Tom Hickey
Among all the schitt on display last night, one bit of positive news ( for me at least) was the performance of Tom Hickey. The much maligned former no 1 ruckman gave Sandilands a darn good contest.

Agreed. Making opposition rucks at least earn their possessions. Worth persevering with!

Re: Tom Hickey
Longer is more physical and can play enforcer more, I guess, but as a pure footballer I’ve always rated Hickey higher

Re: Tom Hickey
I agree they should both be playing, let's face it Mason Cox gives Coll something and both these blokes are better
than him.Our current set-up needs something, anything.

Re: Tom Hickey
Good to see big Chewie Hickey find some form lately.
Not sure if playing Longer is in our interests, unless Hickey gets injured. After this year, Longer's career in AFL will be done and dusted.

We need to keep going with Marshall as the back-up.

Where’s Stonecold’s input? How’d Longer go in the 2s today?

Re: Tom Hickey
Based on the above post, can we delist or trade Longer at seasons end, we have more "spuds" on our list than any other club, we'll never get anywhere untillrealdeal wrote:Longer played crap in the Seniors, he's now playing crap for Sandy.thejiggingsaint wrote:Why not be bold..... play’em BOTH!bigcarl wrote:Longer is more physical and can okay enforcer more, I guess, but as a pure footballer I’ve always rated Hickey higher

we have a cull and draft or trade in talented players.
I'm over the shite St Kilda and Sandy dish up. Surely the club isn't going to run with same coaches players and staff in 2019.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: Tom Hickey
Three games in a row Tom's direct opponent in top 3 best players for their respective club's, (including last two opponents in Coaches votes and Sandilands will make it 3, in 3 games)!!!!!
You are getting carried away by some cheap around the ground possies!!!!!
Have a look at Sandilands toy and dominate centre bounces last night, resulted in many Freo goals!!!!!
Tom continues to refuse to defend and let's he's direct opponent have a massive influence!!!!!
He has lots of work to do!!!!!
Many of you are undereducated at the true art of ruck work!!!!!
All the best to you though, you opinions are welcome and valued, somewhere!!!!!

Re: Tom Hickey
Have to agree with stoneCold here, I thought Sandilands gave his midfielders an arm chair ride. Hickey is good aerobically, ran and picked up possessions, but for pure ruck work he got flogged.

Re: Tom Hickey
We don’t have a complete ruckman.
Tom gets beaten at the bounces and gives away stupid frees at the worst possible time (viz. against North last year) but is quite useful around the ground.
Longer is more competitive at the bounces but completely and utterly useless around the ground
We don’t have Michael Gardiner. Wish to hell we did.
Oh, and I’ll never forget the day Jason Blake beat Sandilands in Tassie.

Re: Tom Hickey
I know that Longer’s strengths are supposed to be his big frame and contest in the hitout, but when he’s beaten in that department, we really are playing a man down, as per round 1 and 2.bigcarl wrote:Longer is more physical and can play enforcer more, I guess, but as a pure footballer I’ve always rated Hickey higher

Re: Tom Hickey
If you combined them you’d have a complete ruckman. I can see Hickey developing in the ruck duels. Not so sure about Billy being able to develop ability around the ground.SydneySainter wrote:I know that Longer’s strengths are supposed to be his big frame and contest in the hitout, but when he’s beaten in that department, we really are playing a man down, as per round 1 and 2.bigcarl wrote:Longer is more physical and can play enforcer more, I guess, but as a pure footballer I’ve always rated Hickey higher

Re: Tom Hickey
Must have been watching a different match than most of you.
I thought Hickey got slaughtered by Sandilands.
He was ok around the ground but smashed in the center bounces and ball ups.
He fared better at the boundary throw ins.
I disagree with Stoney on defense, I think Hickey defends his man far better when the opposition ruck runs forward than Longer ever has.

At least Hickey goes forward and can jag a goal and has a second effort at ground level longer has none of that
I'm not even that convinced the hit outs always culminate in clear mid advantage often times (some yes but they're not as prevalent as you'd think for mine as sides know how to pick these off)
I certainly didn't think Hickey was our worst that's for sure
