can o ly see that if he was given an iron tight guarantee he'd be taking over, and basically calling most of the shots as an asst.

Good if true but why would he want to leave Hawthorn?

He will take over from Richo. 2019 or year after.

Re: Ratten to the Saints 2019 - assistant
I have a friend who is a good friend of Ratten's and says that he really loves being an assistant coach.
When he was coaching the pressure was relentless and his phone would regularly ring anytime between 6am and midnight with footy questions from media or internal crises.
But when he became an assistant those phone calls stopped, the money was still good, and he was still doing what he loved in the environment he loves.
So I can't see Ratts going back into the pressure cooker again.
But he would be an excellent assistant.

Nah he got cooked at Carlton.
A victim of their shyte management and complete and total overestimation of their list. Mainly by their board.
Quite likely he will coach again. People rate him very highly.

The official line from Hawthorn I heard discussed on AW is he was looking for a senior job or director of coaching role and was exploring his options and was supported by Clarko.Enrico_Misso wrote: ↑Sun 12 Aug 2018 2:25am I have a friend who is a good friend of Ratten's and says that he really loves being an assistant coach.

If nothing came through was welcome to stay at Hawks where he is well respected.
If he was coming to saints, you would think he believes there is a greater opportunity in the wings. Maybe director of coaching?
Who knows?

Isn’t that what the coach is supposed to do?
Sounds like another bulls*t job to me and an unnecessary layer of management.

It's already been stated that he will be leaving Hawthorn at the end of their year (maybe as Joffa Burns stated about getting a more senior role).

Re: Ratten to the Saints 2019 - assistant
I don't understand what the position of director of coaching is.
Doe he have control of head coach or how does it work ?
Beveridge was supposed to do that job for us but was offered top job at Dogs.
Eade did it at Coll. then went to Suns as head coach, like mentioned AR did it at PA.

Re: Ratten to the Saints 2019 - assistant
I'd be very happy if the Saints got someone with senior coaching experience either as a senior assistant or director of coaching. Our coaching box needs all the help it can get at the moment.

Re: Ratten to the Saints 2019 - assistant
Mitchell grew up barracking for the Saints, so although this may not always transfer into people coming to play for us, it does offer intrinsic motivation to coach us, especially as an assistant.
Ratten was an astute coach and didn't like St. Kilda much (over the Aaron Hammil issue), but this can be a positive too - he might bring in some new ideas. The guy has been through a lot of adversity too, and come out the other side. He'd be a good Director of Coaching, I think.
A lot of the problems we face at St. Kilda is due to recruiting, and development of players on the field. Off the field, I believe that the move back to Moorabbin has robbed the club of focus on it's core business which is winning games.
I think AR will have to stay due to the completely irresponsible and short-sighted long-term extension of his contract. We can't do anything about that now, but we must surround him with the best assistants money can buy, or our good players will leave, and our young players will end up dissatisfied and this will parlay into us being non-competitive, which is close to where we are being now.
With better assistant coaches AR will become a better coach, and this needs to take priority because at the moment every match is like groundhog day.

To be honest the whole he doesn’t like Saints or used to barrack for us has no value IMO.samuraisaint wrote: ↑Sun 12 Aug 2018 11:01amMitchell grew up barracking for the Saints, so although this may not always transfer into people coming to play for us, it does offer intrinsic motivation to coach us, especially as an assistant.

Re: Ratten to the Saints 2019 - assistant
Best news of the year, if true.
Ratten had that Carlton team playing a very good gameplan that worked with the personnel at his disposal.
Then they went the Malthouse direction and shafted Ratten, to the chagrin of most Blues supporters I know.
The rest is history....
Great pickup and if we got Mitchell too, it would be awesome

Re: Ratten to the Saints 2019 - assistant
The why no longer really matters as Ratten has already confirmed that he is leaving Hawthorn at the end of this season.
Hawthorn assistant coach and former Carlton coach Brett Ratten has decided to leave the Hawks at the end of the season.
The club announced that after six seasons as a line coach under senior coach Alastair Clarkson, Ratten would explore other opportunities.

Re: Ratten to the Saints 2019 - assistant
I really rate Ratten for his football smarts.
That he has now had a stint at the Hawks will have built this.
Went well at the Blues (with a so so list) as shown by how they went backwards after he left.
