Trading Our Top 10 Picks For A Higher Pick

Post: # 1703180Post damienc »

Never claimed to be in the know and not about to.

But heard from a source other than the whisperer guy on twitter that we were in talks with Carlton today to swap their pick 3 for our picks 7 and 8.

While I trust my source, I am only reporting what I was told and putting it out there.

So let's just follow this through for the sake of interest.

Clearly we have someone specific in mind in terms of recruting however, we don't think that player will be there at pick 7 or 8.

We are not talking to the Lions or the Gold Coast so clearly we don't think they are going to select our man. Otherwise we would be trying to deal with them instead of Carlton. Maybe we already know who they are selecting with picks 1 and 2.

North Melbourne, Fremantle and Collingwood all have picks ahead of us so the club must feel that one of those clubs will take our planned selection before we have a chance to use any of our picks.

So who could we be chasing? You would think it would have to be a midfielder.

Sounds like a saints thing to do. Would be pretty stupid given theres only two standout guns in Rayner and Dow. They will be gone by 3
7,8 we could get 2 of bonar/cerra/stephenson

Zero chance anyone would trade 7 & 8 for 3.

We would want 3 + David Cunningham for 7 & 8.

Very interesting and thanks for sharing. Just had a look at the draft table... know points isn't everything but would a future second round cut it...? On points is does.

8 and future second FOR 3

Apparently next year's draft is amazing but we hear this every year.

And what about the option of keeping one of 7&8 and splitting the other into two picks around 20-25. Assuming (and I have no idea) the talent is relatively even from 8-20-25. We need to wait and see what offers come out way

Think the strategy will be to try for top end picks - we've had a few in the 18-25 range and prob don't need anymore. But I'm speculating.

Dunstan
acres
McKenzie
Goddard
White
Wright

Not as promising a bunch as we would prob like...

The club has said they might be willing to move up but I would be very disappointed if they did. I think it would be squandering a valuable rare position.

The only comfort I take is that Bains is making the decision.

This idea won't please those who want big results next year but given the strength of the draft next year should we look at trading one of our first round picks to essendon in exchange for their first round next year and a second round pick... potentially in a 3 way trade..

Allows them to get their trades done even though we likely win in the long run.

Essendon could be top 4 next year. I wouldn't trade one of our firsts with anyone unless we think they could be a bottom 6 team next year.

Would Brisbane take 7 and 8 for 1 and 19 (compensation for Rocky) Cant see why they wouldnt particulary if they get Cameron for 12 and a decent trade for Schache

Then we take our pick of the mids (Cam Rayner) and use 19 on a young key back (Noah Balta). Then take the best talent available at 44. Id be more than happy with that.

Two compo picks already allocated so the lions second round pick is already 21 and likely to blow out to 23 or 24.

Would you give up Nick Riewoldt and Jason Cloke for Laurence Angwin and Daniel Motlop?

7 & 8 for pick 1 and 19 I would consider....but not for pick 3...no way.

More inclined to just take 7&8 to the draft.
Unfortunately this year is a year for using a second round pick to get a decent player.....Balic, Saad, Smith etc.

We either need to trade out to upgrade or use next year's which would probably be a mistake.

Lonie and our 3rd rounder for an early 2nd?

We already did this - We can’t be upset with giving up Pick 30-ish for Steele.

I reckon, given the general commentary about this years draft, we’d be better off trying to score more picks for next year. A future 2nd rounder might be more valuable than a late first for this year??

Don't trade. Hold.

USELESS FACT: The WADA case against Essendon (in Sydney as well) is exactly 10 years to the day that Australia qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

From AFL website:

Saints' top picks remain in play

St Kilda chief operating officer Ameet Bains said some of the "more productive discussions" the Saints had with rival clubs at Etihad Stadium on Monday centered around potential pick swaps involving their two first-round selections, No.7 and No.8.

If such a deal can be brokered, it's understood the Saints would prefer to move up the draft order by packaging their picks for an earlier selection and, most likely, a later pick that balances the deal.

Gold Coast, which holds pick No.2, would appear a potential trade partner given it also holds pick Nos. 19, 22 and 24.

The Brisbane Lions boast this year's best draft hand with picks Nos. 1, 12 and 18, while they are also expected to receive an end-of-first-round selection (No.18, which would push their second-round pick, currently No.18, to No.19) as compensation for Tom Rockliff's free agency departure to Port Adelaide.

It's highly unlikely the Lions would consider trading pick No.1 for St Kilda's two picks.

But it's believed the Saints have been approached about trading one of their picks for two later selections. The Lions are well placed to attempt such a deal, but their pursuit of Charlie Cameron is likely to cost them at least one of their picks from No.12 onwards.

Richmond also has pick Nos. 15 and 17, but if they were packaged for one of the Saints' picks, St Kilda would have to give something else to the Tigers to ensure a fair deal.

Swap with GC seems legit imo.
7 & 8 for 2 & 24 seems like a possibility.

So pick 1 or 2 might be worth it.
Rayner or Dow?

Could potentially use the later one on Dev Smith?
