Saints target Menzel
Please tell me that this is a sick joke
A guy that can hardly get on the park and provides zero forward pressure. Better off with Weller or Lonie

Dan Menzel ?

Really?
Lycett and Gaff I can understand, Polec even ...but Hannebury and Menzel? At least Menzel would be on relatively little $$$
Why are our so-called "targets" so goddamn public?
Why can't we check out these players without it being news?

Re: Saints target Menzel
Really? What the hell does he bring to the table? We already have Membrey and Battle whi can at least stay on the park for 5 minutes. If we were pushing for top 2 next year maybe a s he has some xfactor but in our current situation, Menzel is not what what we need. This is surely a joke unless the club has its eye on someone else down there and they're shakng the tree a bit.

Daniel Menzel
According to Channel 7 news we’ve offered him a multi year deal. Thoughts?

Re: Saints target Menzel
It's a good move but what happened last year? What was stopping our genius football department from offering Menzel a 3 year contract at the end of last year?
Why are the Saints 1 or 2 years behind in trends and why do we just try and copy other clubs when we should be setting our own agenda?
Dogs recruit Tom Boyd so we go for a KPF at pick 1 in the national draft ( don't worry that he has type 1 diabetes,..."he'll be a beauty" ). Dogs play the manic pressure and fast handball game in 2016 so we follow suit ( doesn't matter that they have half a dozen top 10 draft picks with elite skills to execute that gameplan, we'll just wing it and see how we go ).
Magpies retain their senior coach and follow the Richmond model so the Saints jump the gun and extend senior coach's contract ( did Hardwick and Buckley have a win loss ratio as low as Richo? )
Hawks start getting return on their O'meara investment and Saints have finally got Freeman on the park and debuting in the AFL. Saints like targeting the obvious, so they reckon Daniel Menzel might be some type of symbolic bait that we can use to finally lure some big fish ( ah...sorry....get in line because there are probably half a dozen clubs in front of us )

Re: Saints target Menzel
At least he can kick straight. f*** me, it seems Lethers is into everyone.
If he costs bugger all then he might be worth it. Injuries are an unknown though.
Might be better off targeting Fasolo who wants out IMO.

Surely that is a typo - didn't you mean the Hawks getting a return on their O'Rourke investment ????Scollop wrote: ↑Mon 13 Aug 2018 8:11pm It's a good move but what happened last year? What was stopping our genius football department from offering Menzel a 3 year contract at the end of last year?

Re: Saints target Menzel
He would be free agent I think. And we could get him pretty cheap
I wouldn't mind again assuming it doesn't cost us anything. He's proven very good when on the field and we need guys who can finish

Re: Saints target Menzel
Probably a result of too many half back flankers on the list, not enough choice up forward. Reason why Weller got so many games up forward this year, lack of options.

Maybe it's the player managers feeding the info to everyone. What if the journo's are tapping peoples phones? Have they checked our club for listening devices?

Re: Saints target Menzel
Whatever gets Gresh into the midfield next year i am happy with. Rotting away in the forward pocket. Menzel being dangerous means our other forwards can be more dangerous. He is better than Mav

After 4 knee reconstructions a muti year deal would be incredibly risky.
One year will be our year

Re: Saints target Menzel
Agree Scollop
We have a potential point of difference with McCartin, Bruce, Battle and Membrey all more than capable in the air - noting that Battle and Membrey are mid field size and not key position forwards
Then we have the option of floating Hickey or Marshall to the goal square
Under them we have the likes of Gresham and Long
To maximise the resource we have and should be backing in we need incisive and calculated entry seeking out advantage including one on one contests
Which brings us to the crux of our problems being rebounding defenders and fleet mids
Quite frankly, we have to move past the supports for Carlisle - and I include Webster, Geary and the rest we are currently giving game time to
We trust Roberton returns because he is a requirement
Perhaps Coffield and Clark who were drafted as defenders with the promise of mid field
But whoever they need to have leg speed and the ability to replicate Gram as an example
So the ball is coming into our forward line with depth and accuracy maximising the marking potential we have in our attacking resource - and at least spillage to Gresham and Long
The next area to maximise is support for Steven (and Freeman) where we are also deficient
Currently we have too many “big bodies” - noting Acres is not even being deployed as he should be being deployed - hence the lack of pressure and spread
The 2 Essendon small forwards being the 5 goal performance and Fantasia cut us up last week and that’s symptomatic of the problem we have failed to address both offensively and defensively
They are the template for Gresham and Long
Instead of copying you have other sides needing to put effort into how they counter St Kilda using the resources they have
Interestingly our best performance was when we had McCartin, Battle and Membrey v Melbourne and they were all decisive in the result
The same with the coaching situation
And recruiting - we need support for the now ageing Steven - and we trust Freeman
That should be the focus - exclusively

Re: Saints target Menzel
That is not actually a good thing. So I hope that he is not.
North chase everyone and fail. We seem to have as well.
Dons last year targeted specific players and got them.Devon and Saad made a huge difference this year.
Ditto for the Tigers and Hawks the year prior.
Teams that land players in the main identify them early and get commitment from them.
On Menzel...at least in targets our obvious goal kicking accuracy problem.
(Edit: Realise he is FA -Straight trade for Longer??? will not be required which makes him more attractive as no trade needed...though his age is a factor)

Straight trade for Longer???
My Geelong mates are critical of Menzel for not chasing, or applying pressure to keep the ball in the forward line.
And my St Kilda mates are critical of Longer for being too slow and not contributing with marks and kicks.
Sounds like a fair swap.

Re: Saints target Menzel
Fake news, either to smarten up the forwards or simply blow smoke. When I look at the young talent we have, particularly forwards, I feel so bad we do not have a coach clever enough to utilise and develop it. Richo is more than a poor coach he is a strong negative force, of course unintentional but his thought processes and stubborn adherence to rubbish "principles" are dragging us down. And we need to analyse our injuries, terrible lot of bad luck this year so you can't recruit your way out of that, just make sure the depth is balanced. Pearce is an example of lack of peripheral coaching vision, clearly he should have played earlier and Richo admits he had not seen him live this year. A forward set up with the choice of Bruce, Billings, Gresham, Long, Marshal, Mc Cartin, Paton and Membrey is potent. Our half backs are poor and Menzel can't play there. Webster is an ok player but not close to elite, falls over, gets caught, late with spoils, seems injury prone and his good kicks are so good but there are plenty that are poor. Geary doesn't seem to be able to handle captaincy and his own form. I think McKenzie has gone well past both those guys, at least he can take an intercept mark. Who are the Cats half backs? The idea above of developing Clark and Coffield off halfback sounds good to me. Under Richo it won't happen though because he doesn't really know what to do with his latest top draft picks. If Goddard does well this week that should make Richos departure all the much sooner. If Leth;ean's wish list comes from Richo be quite worried.

**** joke!
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.
