - to big, fast and too much endurance
Hipwood - would run him into oblivion in the first 1/4
Cox - way too tall and leap
Reiwolt - would run and jump him ragged
Kennedy - too fast explosive and strong
Walker - too fast and mobile
Cameron - too fast and mobile
Dixon - too big, fast and strong
Brown - too tall fast and vertical leap
Hogan - too fast & mobile not to mention the hybrid type key forwards like Curnow.
Paddy has to develop as a key marking forward, that is his only potential role in AFL football, albeit a very narrow avenue to a career given his current fitness and health challenges.

in total agreement with joffa. For Paddy the options are a key forward or bust.

Re: Mc Cartin
worth a shot in the backline. My concern would be his ability to pick it up off the deck.
He would benefit greatly to learn how to play as a backman. Fraser Gehrig style. Use that knowledge to become a better forward.

The GTrain was extremely quick and was a gun junior athlete.
Paddy lacks speed and endurance and IMO could not play down back.

Re: Mc Cartin
Sorry, but I just think Paddy is not going to make it. For a bigger player, he has to have at least one strong attribute, and getting the contested ball needs to be one, but he seems to have lost the one-grab marking he once had since he went down with injuries/ concussions. I would love to see him take a huge step, but it aint going to happen.

Re: Mc Cartin
I think he plays better up the ground, transition type play. He seems to mark and kick better when he gets a grab at high half forward and and can free wheel a bit. Just not cut out to be a gun full forward though despite posters saying he was recruited as a high marking, good kicking key forward. I think one more year should be it for him if he fails to deliver. Remember he has come back" fit as a buck rat" in the last 2 pre- seasons, yet has not delivered.Cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
