While you appear to be somewhat in the know SC, it doesn’t mean that the selections made by the club are ‘right’, they are a decision made by the coaching staff for reasons that only they and possibly you know.

I personally don’t agree with them on Longer.

While I’m not in the inner sanctum I do my best to piece all the media and insider info together to try and understand the decisions made my the club.

From what I understand Longer is largely playing as a ruckman tagger. His main purpose is to nullify the opposition ruckman and impose himsef physically as much as possible, which he does. With barely any offensive contribution.

Long term I can’t see Longer being any better than he is atm, which isn’t very good. He’d be in the bottom 4 of AFL 1st rucks.

With Hickey I see far more up side. He’s shown that he can influence a game both ways. Has one bad game and is dropped. Play well from an outsider pov and doesn’t get a recall despite Longer stinking it up from an outsider pov.

I’d love to know the kpi’s that our selection panel are working off.

I would love to see Freezer debut, but suspect he may be next cab off the rank. Newnes survives because again we need someone who can kick goals.

The other 3 you nominate I think are spot on. Of course Longer will play against Carlton - he matched Ryder and managed to stay with Gawn the week before, plus held his own against Witts the week before the bye.

But Marshall will come in for McCartin at FF, and you'd think Hickey will probably have to come in for Gilbo. At least Longer won't have to ruck the entire game without a chop out again. He'll have his hands full with Kreuzer. Hickey is mobile and can take a mark and kick a goal, or drop back in defense if we're under the pump, especially early, plus take some of the boundary ruck contests. I'd rather not see Gresham in the ruck this week thanks.

There should be a lot of changes this week - can't play another small backline - Goddard and White in to cover Brown and Carlisle at FB and CHB. I hope Carlisle comes back this week but his body language showed he is still injured at training, so can't see it.

I don't want to scapegoat players but there are a few players needing a spell in the magoos who could justifiably be dropped in the midfield for Freezer and Acres.
I think you could make an argument for 6 changes this week, even though we competed well against Port.

If past selections are any guide, Lonie might come back in too, at the expense of a mid.

Carlton will be desperate Friday night, they're copping a hammering in the media, and you can bet internally they're copping it too. But that's nothing compared to the sh*tstorm which will hit Moorabbin Friday night if we don't win. You could see the relief on the coaches' dials when Gresham kicked that goal against the Suns, we won't be that lucky again if we let Carlton get 7 goals ahead of us.
