That was pretty much my thoughts too on the most positive aspects of the game tonight, though I will add one more.

The other real positive I thought was Savage's strong form where he continued on from his very good form of late last year where he was one of our best players in that period. Who knows, "Steak Knives" may well turn out to the best part of the Big M trade.

He was great. Followed on from his form in that crappy x game.

2. Paddy kicked goals and got his hand on the ball - needs it for confidence
3. Steven fit
4. Armo got through a game albeit rusty
5. Gresch will be very good this year, will accumulate a bit more and take next step to genuine B grader

Some negatives too:

1. Weller is gone
2. Long has a fair way to go, mign't make the grade.
3. Wright is a poor AFL player
4. Lonie is far too small for AFL
5. Longer is not a first class ruck.
6. Gilbert's best days are behind him.
7. Geary is a poor choice for captain
8. Brown is just a battler. The filth don't delist good players.

Agree with Saynta, think Marshall competed better than Longer. Not sure the amount of exclamation marks are necessary...

Great observations, Saynta. Years of observation and seeing the same thing over and again have sharpened your judgement. All the things you mentioned in the negatives were apparent last year. Some people just want to be Pollyannas. That usually ends in disappointment.

I agree on all these points.
The club has trained professionals who should know their jobs,
however being human, they are NOT infallible.
I think the staff at the club are just too invested in the emotional side of things,
or they believe blindly in their own judgement.
But they are wrong and flawed.
None of those guys would get a gig at another club, unless that club had 34 guys suspended.
The club has a history of poor decisions- Scott Watters was sacked and still got paid for 12 months of NO work,
showing that the club admitted their error of judgement; so folks "trusting the club's judgement"
scares me and makes me despair that we will ever drag ourselves up the ladder.
Bluescum beating us in"just the JLT" reveals how bad we might be this year.

I agree with almost everyting except the Lonie comment, I'm not a big fan of his, but he was close to our best player in the first half when we were quite poor. His stats for a permanent forward were pretty good and he provided plenty of great defensive efforts. far from our worst

I admit that Lonie has footy smarts but he is too small and easily brushed aside. Another 6 to 8 cm and 15k's maybe he would be a star. Cripps, the scummers forward/onballer, is a foot taller than him ffs.

It’s interesting with Lonie...

An average season has caused many to write him off but he’s actually looked half decent in the off-season so far. He was alright vs Carlton and decent in the AFLX vs Hawthorn too but many here just don’t want to hear.

As far as the small forward role goes, he’s certainly ahead of Weller and Wright in my book... not that that’s saying much.

I managed to see nada of the 1st. prac game but am glad Armo got through ok & just might be a regular contender once again in the middle. Paddy clocking up more game-time is just great to hear. I'm still feeling positive regarding the likes of Gresh, Sinclair, Steele & Billings growing further into their potential.
Excited by Clarke & Coffield but it's very early to be stoking expectations although I can understand the urge.

Other positives:
- our only elite from last year was ordinary (Sinclair);
Billings wasn't playing;
Wright was playing and he won't make the 22 in the real season

Weller needs to get his game working again. With Lonie and Wright, who has kicked the most goals in the last two seasons- I haven't checked? I think Lonie has good defensive skills, and Wright stronger in the bodywork, but we do really need a small forward to be kicking goals consistently.

There is no good in bleating about playing at someone else's home ground. If you want to be any good at any level of footy you need to win on other teams home ground.
It's going to be a long season if we whinge everytime we have to play a side on their home ground.
We will whinge against GWS. Whinge against Geelong. Whinge against the Suns.
That is three home grounds we need to play at this season.
