Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Thoroughly unexciting - haven't been that impressed with Phillips, probably could ahve just signed for 1 more. Don't mind keeping Brown as long as we continue to give opportunity to young defenders like Austin and Goddard. Might be bad news for Goddard getting anohter contract though? That'd be a draft pick bust!

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Great news.
Phillips will be a player and looks like he belongs in the AFL already. He will only get better considering his age and number of games.
Brown is a handy player that provides depth and will provide some much needed leadership around the club.
2 good signings.

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Phillips has done more than enough to justify a 2 year extension IMO, he’s basically averaged 20 possessions and 3 tackles a game.Saint wagga wrote: ↑Wed 01 Aug 2018 2:42pm Thoroughly unexciting - haven't been that impressed with Phillips, probably could ahve just signed for 1 more. Better than Lonie, Weller and Dunstan IMO.

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
I dont see the need to grant extensions over multiple years to blokes that havent been showing huge amounts. This is what they did with a few duds a couple years ago and had to pay out contracts or keep them on list (pierce). Oh... and Richardson!!

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Phillips has earned another contract IMO.
I’d be happy with Brown as back up but coach has shown Brown is his first choice defender.

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Yes. Tom Phillips can really play. Taking a good player off the Pies would be good too.
Next Saints flag side. Phillips and Phillips on either wing.

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
I’m happy with both of those.
I have been impressed with Phillips, for a second year player who was drafted in the 4th round, he’s tracking above the curve.
And I remember hearing Brown always had a third year in his original deal if he played enough games, which he did. Good for depth, but I’d really love for Goddard to be pushing him out of the side in 2019.

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
I'm surprised by the view of many on Brown.
He is ahead of all our key defenders (excepting Carlisle) at the moment. The others still have some ground to make before he makes place for them.

Nathan Brown and Ed Phillips both sign on with Saints
Seems pragmatic to keep Nathan Brown for another year to help mentor a young list of defenders. Good to see Ed Phillips has also signed on until the end of 2020, as he has shown some glimpses of promise.

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Agree. He takes the biggest forward and frees up Carlisle. He came cheap and is better than any other kpd we have excluding Carlisle.Linton Lodger wrote: ↑Wed 01 Aug 2018 4:38pm I'm surprised by the view of many on Brown.

Ed Phillips has shown enough for an extension and 2 years is fairly standard nowadays for young guys. Pressure off next year regarding his contract so now it's all about his footy. Don't forget he is a running machine and should only get better

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Sam Fisher started in 2004.
Since then we have had Dempster, Dawson, Delaney, Carlisle and now Brown (and Logan) all from other clubs.
So we have developed just one kpd in 14 years.
f****** disgraceful.
You can't blame the draw or the umpires for that.
Plain f****** disgraceful.

What's wrong with that? Bring them in, no need to develop. Dempster did improve with us, but.Con Gorozidis wrote: ↑Wed 01 Aug 2018 6:11pm Sam Fisher started in 2004.

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Brown is just a BOG average footballer from a bygone era who richo can't help but pick every time he is available…
We desperately need to get games into players like Austin, Goodard & White but instead we will get brown to 200 games because he is a good bloke. Con is right, our development is deplorable and half of it is just refusing to play younger guys until we are forced by injuries.
Collingwood fans giggle when they see Brown still getting around in a saints jumper.

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Jesus effn christ. You cannot be serious. What's the point of getting the number 1 pick or a number 3 pick in the draft if you have crap development coaches?takeaway wrote: ↑Wed 01 Aug 2018 6:46pmWhat's wrong with that? If a club cannot develop players and there's a good example above from Con, then how are you supposed to have any chance of climbing the ladder. Think about it...you get all excited because you're going to get a low draft pick or some multiple low draft picks and they do not come on the way they should...or the way they could...it is a recipe for perpetual underperformance

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
It's not such a bad strategy to recruit defenders from other clubs, St Kilda can focus on drafting and developing young mids and forwards.....Con Gorozidis wrote: ↑Wed 01 Aug 2018 6:11pm Sam Fisher started in 2004.

Re: Phillips and Brown re-sign
Not sure how Brown gets selected every week let alone a contract extension...
Our team is so conservative in every decision it makes. Does it stem from the coach?
