It will massively help us. Paddy one on one could be a monster. And our midfield lack of class won't hurt us so much. We have some great bookends, we'll be way better. Footy had become unwatchable, the first quarter of the power and dees had me contemplating switching over to the rugby league. But the storm weren't playing 🙄

In the quest for 24/7 publicity 12 months of the year to attract self serving media interest and sponsor monies too many changes from the origin of the game have already been made and the code is suffering accordingly

Other codes are copied - as in the Draft and Free Agency

These are pandering to out of season publicity - let alone the encroachments already on the cricket season

The Code needs to go back to its core - starting by reverting to Clubs representing the geographic names the Clubs carry

So back to each Club fielding development sides at Under 16 and Under 18 level therefore connecting with their geographic region because that is where their youth come from - and they can then scout Regional and Rural areas for talent introducing them to the Club at Under Age levels

Then do away with all the remainder nonsense changes to the Rules of the game - Rules foisted
on supporters by the Cartel that controls the game for self interest

Take footy back to where and what it was before the Corporate Cartel took over and supporters were shafted - including by the scheduling of games

That's correct, but VFL was opened up at that time with the introduction of the centre square, initially as a diamond for the first season, then rotated to become the square. The VFA took the 16 a side route to open up the game.

Less players needed = smaller playing list = less player payments = better financial situation for the club!!!!
This cannot happen!!!!!!!!!

The AFL charter stipulates 18 players per team!!!

DJ Higgins wrote: Thu 21 Jun 2018 12:42pm I think zoning has its merits but has flaws as well. Say 3 players from each team must stay in the 50 m arc at all timesand aball is kicked forward and stops 51 meters from goal
No one can leave the 50 due to the new rules or give away a free so they stand on the edge of the fifty waiting for a mid to get the ball rather than taking a step forward and picking up the ball?
The zone only applies at the start of a play like a ball up, so the players can roam free - but if they do not get back to their 'zone' before the ball up then a free is paid - exactly the same way that we have a 'zone' in the centre square currently. You can have 15 players in the centre square except for at ball ups.

Of course it can, the AFL wrote the Charter, they can change it if they want.

They should just call play on when a team kicks backwards outside their forward 50. They are trialling it in the SANFL I think.

It will force teams to go forward more and thus will become more direct.

bassoon wrote: Sat 23 Jun 2018 6:29pm It's the Interchange that is killing the game. You either cut the interchange rotations, or you move to 18 players with two on the bench.

The modern game calls for intensity from all players that can be only sustained under the current rules.
Exactly this. I favour two on the bench because 1) it can be implemented at every level of football and 2) we already know what happens when you do it.

The game opens up as teams cannot sustain a flooding effort for the full four quarters.

However, I’ve complete confidence in the AFL to balls it up completely and bring in zones or some other complicated nonsense.

Gilligan needs to put the coaches and the players back in their box and tell them the game doesn’t belong to them. I’ll believe that when I see it.

I’m assuming people want higher scoring contests and less congestion. So here are my suggestions.

Interchange are restricted to 2 per team per goal.

Players must return to traditional starting positions after each goal.

Pockets start in the pocket, behind the 10 yard square line. FF and FB in the 10 yard square. Flankers and HF and HB start anywhere on the line of the square. Wingers start on the wing.

4 on the bench. If you go off outside an after goal interchange you cannot return to the field until the first goal of the following quarter.

So you want the current plan for zoning with the addition of a more stringent interchange???

You can go wherever you want after the ball is bounced, and interchange will only be restricted if its a low scoring game.

If both teams kick around 100 points there’ll be around 70 interchange.

The lower the score the less changes.

The returning to positions is about creating more 1 on 1 contests. And hopefully having more centre clearances like Harvey to Lockett in the old days.

Saintmatt wrote: Wed 20 Jun 2018 3:01pm This absolutely helps us and in particular - a certain No 1 draft pick. According to the reports - due to the 6 at each end rule - Brisbane's forwards (in particular - Hipwood) ran riot as there was no congestion to stuff their leads / 3rd man up to spoil.

Now all we need to do is get the ball into the hands of the few players in our team that can kick to the advantage of our forwards.
Interestingly, this exact topic was discussed last night on Footy Classified. They also spoke about it on SEN this morning.

Seems the 'experts' think the traditional Full Forward will make a big time comeback. Luke Hodge also said it.

Interesting....

If you could go back in time and somehow mandate that the rules will never change from this point forward when would it be?
