Re: Get Hartung
I'd get him for the right pick / price.
I have no idea why the Hawks de-listed him but keep O'Rouke.
Doesn't make sense.

Re: Get Hartung
Was probably 23rd or 24th player in their premierships years and probably would have netted a 2nd rounder as a trade in 2015, now delisted.
Is and has always been very quick with good endurance, question marks on foot skills and hardness and winning own ball.
22 YO and 63 games under his belt.
Could do worse than give him a couple of seasons at budget price, but who gets the chop to fit him on the list?
I would have him above Meatball & Lonie for starters.
Has outside speed and run, but if Clarko can't get him to play how he wants him to, how will any other coach?

Re: Get Hartung
Would like to know the full story first. Something doesn't sound right.
Would be be very close to our best 22. He had 26, 32 and 23 touches in his last three games this year.
That's so far ahead of Nathan Wright, Daniel McKenzie and Darren Minchington.

Re: Get Hartung
It's pretty well documented we need outside run, so from that perspective he's exactly what we need. Bit crap that he's renowned for being a bit soft, but initially, we don't need him to be the next Armo.magnifisaint wrote:f*** the freebies. Let's get someone we need. He's Hawks starting 22 though, so agree, something smells fishy here.

You could be right.
Looked to finish the season ok.
Would be worth a pick 40 you would think.
So maybe there is something fishy.

Re: Get Hartung
Something isn't right with this one.
I struggle to see how Hawthorn could not have facilitated a trade and got something in return rather than just de-listing.
SO what is the problem?
Work ethic?
No Dick Heads policy?
Attitude?
What..?

Your comments immediately reminded me of another player that we got from BabyPoo, who was an emergency in one of their flag teams.
He was 'fringe' but has since become quite a decent guy, although was dropped a few times- importantly didn't drop his head but bit the bullet and worked his starfish off; a sure sign of maturity.

Re: Get Hartung
Really not sure if we need a Hartung. He is a B grader for sure and has ability but probably wouldn't complement us very much. I don't think we should write him off though. To be honest, he is better than a couple of players on our list that immediately spring to mind.

Re: Get Hartung
This will probably be an unpopular post/opinion, but part of the reason players are desisted isn't just playing ability/performance (which I fully recognise is the primary output/measure of an AFL players, that is their purpose of employment).
I was at an AFL seminar in September where Hawthorn high performance manager Andrew Russell (who Sean Dempster just joined) talked about the process at Hawthorn that they've traded/delisted players at their club not primarily due to a lack of performance, but the club acknowledging that the player likely won't reach their full potential at Hawthorn, and they need to make a hard call in delisting them even if there is the risk of them flourishing elsewhere.
I'm not saying Hartung is this diamond in the rough, but think we need to be open minded about young delisted players who maybe haven't had great opportunity, or haven't been used in the best roles given their strengths.
Like or hate him Dawson played a key role for us for a few years, I think our list is at a point with young developing talent and some serious quality about to come in via the draft that if we can't secure proven players via trade/free agency (which we can't), it's worth looking in the VFL and delisted players i.e. Hartung/Talia.
I look at players like Joey/Seb who were honestly quite average in their first few years, I personally though Seb was going to be super average, and this year was a significant improvement.
We've had a fair share of misses as highlighted, Polo, McGough, Gamble, etc.... but what's the risk of taking 1 of these guys on our list versus the 70th+ pick on a guy who may never make it anyways.

Re: Get Hartung
Yep agree with that based on comments by Saints and Hawthorn supporters on Facebook some time ago.CQ SAINT wrote:Cant defend and his best stat is clangers. He cant even ski downhill. Would rather move Savage to the wing instead.
I watched him after and when under minor pressure he butchers the ball but his speed does him well. When carrying the ball he has a tendency to run wide and drop the ball badly often with some pretty bad results. I must say those comments are based on 2 games only.
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

I think it depends on what we’re willing to spend...
The reality is he’s a step above a handful of contracted players on the list. One may consider biting the bullet n cutting someone lose to get him

Re: Get Hartung
I'm not sure Hartung is what we should be looking for. He's got some pace, which we need, but that's about it. Given where we are at we still need to be adding as much quality as we can, not just getting more average players for the sake of it.
My feeling, given we just cut O'Kearney, is that we'll be focusing on mids in the draft, especially with picks 7 & 8. I'd like to think that those two (plus Freeman) would get games ahead of Hartung. If that's the case we'd be better off with an 18 yo with potential upside, than someone who's been in the system 5 years and won't get any better.

Re: Get Hartung
Absolutely no to Hartung. He's a receiver and he can't get his own ball. Not strong enough. We need a couple of bulls in the middle because the game is becoming more contested.

Re: Get Hartung
He's obviously nowhere near as good as Seb Ross - but worth comparing stat-wise (seeing they are both midfielders).
Hartung vs Seb Ross -- this year's averages - effective disposals - (I'm not looking at total disposals).
midfielder vs midfielder
Hartung vs Ross
16.8 Effective Disposals Per Game 21.7
76% Disposal Efficiency % Per Game 72.6%
2.0 Clangers Per Game 2.7
Ross tackles more and definitely works harder.
Worth picking up, I reckon - might develop further (he's only 22)?
At the same age - Hartung is probably ahead? - his outside game, anyway.
