Recruitment of Long and Phillips
Without going into the recruiting the last few years in detail, looking specifically at just Long and Phillips, they were very good selections outside the top 20 (especially Phillips at 56 I believe). Plus we have obviously developed those two since being at the club and both have played well at senior level already showing very strong potential. Maybe we aren't as bad in this area as some Saints fans think.
I think we will be saying the same of Battle and Marshall in regards to the above at some stage too. One was a mid 30's pick and one a rookie pick.

Re: Recruitment of Long and Phillips
No one pick is suitable for judgement or even one draft period.
It is the balance of picks over several draft period that matters.
The recent ones look ok, but shudder when you take a look over many periods.
Going in to this draft period with so few reasonable picks to work with is a worry.
I do not know how good how list is, but it is not as bad as it is playing at present.

Yep, but I guess they will trade away our 1st round 2019 pick for two third or fourth rounders this year.saintsRrising wrote:

Don't laugh, they have done sillier things in the past.

I hope you are right - Long started looking very good before getting injured - Phillips has played 1 very good half of football ( he didn't do much in the second half)

Re: Recruitment of Long and Phillips
Brilliant debut by Phillips
Smart, composed and went 80% with zero clangers - also had 5 tackles which is 1 less than Newnes has had for the entire season.
Give the lad a cookie and keep him in the side

Re: Recruitment of Long and Phillips
They got Phillips in the 50's! He's got a fair bit of silk about him.
Regardless of the hysteria on here, not entirely misplaced but also alarmist, Billings is going to be a gun, Gresham is showing he will go nicely through the midfield, add Clark, Coffield and Phillips and there's the nucleus of a good deep midfield. Just need to add a little cream (this List needs its Lenny Hayes) and we'll be quite right.
Third quarter, Phillips under pressure, shirks his opponent with a nice little side step and effortlessly hits Billings lace up, Billings turns on his left and fires a laser precision 40 metre pass to Membrey, don't know if Membrey saw it coming until it hit him between the nipples. Pure unadulterated cream, with a sublimely perfect cherry on top. Thanks for missing the shot Members!

I doubt Marshall will be on the List when Richo's contract is up for renewal in 2020.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: Recruitment of Long and Phillips
Billings goal kicking should easily be fixed...in theory. That kick was not a fluke was it?
JB needs to visualise that he is hitting up a team mate. When he passes in general play he does it instinctively. Most times he's also doing it under pressure and he knows that there could be someone on his hammer.
That shot he had in the last quarter was putrid. The guy standing the mark won't come at you Jack? He just needs to convince himself that he is 'not' under pressure. He has earnt the right to take his kick and he will not be tackled or bumped. How hard can it be kicking a footy with no-one coming at you?

Long and Phillips havent had enough time to be destroyed as players by this coaching regime.
Luckily Phillips has his older brother to learn from because he there are no role models at the Saints.

Re: Recruitment of Long and Phillips
I like your optimism parkey, but don't you think you are suffering from premature evaluation?
Phillips had a favorable debut, Battle is not commanding a spot in a bottom team with its two key forwards injured, Marshall is showing something but still a fair way off while Long looked the goods in 4 or 5 matches this season. How these guys develop will be the key.
Three years back Lonie, Billings & Sinclair were looking like players of the future but all have stagnated.

Not really. Lonie is probably not up to it, but Billings and Sinclair will get better. Pretty confident in that.Joffa Burns wrote:I like your optimism parkey, but don't you think you are suffering from premature evaluation?

Yes its early on the players I mentioned, but I'm just highlghting that our recruitment and development is obviously not as bad as some think. Perfect example: We recruited well and have developed Acres and Dunstan well to where they are right now. Both have become good players and regular selections. We did that! The damn Saints believe it or not over a 5 year period!

Re: Recruitment of Long and Phillips
I'm not agreeing with Con but if you look at our picks and how they played in the first season and then after being "coached" turn to ruin...
D. McKenzie....was elite in speed and agility, tested very highly at combine, regarded as a leader, we get him and he fades....
Jack Lonie....was the co-captain of Dandenong Stingrays, touted as a future AFL team captain that's how much influence he had with the lads... He won Vic Country’s best player at the Under 18 championships...where did his speed and silky skills go?
Brandon White...great closing speed, highly accurate with foot and hand ball, great decision maker, what happened?
Eli Templeton...this guy came out smashing the ball...first 6 games amazing, breaks his arm, flush him...he cant play after breaking his arm.
Jack Sinclair...struggling, Jack Billings...struggling, as a matter of fact show me a player who has consistently improved every season after we have drafted them in the Richardson ERA?
This guy (AR) was touted as a developer of youth. What has happened? Is he too busy as the senior coach to be involved?
Why are our young guns fading?
Certainly players get hurt and never come back, or they falter in their second season after people figure them out and they get tagged etc.
But we seem to struggle greatly in this area would you agree?
If not show me the stats for the players improving every season.

Re: Recruitment of Long and Phillips
Fantastic post. The other mystery which is costing us dearly atm is Billings and Membrey. Their kicking is woeful and it used to be elite. Same with Paddy McCartin's kicking for goal. He had the first shot for goal against Melbourne and it should have been a soda. Gresh missed a set shot straight after Paddy. It seems like the confidence and form of too many players is down at the same time. It can't be a coincidence. It is definitely a coaching and development issue.David-Lee wrote:I'm not agreeing with Con but if you look at our picks and how they played in the first season and then after being "coached" turn to ruin...

Re: Recruitment of Long and Phillips
marshall is very young and very tall. He projects very well in a number of areas, so well in fact that his nick name at the club is 'the prospect'. He'll be a better player than Stanley ever was, and he netted us a pick 20. Marshall aint going anywhere unless it's in a trade where we come out on topbobmurray wrote:I doubt Marshall will be on the List when Richo's contract is up for renewal in 2020.
