Re: Tom Hickey
Good post teflon.
At least Hickey gives 110%.
Longer got towelled up by Leuenberger today, and the bomber is pretty average at best.

Tom's direct opponents have been in the oppositions best 3 players the last 3 games, so that counts for nothing does it?????
Just for interest sake, can you name the last time St.Kilda won a game Tom was playing in?????

Joffa Burns wrote:Must have been watching a different match than most of you.
I thought Hickey got slaughtered by Sandilands.
He was ok around the ground but smashed in the center bounces and ball ups.
He fared better at the boundary throw ins.
I disagree with Stoney on defense, I think Hickey defends his man far better when the opposition ruck runs forward than Longer ever has.
Correct Joffa, except the last sentence, however, two out of three is good for you!!!!!

Yes indeed, good knowledge on Ruckwork Stephen!!!!!Stephen Theodore wrote:Have to agree with stoneCold here, I thought Sandilands gave his midfielders an arm chair ride. Hickey is good aerobicall, ran and picked up possessions, but for pure ruck work he got flogged.

We may have snuck by brisbane in round one, but it had nothing to do with Longer who was abysmal.

Re: Tom Hickey
As I stated weeks ago, Tom has been OK, nothing more, however he is very weak at Centre Bounce work and allows the opposition mids first use most of the time through being basically a non identity at the centre bounce, yes, does same nice things around the ground (mainly pushing forward), provides very little down back (in the last two weeks, has allowed smaller opponents to mark uncontested on the goal line)!!!!!
If you think Tom is the answer, your incorrect!!!!!
We don't have the perfect ruckman, stated this long ago, Hickey good around the ground, useless in the ruck contests, Longer good in the ruck contests, useless around the ground ( although does defend, which Hickey does not)!!!!!
So, as stated many times before, play the one in the best form (or match up), Hickey is also injured again and no certainty for this week!!!!!

Re: Tom Hickey
Much of what you say is true but to suggest that Longer defends and Hickey does not is ridiculous. On the odd occasion that Longer gets to contests in defence, he has no impact. Maybe have a look at what happened when Hickey and Sandilands were one on one about 15m out from the Freo goal and compare that to what happened when Hickey was off and Gilbert had to compete.stonecold wrote:As I stated weeks ago, Tom has been OK, nothing more, however he is very weak at Centre Bounce work and allows the opposition mids first use most of the time through being basically a non identity at the centre bounce, yes, does same nice things around the ground (mainly pushing forward), provides very little down back (in the last two weeks, has allowed smaller opponents to mark uncontested on the goal line)!!!!!

Re: Tom Hickey
For me, the problem is that Hickey is not a "ruckman", much the same as blake Acres is not a ruckman. He offers a contest, but usually gets well beaten at stoppages giving the opposition first use. He is however a mobile tall which means he has to play forward and be the back up ruckman, pretty much in the Marshall role. Trouble is, he is only a serviceable forward albeit one that can kick straight! Seems like a bit of a hybrid in that he can do dual roles ok but neither well. So playing Hickey as predominantly a forward impacts on the development of say a Marshall and Battle.
All that said, he has been having a crack and by no means our worst and does just enough to hold his spot week to week.
Longer is by far the better "ruckman" and gives our mids more at stoppages, but at the moment, he is not knocking down the door at Sandy and i think he must do so before coming back in. I think it is more likely Longer can develop his around the ground game than Tom can develop his rucking.

Fact. Hickey gives his all, so does Longer but both were beaten on the weekend.
I have never dissed Longer.

Re: Tom Hickey
Agreed. Longer was well-beaten in the centre in both senior games he's played this year so far. If Longer is getting beat in the centre, then we really are playing a man down.dragit wrote:Now you are really clutching at straws mate.stonecold wrote:Just for interest sake, can you name the last time St.Kilda won a game Tom was playing in?????

Longer was good last season at the stoppages, but has hit a form slump and isn't banging down the door at Sandy, much like Hickey's plight last year.

Re: Tom Hickey
Rubbish, you need hit-outs to advantage, Sandilands had 40+ hitouts to advantage on Saturday night!!!!!saintsRrising wrote:If Hickey had Fyffe as his No1 mid then watch out....
Fyfe is Fyfe and would rove to Hickey's opponent!!!!!
At the end of the day, you cannot go 3 games in a row with your direct opponent in the opposition's best players!!!!!
That is what Tom has bought to the table, so, if that's a job well done, then no wonder we are s***!!!!!
Freo just walzed out of the middle, mostly due to easy Sandilands hit outs to advantage, if you think otherwise, you have no clue!!!!!
Tom needs to compete, not physical enough, too easily beaten and pushed aside, (acceptable for a kid, but not the oldest, most mature ruck on our list)!!!!!
Same old problems!!!!!
For all you knockers: ask yourself this
If it was a Brown, Weller or Geary etc and was allowing their direct opponent to be in the opposition best 3 players 3 games in a row, blood would be called for!!!!!
I'll ask again, when was the last time we won with Tom as #1 Ruck?????
Also, Sandilands will receive coaches votes, 3rd week in a row for Tom's direct opponent!!!!!

Re: Tom Hickey
Impressed with Tom's comeback...I wanted his papers stamped after the Essendon game last year, as I couldn't see how anyone could serve up a game like that (and back it up!) with his experience and improve dramatically. But he's done very well...taking onboard Stonie's comments re: his defensive work (although he usually lays a couple tackles per game), lets hope the improvement continues as I now can't see much future in Five Possies Longer. Hope I'm wrong twice!

Didn't say Longer needs to comeback, just pointing out that Tom's opponents have been in the BEST three players on the ground the last three games, not sure how many times I have to point that out for the dumb posters to get it!!!!!
Obviously many times for some!!!!!
Anyway Hickledik is carrying a knee and may be in doubt, so we may have no choice but to play Billy!!!!!

Billy is 2 for 2 on that measure. Stefan Martin was in the top 3 in a losing team.
