Bump.

Says it all really. Not that we don't play like crap mind you.

Ah, no.
Ok. I'll have a crack at it then. It's a stat trotted out by those with a chip on their shoulder and who are completely paranoid that believe that the big bad AFL are out to get us. Makes us feel slightly better about our hopelessness than having to admit that our patheticness is completely our doing? Close?

Haven’t read the entire thread but a lot of incompetent free kicks given by players.

Acres - one free in the ruck when he didn’t nominate to be the ruck.
Billings - gets tackled in the hip/legs and drops the ball rather than handball. Then gets tackled and just drops the ball rather than attempt anything. Just crazy how many free kicks he gave away.

That whole ruck nomination crap is absurd. Just a totally pointless show of authority by the AFL and the umpires.

As long as there is no 3rd person involved in the contest, play on. No need for unnecessary chit chat. Players have enough to worry about.

What's next... Defenders having to call out before they stick a fist in??

You haven't really thought this through - or have forgotten the very reason why the rule was brought in
In your world all you have to do is "look" like you are going to compete against the oppo ruck - stand there (effectively blocking) while your team mate takes the ruck. You can always claim you were never going to take the ruck

Lol, the conspiracy now has the AFL altering the stats.

I'm sure the AFL has again cheated as it is not possible that a fan website got the numbers wrong

So you always thought the numbers were wrong, but posted them anyway

Probably the literacy issue raising its head again, I'm sure there would be adult classes you could attend saynta.

If the team had actually busted a gut to win each week, maybe I'd actually give a damn about free kick stats. Until then, it's the least of our problems.

Haters??? A little over the top don't you think? Just think it's a completely meaningless statistic and not sure why you think it's so important that you need to post it every week. Next thing you will be telling us that we just need to kick the bloody thing down the guts and stop mucking around with it. My parents (God bless them) love their footy and spend their analysis after games complaining about umpires and how they're getting worse. I have heard the same conversation from them for the last 35 years.

As Sainternist has said, the umpires aren the least of our problems and I'd be horrified if the club was wasting precious energy on them. Ever sat and watched a game with an opposition supporter? Even just on TV at home? It's only then you realise how biased every supporter is. Every 50/50 call should be the team you're supporting without even realising it.

Unfortunately, unlike yourself, I don’t watch the game specifically to complain about and document 50/50 calls that don’t go our way. But off the top of my head, Long got the ball in the back pocket, turned into traffic and ducked his head and got a free for high contact, which he shouldn’t have, very lucky it wasn’t called holding the ball. Also there were a few marking contests where our players pushed the opposition out which could have easily been called as free kicks but weren’t. I remember in the first half we had multiple shots at goal resulting from decisions going our way.

Your inability to recognise your obvious bias towards the Saints when watching the game is baffling. You expect every 50/50 call to go our way, so naturally half the time when it doesn’t you’re going to be outraged and whinge about it on here. Try watching a game as a neutral supporter and actually documenting all the ‘wrong’ decisions, and I think at the end of the game you will see it goes both ways and is pretty even.

A comment in the age.

"Anon
Only watched the last quarter - with no volume!!!

Thought a couple of charity free kicks drained the life and endeavor from St Kilda early in the last giving Hawthorn easy entry and goals to kill the contest.

The standard of the game, the scheduling of games and the standard of umpiring are draining public interest in the code as confirmed by crowd sizes today

A couple of sides, when going well, might draw crowds but the remainder games draw paltry attendances

Too many teams?"

Too comfortable with media revenue?

s*** and we haven had our perennial Pert game against the Eagles yet where we have somewhere between 7 and 11 to Eagles 21 - 29 frees. We obviously don't tackle right as we give up so many frees OR WE HAVENT BEEN TAUGHT HOW TO DUCK WELL.

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency

Sam Gilbert went right off at the umpire for calling play on when it was clearly dropping the ball by a Dees player in the goal square or just on front of their goals. Sam laid a good tackle after the Melbourne player hesitated and second guessed whether to handball, kick, or try and baulk.

That is clearly an instance where a player had prior opportunity. The ball was not handballed or kicked. It is incorrect disposal and Sam should have won the free. The umpy called it play on and another Dees player came running in and kicked the goal. Absolutely obvious decision, but for some strange reason they call it play on.

When the game was up for grabs we got reamed again. Webster gets arms chopped and his head nearly taken off in a marking dual and it's called play on. When it goes up the other end and our forwards try a spoil with some fairly soft body contact or head high contact on their defender, the ump immediately blows the whistle and gives them the kick.

There were times in that first half when the closest ump missed an obvious free and the crowd noise convinced him to make late calls . We actually got some dubious frees in the second half and I reckon thaey definitely try and square up the ledger. The ump closest to the action was also overruled from the ump further away a couple of times which is a good thing, but I can't for the life of me work out why they don't just adjudicate the rules and pay the damn frees if they are there.

While I don't think the umps have anything to do with how badly we're going / playing, I do think Leigh Fisher should never officiate one of our games again.

Agree, I don't think they are responsible for the yips in our scoring, but I'm not so sure that they don't influence trends in games. Take this weeks game, the Melbourne ruck takes a mark over the line, passes forward and they score. Ok, that's fine but even the commentators were wondering why it was a mark??? and what? you tell me there wasn't any direct behind the goal line vision of it? only crap from a 45 degree angle??? Pfft.

Sorry folks, it would be great to see what our for and against stats show from the three quarter time perspective over the last 10 years, you know, that time in a game before they start evening things up but the game's GONE! ffs.

I would bet it would show me were even more royally screwed by the maggots.

Not saying anything just telling a story but I have a good friend who has a son who is an AFL umpire.

His son has a bad gambling habit. Reckons his son and his mates would bet on anything including two flies crawling uo a wall.

They are doing everything they can to break his habit.

That is unfortunate, and just one more thing you wouldn't want to wish upon anyone.

Can you please let him know how much he could make on a Saints win this week?

Maybe he has been betting for them to lose.

Or maybe he and his mates are waiting for our odds to blow out into double figures before making a real killing.

Absolutely obvious decision, but for some strange reason they call it play on
+1

Unbelievable non-decision, and at a crucial stage of the game.
