I honestly do see your point re paying $1m to anyone but those 3 you mention are now worth $1.2-$1.5m with the increased salary cap in the open market. Gaff will get $750k from West Coast. To move he will demand more. And with competition for his services even more.

He is an All-Australian, A B&F winner at WCE. Score an average 108 fantasy points - not that this means much but is known for his skillful delivery as a link player. He is 26 this year and would have 5 seasons left in him. He is a restricted free agent so will not cost us any draft picks or player swaps. he literally goes to the highest bidder. And remember we have more than $2 million in our cap.

If $2 million is accurate then I think 2 or 3 players in the $600k to $700k range is a better fit for our club and where the list development is at. It will be better for depth, versatility and team harmony and culture.

Do poor clubs like ours have to invest in low to meduim risk portfolios with longer term ROI? I don't think we can afford the risk of selling the farm for one marquee player that might not be the answer to sustained success as your goal.

Jordan De Goey knocks back $1 million offers, tells Collingwood he’s staying


EXCLUSIVE: JORDAN De Goey has told Collingwood he will stay at the club.

The hard-nut midfielder is expected to sign a two-year extension, turning down huge million dollar offers from St Kilda and North Melbourne.

His manager Ben Niall will now thrash out the final terms as the Pies attempt to bridge the gap between those offers and what they can afford.

Niall told the Herald Sun that there was still a gap, adamant there is no deal in place but working in good faith to broker a deal.


Importantly, De Goey has made the big call to remain at the club despite leaving hundreds of thousands of dollars per year on the table.

The Herald Sun understands his salary could be around $700,000 a year, but not the $1 million a year he could get over five seasons at North Melbourne.

It is a major coup for the Pies, who have this week lost Adam Treloar but are expected to inject De Goey into the midfield.

They are finally pushing strongly for finals and seem to have an established core of young stars.

Niall made clear no official agreement had been brokered.

“We haven’t done a deal yet. Jordy would like to do a deal, but there is a gap.

“We are being transparent with Collingwood and he is keen to stay.”

Collingwood chiefs are extremely confident they will lock him away until 2020, having recently re-signed Jaidyn Stephenson and Matthew Scharenberg.

The club has put enormous work into his personal development after a drink-drive charge and his deception over breaking his hand in a pub fight."
