If my memory serves me correctly John Macintosh could also stab pass on either foot, which I don't think anyone else could do.
Tragic his career was caught short by that knee injury, he was a ripper.

The thing about the tall back pocket was that sometimes they played full back depending on the match up.Kevin Neale was a good example of this.

Hudgton was good but compares almost identical to Dempster at 191cm just heavier. He was good at coming in late and fisting the ball but his stats on most things are below Dempster. So basically I like Dempster for best small and tall pocket player

I agree he was a great tall player, freakish kick on both sides, beautiful torpedos, drop punts and drop kicks; incredibly mobile.

However, I can't remember him playing well in any final.
Further, Peter Knights' absence in 71 was probably as important a loss for the Hawks as JM was for us.

In 1972 we were as good as any team on our day (eg beat Richmond by 89 points at Moorabbin). In my view however both Carlton and Richmond were slightly better than us in terms of talent overall, and JM's presence may not have made a huge difference. Ditto 1973...

Who will ever know however?

What was annoying however, was watching his son Ashley playing for the WCE. He could have been a great FB or possibly HB for us, and who knows, we could have pinched a flag in 91 or 92 with him in the side. ???

No definitely played in the back pocket most of the time.

Brian Sierakowski: He fortunately lived in the time when you could kick the ball straight out of bounds and not be penalised.

Stephen Roberts: He went from a complete dud to a very good player. Like Siera, his time at the Saints was short.

John McIntosh never really played in the back pocket. He was at CHB or on the ball.

Barry Lawrence: He won interstate selection in the position. Which reminds me of a funny story that Allan Jeans related. He was coaching the interstate side and Barry Lawrence was in it. The rest of the officials were drawn from other clubs as well, including the runner. At once stage, Jeans said to the runner, "Tell Tubby to stay on his man!". The runner set off, got half way and ran back. He exclaimed to a bewildered Allan Jeans, " Who the hell's Tubby?" Those who saw Barry Lawrence play his first game will realise why he got his nickname.

Absolutely correct. The day Allan Davis kicked 10 against Pies in early 70s at Moorabbin, McIntosh was hitting him lace out off either side with bullet stab passes.

For me he was a genuine ruckrover. As to the tall back pocket, I have Cowboy in that spot. In those days I recall Big Carl and McIntosh would be on the ball, Neale in BP, Bob Murray at fullback and Barry Lawrence CHB (though Barry could play just about anywhere )

For mine McIntosh was a utility and wouldn't be classified a back pocket.
