How is this going to stop the concussions? They are the only real issue that is going to stop him becoming a good player. Was he wearing a helmet?

Helmets - even the best ones - don't prevent concussions. Helmets don't magically negate the G-forces/the head-jerking that lead to concussions.
Also, how do helmets help if you get hit across the jaw/cheek (other than protect the facial bones)? - you can get concussed this way, too.

There are people that are prone to concussions, that have "glass jaws" - perhaps, players need their wits about them (be spacially aware/not have tunnel vision) and/or learn how to "roll with the punches"/take evasive actions.

This is an interesting concept being trialled in the US. It is basically a collar that tries to replicate the conditions inside the head of a woodpecker. I know of one high profile player in the NFL trialling it by the name of Luke Kuechly. He has sustained about 4 concussions in the past few years and is trialling this for the first time this season.

"Invented by David Smith and Greg Myer of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital, the "Q Collar" creates a kind of bubble wrap around the brain. It was the subject of two new studies published last week in Frontiers in Neurology and the British Journal of Sports Medicine, demonstrating significant decreases in signs of brain trauma in high school football and hockey players."

Geelong's Harry Taylor Paddy-whacked him on the NOSE in a silly spoiling attempt.
Off for rest of game.

I read somewhere (I'm not sure how true it is) that having strong neck muscles can help. Strong neck muscles can hold the head somewhat in place, and prevent it from being rocked about as violently cf. having weak neck muscles - like the head-bobbing toys that you see in cars (imagine the same toy with stronger springs).

.... or having no neck like Gladstone Small, where your head is part of your body - with no intervening (and bothersome) neck in between - genetics might help?

Something that you can wear around your neck that would act as a "shock absorber" (in the form of a specially designed neck-collar, say) would in all likelihood work much better than a helmet to prevent concussions.
Helmets actually increase the inertia - it's not only your head that's being knocked around - the helmet means you have extra mass (and angular momentum?) that probably makes the concussion more severe. Your head (and brain - the organ that's being concussed) gets rocked about more violently with a helmet. It's all physics.

You want something that would prevent the head from loosely flailing around and jerking about, that would hold the head somewhat while absorbing a fair bit of the shock of the impact, by spreading some of the energy of the impact down to your shoulders - where the base of the collar would sit - i.e., with this special collar you're allowing the head to move around, but not as violently - by lending support to the neck muscles.

I formally claim the idea for it (the saintsational shock-absorbing neck collar) and the international patent, of course. Any investors? .. Why not the St Kilda football club? -
we'll start work on the prototype, forthwith, and I think I know a perfect candidate to test it out on.

Edit: I just saw st cave's post above re: a collar that's being developed - but interestingly the cited article was talking about extra volume of blood being squeezed to the brain, thereby acting to reduce the amount of space that the brain has to move about inside the skull - I was thinking of a more substantial collar that would lend support to the neck muscles (to hold the head and spread the impact of the shock). I was looking at it from another angle. I didn't realise that the extra volume of blood could also help here - maybe combining the two concepts, with a larger collar, as I've suggested, might do the trick?

St Kilda high performance manager Matt Hornsby said Freeman was among several young players at the club to impress during the time trial.

“It’s good to see that while ‘Gears’ still holds the title, he is being challenged by a couple of the younger boys as well,” Hornsby told the club’s website.

Hornsby said a large portion of the playing group set personal best times during the time trial.

“For all our draftees it was their first time trial and we were really impressed with how they performed as a group. But taking them out of the equation, we had 13 players perform PB’s so that’s a real positive for the group straight away,” he said.

No mentions of times though. Had the same thought last year. Don’t think they want to reveal the times. It’s not like it’s the combine.

I will not get excited until Paddy plays more than 5 games without concussion AND if he can string a season of games together with even average play he could be our guy for the future...so I dont think he will make it but I am 100% cheering him on to succeed!

St Kilda's key forward Paddy McCartin wants to repay the faith the club has shown in him – since picking him at No.1 in the 2014 national draft – and extend his contract beyond 2018.

Having set a personal best in the time trial on the opening day of pre-season on Wednesday, he travelled to a training camp in Yea with the Saints full of hope his career will gather some momentum in 2018.

Wow that is very positive if not slightly over optimistic. You have raised some good points but realistically
Goddard is slow and hasn't shown a lot before getting injured, needs to find another gear this year
Long was cooked before the season started so this year he has a clean slate. Lets see what he can do
Freeman has to play this year or we drop him. 4 years and no games wont cut it. But he's vfl form has been great so looking forward to seeing him in the r,b&w
Logan cost us nothing so I am expecting very little which mean i can only be surprised
Weller if you are injured then don't play. Rest and get better. You become a weak link and take experience away from another player which is pretty much what happened this year

as for the draft picks I have to disagree with you, Stephenson is a terrible field kick so I think there are better and Bonar is an inside mid which we have plenty of. Need an outside mid who has great disposal skills and either a small forward or another outside mid
