Lonie.

Post: # 1751051Post stkfc1 »

Take a bow young man. Schneider MkII?
Is looking more like an AFL player every week. I was one of his many knockers but will give credit where its due. With Long and Gresham, we have a nice little mosquito fleet coming through. They have the skills to be formidable forward line, just need the consistent execution of that elusive good F50 entry!
Next year
Battle Paddy Lonie
Long Bruce/ M King* Membrey
Gresham Billings Marshall rotating through middle and forward.
Bruce/ M. King* and Paddy will demand the 1st and 2nd defender which means Membrey, Battle and Marshall can get off the leash.
Marshall is going to be good. He'll start clucking those ones he's missing at the moment and will be a weapon. Battle will also find life a little easier getting the 4th or 5th defender. There are signs there, thats what matters.

* Unless GC take both bros, dont be surprised if this happens. No ITK, just a feeling.

early in the year I thought Sinclair was good and Lonie was crap, but it was visa versa tonight

Lonie was great but wished didn’t play on and took his kick late in the last quarter.

I do not like Lonie but tonight I had a big piece of humble pie. I still tink his defence is terrible and he can not tackle to save himself. 71 kgs is simply to light. But tonight it was between him and steele for best St Kilda player

Just turned 22 this week and, all year, most on this forum have written him off. The last three weeks have shown he has what it takes to make the grade.

I commented after the NAB Cup match at Morwell that Lonie has smarts that can't be taught. I reckon our coaching panel as tried to rid all our players of individual flair, Gresham being the exception. We look much better with Lonie and Gresh being allowed to use their natural flair, a la Milney.

Jack more than paid his way tonight.

Not convinced about Little Lord Fauntleroy yet but I love being wrong about such things.

Re Lonie

Many on this site need to eat a bit of humble pie.

He can kick a goal, gives chase, is a bit inventive.

Shouldn't be the whipping boy any more.

His tackling has got better and hasnt got much fear, but the bigger blokes can break his tackles. Needs to kick 2 goals a game and lay 7/8 tackles consistently.

Just as impressive as those goals was the way he totally committed himself to a few hardball contests.
Fantastic stuff.

But where has that been all year?

I think Lonie's been somewhat consistent since he was recently re-injected back into the team...good on him, I never doubted his endevour, just his ability to pull it off. I really hope he's coming good, as I reckon he's got a new contract sewn up (possibly with us).

I really wish he'd backed himself for that last kick though, it was a fantastic mark!

I am not a Lonie fan either but I also have to say he played very well tonight.

Still, I am not sold on him yet. Long on the other hand.....

He’s a lot more confident with the ball at the moment. He always seemed to get it and just throw it on the boot. Kicking for goal is much better as well.

Have to agree. I really believed he should be delisted, but he is finally showing some signs. Jury still out but was very good last night.

Coincidently we had Pierce making good ruck contests, Steele starred and Long is a real forward presence, as was Membrey. So maybe goes to show the flow on effect of having those players going well, it brings in opportunities for Jack L. He was excellent last night and will now have defence coaches looking at him closer so will need to prepare for that. Some of the Irishman's defending was a bit dismissive and he paid for it.

His last 4 weeks have been very good.
Around 20 disposals and 2 + goals per game.
Growing in confidence and probably feeling more secure in the team.

A long way to go but he is in a positive curve and hopefully can maintain this form.

Needs to stick a couple more tackles and eradicate the silly things he does from time to time.

I understand people’s frustration with Lonie but I have always thought he’d make it as a player.
He hasn’t yet but he’s now on the right path.

Must be offered a new contract for next year and if not would have to get picked up by another club.

Good on the young fella, keep it up!

One of our better players this season and doing his job as a small forward- his attitude and attack on the contest are at the top end of the team IMO. I felt like he, and Minch needed to get games and settle, and would be good for us, but Richo hasn't shown faith in Minch.

Have to agree with most here. I had him as one of the ones that would not be at the Saints next year. He showed more of his early form. Have to admit I was wrong. He deserves an extension based on his form of late.

They looked soft to me as well when I was at the ground watching it live, but I just watched the replay of the whole match and they were there. He actually played a very smart game and outwitted the Irishman on a couple of occasions ( maybe that's not that hard to do  ). The real test is to back it up consistently and I don't think a lot of players will get sucked in or grab him over the shoulder or push him the way Connor did - there's no need to panic up against a midget in a marking contest

Anyhow, I was really impressed that he kicked a goal from about 50 metres out. That was his first and I think that really gave him confidence for the night.

As far as a contract is concerned, I would not be surprised if he got an extra year, but it would be wrong giving him more than that. We could rookie him as well. How many rookies can you have?

Seriously? He's one of the few guys on our team that has spark, and can kick a goal.

I'd offer him 2 years. But I have always been a fan.
