Mitchell set to leave Eagles, return to Victoria.

Post: # 1744559Post L.A. Saint »

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-07-26/m ... o-victoria

SAM MITCHELL will be returning to Victoria to continue his AFL assistant coaching career.

Having spent the past two seasons with West Coast – 2017 as a player in a team which reached a semi-final, and this year as an assistant coach – Mitchell has recently told key Eagles officials he will be leaving.

Mitchell is considered a senior coach in waiting after a glittering 329-game career that included four premierships, five best and fairests and the Brownlow Medal in 2012.

He has been a key off-field part of the Eagles' success to this point of 2018, where they enter round 19 in second position.

There will be fierce brokering by Victorian clubs for his services.

It is believed Mitchell agreed to a four-year deal with the Eagles when he shocked the industry in exiting the Hawks at the end of 2016.

Mitchell & Blake Caracella to Saints next year?
Prime Mitchell to replace Richo at some point in 2019 with Caracella as his right hand man!

Thoughts?

Get him.

Bring him in as assistant and see where it leads down the track a little.

Reckon he'd be a great fit for our club, been there and done it all, super competitive, footy smarts, he's got the package our club desperately needs. Let's see how good Lethleans negotiating skills are.

Before you can negotiate you need to get him to the other side of the table first. Probably headed straight to Hawks.

This would be the best addition to the club we could make.
Lethlean should do everything possible to get Mitchell.

I'm sure any aspiring young coach would love the opportunity to do an apprenticeship under Richo

No we should get Lenny as a coaching assistant, he is more experienced than Mitchell.
But why would he ?
Lenny has a far better chance to become a senior coach by staying at GWS.

Let me make it simple for those who can't understand.
You don't improve your chances of promotion by taking a demotion.
And St Kilda is a demotion.

Seriously Caracella is a good chance at a senior coach's job in the near future.
Why would he damage that by coming to us as an assistant ?
Would he even come to us as a senior coach ?
Unsuccessful coaches don't last.
If you take over a pathetic list devoid of any stars why would you expect to be successful.
Why would you expect to have a long career as a senior coach ?
Dream on dreamers.

Throw the kitchen sink at Mitchell or Cara.

We would need to promise them a senior coach transition and/or pay well overs.

Coming to the Saints as a regular assistant is a career killer.

We need to get real.

Why do you want to hurt them like that ?
Do you hate them that much ?
Did they embarrass you during your playing days ?

Honest but potentially silly question. Can Mitchell coach? Amazing player no doubt, taste success for sure but what has he done as a coach. Eagles are going well but that may have something to with the rest of west coast coaching a nd recruiting staff as well as Mitchell. Not saying don't look at him just saying let's do it rationally and not buy into a fairytale

There's no golden rule as to who is a successful coach. Mitchell may be a good coach or maybe not. Gary Ayres was top premiership player but never got an AFL flag as coach (successful at P Melb though). Clarkson was not a champion player, but now is a champion coach, and as soon as he took over the Hawks you could see he had a certain style he was determined to have them play. How about Voss as coach? champion player, but no good as a coach.. It's pretty hit and miss, but I think strong leadership from the top is a big factor in driving success, and I am not confident that we have that ruthless streak at board level.

What does good succession planning look like for the coaching departments of well run clubs, is it the Sydney, Collingwood and Melbourne models?. Do you have a mix of proven assistants and trainees, where the proven assistants are developed as successors to the head coach and the trainees as successors to senior assistants.

Proven meaning you've got level 4 accreditation and having a list of notable achievements over an extended span of experience.

Is Sam Mitchell proven or a trainee?

Not proven.
More than a trainee.
Somewhere in between.

Does Clarkson have level 4 accreditation? No.
This is a new AFL invention.

We’ll need more than one assistant, so go after Mitchell and Caracella.

We need to build a strong team around Richo, otherwise nothing will change.

Not sure about Mitchell. Wasn't universally loved at the Hawks. Hard task master and didn't always relate well to other people - think Nathan Buckley. Unsure whether he'd make the transition to senior coach. He's also had pretty limited experience.

Certainly he's miles behind someone like Caracella who's had years of coaching experience at a range of different clubs.

My take on the introduction of level 4 certification is it emulates successful recruiting practices outside of the AFL whereby the candidate can upskill to a recognised level that provides both the recruiter and candidate some confidence they might be successful in the sought after position. Isn't the other strategy to find a candidate who has coached a team in thier own right? And being part of a coaching department that has had premiership success is another.

Two potential candidates currently meeting some of these criteria is Michael Voss and Justin Leppitsch, in Justin's case, all three. Caracella? Any others in the system that fit these criteria?

If the aim is to get better support around Richo then doesn't that mean finding replacements who can provide what the current assistants presently don't provide?

What is it they dont support Richo with?

https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/ ... d2e601WILL SAINTS LAND OFF-FIELD RECRUITS

- Jay Clark

ST KILDA should target West Coast assistant coach Sam Mitchell and GWS Giants’ Lenny Hayes to beef up its coaching panel for next season.

The Saints are planning to overhaul their coaching staff for 2019 on the back of a disappointing season.

In particular, midfield coach Simon McPhee, who came to the club in 2011 from WAFL club Claremont, could be replaced.

The Saints are ranked equal-last (alongside premier Richmond) for clearances in 2018 with an average 33.5 per game and fifth-last for centre clearances (11.9).

The Footy Show’s Damian Barrett last night reported Mitchell, 35, was looking to join a Melbourne club for next season to help develop his coaching skill set.

Melbourne clubs were aware of his plans and were jockeying for his services, Barrett said.

Mitchell is highly regarded for his football intelligence after a sparkling playing career at Hawthorn, winning four premierships and the 2012 Brownlow Medal.

The onball champion is widely considered a senior coach in the making and should appeal to the Saints as they look to bounce back from a difficult year next season.

St Kilda icon Hayes, who has been lauded for his work with the GWS Giants since he retired, would also be a perfect fit.

Similar to Mitchell, Hayes was also considered one of the best midfielders of his era, playing 297 matches between 1999 and 2014.

New St Kilda footy boss Simon Lethlean said the Saints' coaching structure needed a revamp.

“There will be some changes in our coaching side of the program,” Lethlean said on a club podcast.

“How many and who any of the appointees may be is unknown at the moment, it’s July so we have to test the market and see who is available and see who is interested and also understand what structure is best for us.

“I have a view on how our coaching structure should be and it’s a bit different to now, so that will mean change.”

A good assistant worth his salt should surely see that we need better coaching as we have a team which has shown it has the talent to perform well on occasions. If they believe they have ability then coming to us gives them the chance to prove themselves and raise their value.
