Paddy smashes his PB in 3km time trial
The old 3km ball buster. It really sorts out the boys from the men in the fitness stakes.
Great to see Paddy smash his personal PB in pre-season training. Very positive news and he is looking fit from all reports.

Apparantly all that time he took off playing and just training at the end of this season just gone has done wonders for his fitness base and body.howlinwolf wrote:Great news !

Re: Paddy smashes his PB in 3km time trial
I don't reckon his previous PB's were all that outstanding to be fair.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

His fitness is legit.
"Now the ball is loose, it gives St. Kilda a rough chance. Black. Good handpass. Voss. Schwarze now, the defender, can run and from a long way".....

I can't wait for paddy to knock 'em dead on the field! Enjoyed the glimpses we've seen, hope he can become a real force as soon as possible....
Second PS - hope that time at the end of season has helped give him a solid foundation to launch at 2018
Despite having the paddy blinkers on, I'm always a little skeptical of people "smashing" their PB without the club providing any numbers - wonder how much came off the time?
It's like all the stories over pre season, where every single club has been "training the house down".

Re: Paddy smashes his PB in 3km time trial
Kind of thought he had previously struggled in November, lacking endurance... it is clearly a positive if he smashed his PB.No other way to look at it..Con Gorozidis wrote:Paddy is the best player in the AFL in November. Does not mean he will star in 2018 and no one said it meant that.
It just means he is improving his endurance, which hopefully means he can present himself at more contests, and can improve his second efforts and his defensive work. Hopfully these improvements will make him an AFL standard forward as he enters 2018 as a 21/22 year old.

Re: Paddy smashes his PB in 3km time trial
What was his time? 2 days, 7 hours and 23 minutes? Only kidding. Would someone be kind enough to post? No disrespect, but I could've smashed Paddy's previous best 3 km time trial. I remain hopeful.

Lost weight.
Got leaner.
In tip-top condition.
He is fit enough to play a 5-setter against Rafael Nadal
in a NON-CONTACT sport.
Fitness is not enough.
He had NO contact at all during training since about July.
He's not gonna make it. Sadly

Re: Paddy smashes his PB in 3km time trial
I think we're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole by making McCartin a lean, fit runner. He's a big boy. He could have used his natural size advantage in marking contests. If we try to make him another Josh Bruce he won't have a size/power advantage any longer and he won't ever be able to run opponents into the ground.
Also, 3km time trial is pretty invalid. It does show general fitness but it's not very AFL specific at all, especially not for a big man. How fast Paddy can run repeat sprints of 20m and 40m, with jumping and tackling at the end of each would be his measure...not a steady state 3km run.
There is really very little correlation between how he goes over 3kms and his chances to play senior footy consistently and well in 2018.
But anything that gives him general confidence is required, so that's a positive.

Re: Paddy smashes his PB in 3km time trial
It means he built up a better tank.....
That will help him be able to do repeat sprints with more confidence but again he has to train for match like conditions as well..

Re: Paddy smashes his PB in 3km time trial
We are about to get our number 1 pick
It may not be this year but 2019 with paddy, logan, goddard, long, battle, freeman and progression of the other youngsters we wont know ourselves. 50-100 games in all these young guns and they are guns. Much maligned and I dont know why?? Ffs people riding off goddard WTF kid has not had one chance to do anything yet. 2020+ is when we need him.
Long - he played VFL then NT league before pre season what did we expect a 19yo to do?? Hes one to watch
Freeman - 37 possies in VFL why wont he be ready in 2018?
Paddy - fit and firing
Goddard - back from injury
Logan - broken leg before that had elite numbers in a few areas
Weller - injured all 2017 still played tagging role. Is fit and ready
Perfect strom is brewing. 2020s will see MULTIPLE flags for us back at moorabbin. 60k membership after 2020 flag as we roll on
The chemistry synergy this team will have and very early is beyond what afl has ever seen. Not one player has left in the last 2 years or is it 3 years??
Add xfactor in this years draft with stephenson/bonar and sloane/gaff as FAs we seriously got something amazing unstoppable

To other posters doubting the 3km run. I'm pretty sure the very expierenced and well qualified fitness staff know what they're doing.

Re: Paddy smashes his PB in 3km time trial
One of the major issues that Paddy has had (aside from the concussions) is his inability to chase hard and create second efforts. Improving his fitness is a huge step forward for him in this regard. If you can't see that this kid has talent then you're not looking hard enough.

Re: Paddy smashes his PB in 3km time trial
In all seriousness though. I think the best thing for Paddy is to get fit and play a fwd flank for a while.
It is crazy to chuck a young kid at full fwd to get pummelled and bashed. Just crazy.
Go deeper when Ur older and more mature. U can't start there.
