According to Richo we may look for an Experience leader

Post: # 1742597Post mohannair »

Listened to Richo on Crunch Time on SEN and he admitted that he under estimated the vacuum crated by the lack of Leadership due to the departure of Roey, Joey and Dempster.
He went on to add the effect of Hodgey on the Lions and mentioned that we may look for an Experienced leader to be added to our list for 2019.

Jarred McVeigh comes to my mind who will be a great pick if we can land him.

Any other thoughts?

I think he is trying to recast history and play the how could I have possibly known there was a leadership void card. What did he expect would happen to the group dynamics when a colossus like Nick left. Pity he couldn't develop leadership in house after 5 years and has to shop around. Hodge's don't come easily off gumtree; Luke has a strong connection to Fagan and is on a promise. Nevertheless if a second hand leader came on board with the promise of coaching in 2020, that would be worth looking at. Dale Morris?

Oh s***. This is really bad.

Apart from deflecting responsibility, how is this going to make Jarryn and the leadership group feel?

Dale Morris?

Sure.

What about Lou Richards or Jack Dyer?

Maybe in the back of the box to help the coaches? An experienced coach who has had success either as a player or coach, doesn't want to head coach anymore( ato avoid a Rodney Eade situation). Who could fit that role. Surely more beneficial than Lethlean or Finnis sitting in the box observing - what would they know about coaching ?

we do miss an experienced leader, however i think this season was the season we needed one. lads should have adjusted by next year. missed the boat did the coach, completely misread it and being typically slowly reactive - good coaches are proactive and understand the playing group.

Then Roo and or Joey should have been kept on for another year.

This is a massive cop out by Richo.

Give Richo the arse, now.

Exactly. Leadership starts with him. The buck stops at his desk. We have a leadership void that’s for sure....
He can’t see the woods for the trees. His lack of leadership is the elephant in the room.

Disagree.

It stems back to a lack of kids being introduced in 2009/2010.

As a result, our senior group now is Jack, Armo and Gilbo. We obviously added Brown to that.

That's just not good enough to bring young guys through. Teams that have good senior groups, develop their young guys better. Fact.

Teams that don't - don't. Fact.

Totally agree. We need to add good 25+ players to our list plus a vet.

This is the very situation that creates leaders. Sit back and watch it unfold.
IMO Steele showed a bit. Rice showed a bit. Who else?

It also relates to recruiting in the period 2007-10. We have only one surviving from that time - Steven. (Gilbo & Armo were earlier) Other clubs with similar draft picks during that time, for instance Geelong, have at least 5 still playing, and the Hawks have 8, and just lost Rioli. Not exactly under Richo's control.

Exactly.

It's poor list management really. Not in terms of pure recruitment - but in terms of allowing the list to become as unbalanced as it is.

Well nature abhors a vacuum, so to take Sachmo's point some leaders will emerge and we hope its long term quality stuff. I think at least one Forumite suggested that the recent winning phenomenon was player driven in that they were giving their playing style opinions and following that on field whatever Coach Alan said. A few of the younger players seem self confident and assertive from this side of the screen but hard to know the real influencers. My guess using the fools guide to body language is Gresham, Steele (Satchmo's work), even young Clark, and of course Armo is a natural. Long possibly when he comes back and gets a few more games into him as he doesn't take a backward step. Need a real hard nut enforcer/persuader though. Where are our Sudanese, Kenyan, Fijian and Polynesian scouters, i.e. Majak and Alliir both look quite handy skill and mentally strong wise. Diversity! like this forum.

Richo is always late for the party and misses out on the girl.....no idea ...he is not cut out to be a senior coach. Listening to Richo man talking to him during the game on the bench was f**cking embarrassing. Cringeworthy , whoever came up with that idea needs a good flogging.

Reckon we had a bit of a leadership issue in the early 2000's under Grant Thomas. So he decided to anoint 3 young blokes with potential leadership skills; Nick Riewoldt, Luke Ball & Lenny Hayes. That worked.

Quite frankly, we don't need another Nathan Brown in the team.
