Re: SAY WHAT? Jack Steven to leave the Saints?!!
Reminds a little of Richmond trading out deludio
Up until and including that point everyone thought Richmond had completely blown that trading year...following the dids move they were able to bring in some quality (Prestia) and some very handy later pick trades eg caddy and nankervis
Completely changed their team
Not drawing comparisons between lists here - more just the opportunity that can come from making hard decisions especially as it relates to currency of heart and soul players

Re: SAY WHAT? Jack Steven to leave the Saints?!!
Say this to that:
Geelong Coach has fibbed about Geelong approaching Jack. Naughty on prime time. Of course Whately let that go without challenge and Richo was passively agreeable as usual.
Very poor that Saints, especially Richo, didn't know before exit interviews that Jack was disgruntled. More evidence AR is out of touch, lacks emotional intelligence and/or averse to a hard chat.
Jack would be silly to go to Geelong, Selwood, Ablett and Dangerfield hog the ball; he would not get the freedom or opportunity he gets now. In any case Geelong are not GF bound before Jack loses his pace in a year or so. Money would have to be phenomenal unless he can no longer stand being coached by Richo.
The fact that Jacky of all people are seriously questioning the clubs direction under Richardson and Finnis is troubling and confirms our impressions from outside the goldfish bowl. Richo claims Jack was much happier when he left than when he came in to the exit interview. I hope that doesn't mean it convinced him that there is no hope under Mr 20% and he left with a clear decision to go.

Re: SAY WHAT? Jack Steven to leave the Saints?!!
If we look at the one glaring question about the Saints over the last 5 years or so, and especially the last two is the delivery of the football inside 50. Jack Steven is a favourite of mine, and so is Ross, but in delivering the ball neither are a Robert Harvey. Both this year have been very ordinary at it, and if not traded, should have different roles found for them.
I don't want to see Jack go any more than most, but there's a young bloke playing for the druggies reserves atm that can run hard and kick. I can't remember his name, but some of our blokes haven't improved in this area, get them out and keep trying new people

What will be more upsetting is the reason why he wants out will still be at the club.

I'd be tempted for their first rounder and Nakia Cockatoo. However, I don't think Jack's going anywhere unless its an offer we couldn't refuse, like a deal that got us Shiel.

Brisbane have offered me packet of kettle chips and at least six wins next year.
We're still at loggerheads over the flavour of the chips.

I know a young bloke who follows Brisbane ( his whole family used to to be Fitzroy supporters) but he had never been to a granny and he purchased an AFL membership with GWS as his chosen club. Did it in 2017 and again this year because he thought they'd be a good chance to make the GF. Cheeky bugger

Re: SAY WHAT? Jack Steven to leave the Saints?!!
As I told you earlier the cats cannot trade their first round pick in 2019.. the AFL changed the rules ... I read it somewhere but here it is from the cats web site this has been told to clubs since 2015..
Mitch Cleary - AFL Media

THE FULL price of recruiting Patrick Dangerfield, Lachie Henderson, Gary Ablett and Zach Tuohy will be realised as soon as this year, with Geelong preparing to be hamstrung in future trading scenarios.
Having not taken a single first-round pick since 2014, the Cats will be forced to activate two first-round selections over the next two drafts to adhere to new AFL rules.
The AFL this week confirmed to AFL.com.au that unless a club has acquired two first-round picks between 2015-2018, it cannot trade away its first-round selection for 2019.
Clubs have been aware of the rolling four-year restriction since 2015 which will be enacted for the first time next season.
As a result, Geelong will need to stump up a second first-round selection in this year's draft or face the prospect of entering 2019 with its hands tied on its opening pick.
After netting Dangerfield (2015 pick), Henderson (2016 pick), Ablett and Tuohy (2017 picks) through trades, any future offers for non-free agents will need to involve current Cats or picks outside the first round.

Re: SAY WHAT? Jack Steven to leave the Saints?!!
Geelong only hope is to obtain a pick from WC or Freo for Kelly in the first round and look to use that. Steven contracted and therefore for once we hold the whip hand. Could ask for overs but cannot see it happening. More a lazy journo starting a rumour because Geelong just crashed out of the finals again and Steven originally from down that way.

Agree. Look at Nathan Jones at Melbourne. He was the only gun player in a terrible team for many years. He's now playing and winning finals at age 30.

Re: SAY WHAT? Jack Steven to leave the Saints?!!
so the saints trade out our best player for a first round pick.
Use that first round pick to obtain Hannebery from the Swans
Hannebury a year younger than Jack, but essentially same/same for age profile
Jack amungst the fastest players at the Saints
Hannebery would be lucky to beat me in a foot race.
Hannebery body is broken (or slowly breaking)
Cant think of any issues with Jack body
Well done Saints. Looking after your players will really attract that big name recruit.

Re: SAY WHAT? Jack Steven to leave the Saints?!!
No, not at all.
I've been saying for quite a while that I believe a lack.of a good, solid senior group of players is our biggest concern.
That will naturally correct itself in the next 12-18 months (depending on list management) or will be fast tracked with Hannebury, etc.
Our list will be good enough to be in the top 8 in terms of ability and age demographic within 2 years.
Then of course, we need to cross our fingers that we play a style that facilitates rather than stifles the development of our young guys.
That, combined with the addition of a star or two will be the difference between being a top 6-8 team, or a top 4 team.
Just my opinion.

Port Adelaide topped up with some reasonable talent as did Essendon in the off season and both fell short of finals this year.
The question is will the current coaching group be able to develop Acres, Billings, Dunstan, Coffield, Clarke to reach the level required to hit your mark. Then we need to recruit the couple of stars.
I hope you are correct but I can't see a return to finals action in a 2-3 year period unless we overhaul the coach and list.
