So? What is your Saints Team of the Half Century
We have discussed position by position but now is the time to build your team.
I am still troubled with a few positions
- Full Back
- Half Back Flank - I really want to find room for Cat Colling!
And picking my bench will be impossible!
As a result I am suggesting we allow ourselves
4 interchange
3 emergencies
And don't forget to name
Captain
Vice Captain
Deputy Vice Captain (like the good old days)
Plus Coach and Assistant Coach!
Good luck!

PS I had to draw the line somewhere, but if I could add another emergency it would be the late Verdun Howell. Like the Doc, his last season was 68 so he just qualifies, but he was a wonderful and versatile player.George27 wrote:B. Burke Murray Neale

Re: So? What is your Saints Team of the Half Century
If we are looking at the team of the last half a century then we are talking about the years 1968 to 2017 inclusive.
On that basis it can be argued that both Baldock & Howell should not be included as they both finished up in 1968, and thus only played one season in that 50 year period. In fact Howell only played 3 games in 1968.
Maybe there should be a qualifying period of say playing a minimum of 50 games over the last 50 years.
If 50 games is used then Ian Stewart would also not qualify as he finished up in 1970 before going to Richmond.

50 games seems a good starting point.

Your approach makes sense, but that would mean it is a team of the best-performing players over the last 50 years.
I took the view that it is a team of the best players who happen to have played in the last 50 years, and that is where Baldock etc get a gig
Both approaches valid.
As BFUSA has been good enough to start all these interesting topics, I would be happy for BFUSA to set some rules and we can select within those rules.

Re: So? What is your Saints Team of the Half Century
I think making the qualification is that they played at any time in the past 50 years but they should be judged on their output from 1968 onwards.
You could select Baldock who played 21 games IF people assess his 1968 season as up to his standard.
But you may view other players more worthy.
would be hard to select Howell who played just 3 games.

I corrected it Lori's. A mere oversight. Please forgive me. Gershwin already pointed out my folly.

Re: So? What is your Saints Team of the Half Century
For me the team of the half century has to be the 1966 Premiership team. They achieved what no other team has been able to do.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Re: So? What is your Saints Team of the Half Century
Sincere apologies for the premature and inaccurate announcement of the death of Verdun Howell - a senior moment by me.! I had recalled we had eulogised about Verdun on this forum some months ago. In recalling that is week, I equated that to his death , when in fact it was his elevation to the AFL Hall of Fame. Sorry about that, folks.
Given BFUSA's ruling that we should assess the team based only on performances from 1968 onward,I will rethink my team .

Re: So? What is your Saints Team of the Half Century
I simply do not get the Aussie Jones love.
Yes, very talented. But picked and chose when to put in. And lazy-as!
After that great running goal in the 1997 GF, he did nothing in the years our team sunk to the bottom. When we started to rise up again in the early to mid 2000's... suddenly, there Aussie again.
Where the hell were you in the dark years when we really need you mate???? I didn't notice the likes of Harve's, Buckets, Burkey, Thommo putting things in the 'it's all too hard basket'!
