How do you develop young guns though, without good senior players around them?
they have the opportunity to step up and become leaders themselves...don't need or want discards..we need to build from the bottom up.we are rock bottom ..get rid of the rubbish, get some decent coaches, selectors and people that are able to improve the stocks we have rather than have them go backwards. Concentrate on that more than worry about bringing has beens into the team. Maybe kicking coach? that would be it.
I agree with the theory.

However it just seems to be a fact that teams that seem to develop their youth well, also have a good, solid senior group.

And those that don't - seem to not be able to develop their kids well.

Melbourne added Lewis and Hibberd and Vince.

Carlton's young guys looked really promising when Murphy, Simpson and Gibbs were all up and about last year. Without those guys this year (excluding Simpson) they instantly appear s*** and years away from coming good.

That's why Sydney seem to find these gems all the time, ditto Hawthorn. And even Geelong too - the common denominator is that these clubs rebuild whilst having good, solid senior players still in the team.

Even North have Ziebell, Tarrant, Thompson, Cunnington, Higgins and Goldstein - and hey presto! A rubbish list can perform and young guys look to be developing really well.

FWIW, I think we'll be in that situation in 18 months time when our senior group is Roberton, Steven, Carlisle and Bruce. That will coincide with our current young guys being genuine 100 gamers, and the really young guys that have just come in in the past year or two be in that 50 game bracket.

I think we'll be a good team then.

But.....there's a big chance that by then, guys like Dunstan, McCartin, Billings, Acres etc. will be ruined as footballers like Jack Watts and Trengrove are.

So I really think we need at least one guy like Goddard to play a season with us next year. It'll help in the long run in my opinion.

Not a good snr player anymore and certainly not a leader!!!!!

No Thanks!!!!!

Agree with you on the kicking coach but the only problem with that is our current one, Dixon, has another two years to run on his contract.

Saw that the dud tipped against us against the Hawks too.

Talk about having a bit of faith and a touch of loyalty.

I think you have already touched on it .. Carlisle and Steven are 2 that would already be leader material.

Just thinking. Goddard really had a s*** time at Essendon overall since leaving the Saints. First the entire drugs scandal then he only ends up playing in one final (where they got totally belted) before being given the arse today. He played at a drama riddled and underperforming club his entire time basically.

Oh well, at least he got his extra 100-200k a year at Essendon.

From the Age.

"Although Saints' veteran Leigh Montagna told Fox Footy on Tuesday he thought his former club should consider Goddard, Fairfax Media understands the Saints have other priorities at this stage with the club expected to be aggressive during the upcoming trade period."

Phew. Thank god for that.

So let's move on. Nothing to see here luckily.

But who's been teaching them?

They're not going to be great leaders until they either play 250 games or have a champion leader around them to mentor them.

And that's exactly why we suck so badly.

Interesting thread with lots of sucking and Bjs🙄

Someone noted that Goddard was skipper of the Bummers but that was coz he was the only senior player who wasn’t drugged up and the rest were out suspended lol

they have been around long enough now and you can't tell me that the younger ones wouldn't respect Jack. even so there are far better options than BJ out there.

If he costs nothing and really wants to come, what's the problem?

I'm just amused. When he left at the end of 2013 there were people on here saying he
was cooked, that the medical team was saying he'd be lucky to play another two
seasons because of his knees ... and here we are in 2019 arguing over whether we should
draft him again.

He'll be off to Freo I expect - and an assistant coach there, the year after.

I think it’s ignorant to think that BJ couldn’t offer us something with where we are currently at.

In terms of senior guys on our list we have
Gilbo & Armo who are both likely to be gone
Geary
Steven who doesn’t really like to be the leader
Carlisle who hasn’t been at the club that long and also didn’t come to the club in a heap of glory
Ross - Has really only been at this level for two or so years.

We clearly have a lack of leaders who DEMAND the respect of the younger players.

BJ might be a little older now, but so is Hodge. Hodge doesn’t keep up with his man as much, plays loose across the backline but he brings the best out of those young cubs up there.

If he comes for nothing and we don’t have any better options, I wouldn’t hate having BJ return.

The number 18 will likely be vacant for him as well.

He'll go to Fremantle.
They have just re-signed Ballantine, Sandilands and Bennell. They have also kept Fyfe and a couple of their other veterans may or may not be re-contracted for next year too. They are doing a Clayton's rebuild.
We need to move forward and stop looking back.

We need to try get old cooked players OUT of the team (Gilbo, Geary, Brown, Armo) not bringing more IN!

We don't need him. Our backline is the one line we already have enough mature players

I think people think Goddard is better than he is or is the player of old. We have a fairly old back line already at present Brown Geary Carlisle savage Robertson Bilbo are closer to 30 than 20 so why put in another old guy. Who is he going to lead as he will take up a place for a young player

The leadership style Goddard so provocatively displayed at Essendon recently probably sealed his fate.
It didn't look like Hurley was impressed, in the last incident i remember.

Not sure what that style of leadership teaches players, especially when he makes errors himself.

Anyway, we couldn't afford the lollies required to assist his dummy spits.

There is life after football for BJ. he could always apply for a job as a traffic cop. :P :P

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I'm not sure how an aggressive trade period has any impact on signing a delisted free agent?
