Re: Jaxons views on draft
Hunter Clarke is not for us. He is a half back flanker first and foremost. Yes he did play some tim ein the mid field but as an inside mid which we don't need, we have enough of those.
Coffield is also a back who can develop into a midfielder. I.e. he is a back who can venture into the midfield not a midfielder. I hope we get others but whoever we get I will get behind them

Having just listened to Dr peter Larkin on 3aw re the heart condition on Stephenson i think we should pass on him. The fact his heart could stop at any time and risk is increased due to heat etc to me in a team game is too great . I feel really sorry for the kid but it is too big an issue and heaven forbid it did happen it would devastate a club for a long time.

I have no idea but like the look of Cerra and Fogarty but understand they may not be available so if not Coffield and one of Bonar or Stephenson

It's time for draft facts, not speculation, another 24 hours we'll know how it all panned out.skeptic wrote:I tell you this much, am ready for this to be over. Am tired of speculating.
Then we can speculate on the Rookies.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Sounds like some arrhythmic condition he may have.skeptic wrote:older saint wrote:Having just listened to Dr peter Larkin on 3aw re the heart condition on Stephenson i think we should pass on him. IF it is , the condition can be well controlled by medication. Or, fixed if person has a successful electrophysiologic study & catheter ablation. This procedure discovers where the electrical imbalance is happening in a heart. An electrical current is delivered at the end of the catheter and heating the tissue destroys the electrical pathway responsible for the abnormal heart rhythm. That, bye-the-way is a very simplistic lay person’s version of the procedure.
Sometimes it is common in endurance athletes. Can’t recall her name, but an Australian triathlete who came 3rd in the last Olympics suffered with the condition, she had an catheter ablation and no further probs. One of the ‘Oarsome Foursome’ also suffered with tachycardia fibrillation and controlled it with medication throughout his rowing career. These are just a couple of well known endurance athletes who had the issue and still competed at the highest level. More common than people realise.
A not so lucky young footballer who has the condition, is a lad who Freo recruited last year - may have been in the rookie draft that Freo picked him up. His condition only surfaced during pre-season training. He went in for a catheter ablation, it wasn’t successful. Seems medication wasn’t successful in controllling his heart rhythm disturbances, and excessive training, frequently got his heart rate up to dangerous levels. So the poor lad had to retire this year, not even getting past the pre-season training.
So IF that is the condition Stephenson has, it’s not unusual ,in young fit people. It’s only usually picked up by medicos when the person is putting their body under physical stress (ie training, competition etc).
Quite often the problem is picked up in medicals during army and police training, when the physical training gets ramped up.
If that is his problem. It sounds like it might be from Dr Peter Larkin’s description, ( ofcourse I’m only guessing here ) Stephenson could be one who has no problem, either has the condition fixed, or controlled by medication. Or he could be unlucky, like the Freo recruit from last years draft.

Re: Jaxons views on draft
I have also just listened to Dr Peter Larkins regarding Stephenson. He is a definite cardiac arrest risk. Although the actual type of arrhythmia was not revealed, it is one that has been associated with sudden death in many cases in basketball and junior football. Seems like a high risk to me. AFL is just about the most demanding sport when is comes to the heart. Although an outstanding talent, I can see most clubs shying away from the risk.

Agreed.CQ SAINT wrote:Great post.vacuous space wrote:Clark isn't any more a HBF than Stephenson is a HFF. Both were used on the outside at the carnival and both played more midfield for their TAC clubs. Clark was the better of the two. 26.7 disposals; 13.5 contested; 6.2 clearances and 6.6 tackes per game for Clark versus 23.2 disposals; 10.5 contested; 3.2 clearances and 5.5 tackles per game for Stephenson. Clark kicked 11 goals in 13 games and Stephenson kicked 14 goals in 15 games. At the very least, Clark over Stephenson is defensible on form.
Coffield spent more time outside, but that's in part because he's the best kick in the draft. Dismissing him as a flanker is incredibly reductive. Coffield had 30 contested possessions for the carnival. LDU had 31. Cerra had 34. Clark had 22. Stephenson had 17. Coffield looked composed under pressure. He moves well in traffic and makes good decisions. I don't see any reason why he couldn't play more midfield at the next level, except Richo might prefer him on the outside too. I don't believe there's any suggestion that his tank is deficient. His yo-yo test was 21.2. Stephenson's was 21.8.
I don't think passing on Stephenson is a big deal. He's around about the mark if we think he's healthy. His best was pretty good. His worst was pretty bad. 14 touches against WA; 10 touches against VC; 12 against the Allies. Not exactly awe inspiring. I think it's incredibly optimistic to assume the 28 touch, 5 goal Stephenson is the one that's going to show up in the AFL. He didn't show up at any other point this year. I'll take consistent performers and elite kicks over X-factor any day.
Rory Sloane was drafted as a HBF. Not sure how many games he played there once he got to Yadelaide, but I don't recall many.

Re: Jaxons views on draft
So we going to get the seventh best midfielder in the draft but who is he ?
He is clearly going to drive us to a premiership unlike the six better midfield prospects ahead of him.

Pun unintended.
If Barnes is successful in taking the AFL to the cleaners over player safety then the AFL will act.
They will off load any future issues regarding player safety onto the individual clubs.
Clubs would then need to insure themselves and report any potential issues like heart conditions to their insurers.
We all know that insurance companies that exist to cover risks actually never take a risk.
They will simply say we won't insure Stephenson or Paddy McCartin.

Re: Jaxons views on draft
To succeed at the pointy end of the season, you need blokes who are both physically and mentally strong.
It's very hard to beat a team that not only can play, but can't be intimidated either physically nor mentally.
(Which is why I've continually been 'amazed' by some of the players that it's been suggested we look at recruiting - think the likes of Watts, Hartung, Gaff, Vickery. )
So with this in mind, from tonight's draft I'd love us to get...
7. Bonar!!!
I'll be really really pissed-off if we pass on an opportunity to nab this bloke!!!
Will probably end up the best player in the draft. (Yep, I'd take him with a No 1 draft pick!)
Check out the vision and accurate disposal under pressure.
This bloke is not a down-hill skiing fair weather type. He is the type of player who will perform for you in a super high pressure GF.
I don't get the concerns over his knee(?) He blitzed at the draft trials, so no on-going physical loss there. Besides, anyone can do a knee. Harves', Lenny (twice). Roo played his whole career with a dodgy knee...

8. Don't know, but definitely not...
Hunter - too small, too uninspiring, and yet another half back flanker.
Coffield - talk about an underwhelming highlights reel.
Stephenson - not worried about his heart - the bloke is very very very unlikely to make it as he's just too way lightly framed to successfully play against AFL-sized men. (And note who is run down by Bonar early in Bonar's highlights vid'. )
And probably not...
Higgins - very very tough on the bloke I know, but he's just too small. Would end up another Lonie. (And yep, I know he's actually bigger than Lonie.) The trend is towards bigger, stronger mids, and that makes sense to me.
34. Noah Balta.
Please, please, please, please let him still be there!!! (I'd even be happy to take him at 8.)
Beautiful kick, and kicks it a mile too.

45. Don't know, but would be happy with Paddy's little bro'.
And I'd be very happy for us to rookie Lambikins too.
