When playing against St Kilda, who do you tag?

Post: # 1741304Post To the top »

So, there is the question.

Put yourself on the other side of the table, playing against St Kilda and who do you identify as those players requiring negating including by putting a "tag" on them?

And why?

What's a strength of our game plan, is it creating scoring options from defence and transitioning quickly into F50?

I'd have a look at the outlet and running players out of defence and the overlap players through the middle. Shut that down and our forward line isn't capable of creating opportunities if it comes in high or slow.

For the players that are likely to be selected this week, I'd put some work into these

Webster, Savage.

Gresh, Steven.

Stop Steven and stop St Kilda.

It’s that simple.

Seems that way. Melbourne's mistake was to tag Seb and let Jack run free.

Quite stupid of them really.

Yeah tag Jack Steven but what if Gresh gets off the chain. Gresh is going to have a good run home I'm predicting.

Without wishing to give any oxygen to one responder, there is the problem

Does our Captain attract a defensive forward flanker because of his impact on the game?

Apart from Steven, we do not have a mid at that level and worse, our mids are rated on stopping games

Then we get to the cavalry being Newnes and others who are our experienced players

So instead of our experienced players apart from Steven being respected by our opposition there is no regard paid to them

Instead focus is on the Billings, Acres, Gresham et al

The summary is give these kids a break - they are doing it tough in a side where the age and skill demographic is non existent

Our skill demographic is kids recently drafted

Then Carlisle who is at another level

And given the predicable response of a certain polluter of this Forum - then we get to Longer who would not get a SANFL Seconds game

Symptomatic of why 3 wins on the season including the ineptitude of the Coaching and selection panel - and the Administration over a period of years and which has overseen the lack of balance in our List and no transition considerations

I’d target Billings, Sinclair and Gresham, they’re the only ones who can hurt you by foot.
Steven and Ross don’t hurt opposition teams as they tend to give it straight back.

I will give you a little oxygen, but not much ( as you may report me, again)!!!!!

Why would our captain attract a defensive forward to put some work into him?????

Geary is and has been one of the best defensive tagging small back man in the game in modern times, just ask the likes of Betts, Rioli, etc, they have all openly admitted Geary as their toughest opponents!!!!!

That explains your love for the old Hickledik, whom does not defend!!!!!

Games of Football, Wars, Boxing's Matches, Street Fights etc etc are won on the back of a mixture of defence and attack!!!!!

Even the soft sport of soccer relies on a combination of both!!!!!

Surely even you understand this, surely?????

PS, you still didn't answer why you selected a team with 4 tall forwards, 4 tall backs and 2 ruckmen, however, if your not concerned about defending, that explains your logic, I suppose!!!!!

Anyway, enough oxygen for you, don't want to give you too much, you may report me again?????

No. Melbourne's stupidity was to have Jack Viney tag Steven in the first half and allow Seb Ross to play as the outlet player / sweeper off half back in the 2nd half. That robbed them of Viney's clearance work and meant that Seb Ross had time and space to hit targets (normally he misses targets when he is under the heat). They also never put on blocks for Oliver when Steele was wearing him like a glove. That was the stupid part.

That said - as per the above - tag Steven; stop St Kilda. North does it regularly with Jacobs.

Hopefully, with the emergence of Gresham as a mid (he offers something different - i.e. speed - that Dunstan, Ross and Armitage don't have) - we'll be harder to stop in the middle. Until then - we have one player only requiring attention.

For the record, I would not know what the Complaint procedure is - and, recognizing what this Forum is why would you even bother?

Perhaps the Mods could confirm?

I reckon it was Carlton's plan to work Gresh over and it arguably worked.

He’s going to get a lot of that during his career, so now’s a good time to start learning how to deal with it.

The great thing is, it means another player - such as Steven or Billings - is getting less respect than he warrants.

So true, although when it is clear an oppo team has identified a player to work over like say what happened with Gresh on Friday night, the rest of the team need to come together to counter that. The young fella dishing out the eye gouge and knees to Gresh should have become an immediate target by the rest of the team, maybe it did and I didn't see it.

Well he’s got his comeuppance, though I thought a week was lenient for that type of dog act. I’m sure our guys will file it away for future reference.
