B.J. 'Pretzel' Goddard crossed my mind as an Ass Coach or spare parts man but I don't think he'll wanna be training his guts out to be playing at Sandy like Shane Wakelin did fro Williamstown until fianlly recalled. too. I wonder if young players would respond to him? At first I thought he might be on the nose, but then I thought, we are already on the nose, so BJ might bring us some cred. Finally, though, I thought, should we be picking coaches to attract players?
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

So - the club half-went down this path in late 2016. I think I posted about it at the time.
Out of contract, BJ was pretty keen to explore the possibility come back. Asked his management to check it out. He missed the club; still loves the place and wanted to finish his career alongside his mates, especially Roo. He was also exhausted from the Essendon trauma. So they reached out.
The club looked into it and had some conversations but it was a pretty quick rejection. In the end, they felt we were tracking strongly (...no comment) and didn't want to disrupt the list management plan with players over 30. A thanks but no thanks; about a week or two later, Goddard re-signed.
In hindsight, we should have grabbed him then, on a free, when he still had three good years of footy left.
Could he play a Hodge-like role next year? Worth considering.

I don't miss his finger-pointing and potting his team-mates...he would have freakin' exploded during some of our performances this year. I get the feeling he's home at Essendon these days, I reckon they'll re-sign him anyway.parkeysainter wrote: ↑Thu 19 Jul 2018 10:50pm Hmmm...tempting, but he sooks alot. FWIW, I wouldn't have minded offering NDS a 2 year contract post North, would have been handy with his delivery out of defense this year.

Yeah

If it's leadership we are in need of then wouldn't that be the big question mark for most clubs looking to recruit him as a player and/or assistant coach?evertonfc wrote: ↑Thu 19 Jul 2018 10:33pm So - the club half-went down this path in late 2016. I think I posted about it at the time.

I think there's a perception around him that he is going to struggle with. Buckley had to deal with it during his transition from player to coach so it's possible to transition but he probably needs to find a club and culture that can assist with the transition. Don't think our club is it just at the moment.

Are we not lamenting the need for a strong passionate leader? Isn't St Kilda perceived in AFL circles as being to "Vanilla"? He'll become a great coach, in the mould of Barassi, Sheedy and Clarkson!

Re: BJ ...if we offered him one year just for leadership ..would if hurt us long term ?
It can't be 'just' for leadership. The problem is that he takes the spot of a player and I think we have experienced guys already in our backline. We should be at a stage we're we are looking for a settled six. Coffield, McKenzie and White preferred

Re: BJ ...if we offered him one year just for leadership ..would if hurt us long term ?
Taking the 'Games-are-not-for-training-always-choose-Best 22 ' perspective, right now, this week, against Richmond tonight, what would BJ bring to our team, forward, back, midfield etc.,? that our current lot are in need of? Are any of the current players similar to him in terms of what they offer, and do regularly offer if given the chance?
I am just curious, because I've seen BJ from way back but I'm just learning about the new guys.
(I still can't imagine him slogging it out at the Beach Oval anyway, but maybe if a AC promise was waiting?.)
