Geary got used how he should
Played a tagging shut down role on Smith and kept him to 16 disposals. This is how he needs to be used from now on. He is super fit and determined. IMO, he needs to play a role most weeks like he did tonight.

What happened to Geary in the last quarter?
Agree the shut down role was effective. Actually, we played a man-on-man game and it worked better than the zone defense.

He got concussed and ruled out. I really like that role he plays as he still gets a bit of the footy himself.

Agreed. The coach's use of Geary is simply terrible.parkeysainter wrote: ↑Sat 18 Aug 2018 11:20pm Played a tagging shut down role on Smith and kept him to 16 disposals. To be fair, Geary has had to plug a few holes this year, isn't Roberton usually the loose/interceptor?rodgerfox wrote: ↑Sun 19 Aug 2018 3:26pmAgreed. Re: Geary got used how he should
Geary playing loose is a disaster.
Geary locking down on a small forward is alright.
Geary tagging a midfielder is Clint Jones all over again.
The bloke can only be used as a lock down defender. Otherwise do not select.

Would have made a fine soldier in the Ross Lyon teams. ie would have been an upgrade on Baker. Newnes would have been an upgrade on Eddy.

Agre, but very hard on Clint who:
- was very quick
- hanballed quite well
- won a lot of his own ball (as opposed to a loose defender who is ofen given it)
Fully agree.

Very unfair. Played a brilliant game on Smith. Shut him right out of the game.

Agree last night was good, over the course of the season he hasn’t been too flash. Maybe last night shows that’s how he should have been played the whole season.

Re: Geary got used how he should
100% agree, keep him away from half back, his kicking and decision making is not good enough there he could even play as a negating half forward, he would be better at it than Wellerparkeysainter wrote: ↑Sat 18 Aug 2018 11:20pm Played a tagging shut down role on Smith and kept him to 16 disposals. Re: Geary got used how he should
Yes the commentators said, it was picked up when Margetts made the howler and gave the free against Gears. Gears told him that he had been shocking all year. And Margetts was supposed to have retorted: what all year, that’s harsh!
Good on you Geary for having a go at him. He’s the ump who is not to umpire so many matches in WA anymore. H3’s been the worst one, I would hazard as a guess, who is susceptible to ‘the noise of affirmation’, especially in Eagles matches, moreso than Freo games.

Re: Geary got used how he should
Steven Baker was underrated by many, too many it seems. He was four times the footballer that Jarryn Geary is. First, he could kick both feet and he could handpass both hands. Second, he could take a contested over head mark because he had a leap. Third, he had pace enough to keep up with most "fast" small forwards. Fourth, he was an excellent reader of the game. Finally, and seemingly the only quality foes and some friends seem to recall, he was as tough as nails. The last characteristic is the only one that Jarryn Geary has by comparison. He seeks to make up for the rest with a total disregard for his own health - good in some ways, but not much good if you are on the bench due to concussion.
