What should we learn from the Tigers

So we are clearly looking at what we do, despite what the usual suspects think.


The club does not get everything right but to think that they do not review is fanciful.

Richmond have shown a midget fwd line is all the rage.
The Dogs did it last year as well.

Is the three tall fwd line now obsolete for the time being?

Club is making changes and they have hired Henry Playfair as you probably know.

Club may not have the financial capacity to make all the changes we want.

Ageee with you though, it appears significant changes are required.

What to learn from the Tigers? a couple of things, but..get smarter and more ruthless on and off the field. We played dumb footy far too much this season and ended the season with a whimper. Hopefully there will be a big think over summer about how things were done and how things could have been done a lot better and differently. One of the more disappointing seasons for me anyway.

It appeared that Richmond had 2 extra players on the ground today hence Adelaide could find no space and were under pressure with the ball finishing in Richmond hands

So pace

Pace So an opponent with the ball is confronted by 2 or 3 players immediately he takes possession

So we need support for Jack, some quick small forwards which we do not have (Gresham is fancy on his feet but not quick) and some quick small defenders able to immediately confront

The reliance that Geary is a lock down small defender therefore a first selection was blown asunder today because the Adelaide small forwards were afforded no space because of numbers

So team, not an individual

Then there is the ruck where both opposing rucks did work around the ground including taking telling defensive marks

The game will move on from today as it moved on from WB

What WB and Richmond show is that talking of challenging in some future year is a nonsense

You have to be in the game every year

Because these sides have come from outside the 8 in preceding seasons

And St Kilda's turn is well and truly overdue

Another thing is consistency.. we were shocking this season- all over the shop. We need to win a lot more contested ball across the ground over the course of games, and Richo needs to get a bit more killer instinct in the players..not sure if he is the man to do that though. Let's see what happens in 2018

They don't play grand finals at Etihad.

Everything fell into place for them at the right time.

Can't say they didn't deserve it; they clearly did and they had a magnificent finals campaign.

It also helped that the Crows were insipid.

That we need quality ball users, we need our on VFL team and we need to get a s*** load more passionate members on board.

The other thing I learnt today, is how to be real f****** jealous of other teams success.

What will not change is that if you have numbers around the ball and out number your opponent you will win.

And that means everyone needs to contribute equally.

WB got the numbers and flicked the ball everywhere.

Richmond got the numbers so every Adelaide player winning possession was confronted by 2 or 3 opponents immediately - and space and time to use the ball was denied.

As I put before having a "lock down" small defender on Betts was shown up today because Richmond had 2 or 3 defenders immediately denying him space.

And then they spread and use.

So St Kilda need to make some hard decisions.

Perhaps Bruce back to full back, giving us the "tag team" the Richmond defence has as its cornerstone.

Then pace, pace and more pace from there - and precision.

Same up forward, supporting Mc Cartin, Membrey and Battle.

A lot rests on Freeman and 7 and 8, which I would use in the Draft.

These 3 have to inject pace and precision.

If we can do that, we have the required point of difference to set the agenda (given we have a contribution from the ruck replicating the performance of both lead rucks today - they can actually cover the ground and mark the ball)

When Tigers had a poor season last year, finished 13th, board was in strife, coach nearly sacked.....

Dion Prestia despite all that enthusiastically nominated Richmond as his club of choice.
I reckon this spark was crucial to re igniting the flagging spirits....

I would love a good player to nominate us as their preferred team.....Geelong seems to have 3 or 4 options each year, likewise Hawthorn, Collingwood....God, even Carlton seem to be the current flavour of the month.

Prestia got Caddy to come and they remind me of the Brad Johnson & Rohan Smith combo of best mates exuding posituvity.....

If we have a stable board and if we can keep Matt Finnis for the next 4 years we will probably be building the right foundations. Not sure if Matt is as passionate about the Saints as Benny Gale is for his Tigers, but I think he is as competent and can help the club grow and strive for the ultimate

Believe it or not I think a lot of credit has to go to Leppa... He's tactically astute much more than Hardwick.
In the pre season games Leppa suggested they try a smaller forward line than the regular three talks as they were far to stagnant.
Though it showed signs Hardwick decided to go traditional .

As fate would have it, injuries to talls meant they had no option later in the season. According to an interview with Hardwick the guy who kicked all the goals (Townsend) was given a game and instructed just to tackle like mad , he kicked about six or seven (I think) and the rest is now history.

Now this actually raises an interesting point. (Well, to me anyway.)

Everyone is (now) going on about the supposed genius of the Tugger's admin' for holding onto Dimsim. Given how they played last year, especially the last three games. Players weren't even trying. Even Jack R was supposedly so pissed off at his team mates lack of effort, he was reportedly seriously considering trying to join his cuz...

So, without the gift of 20/20 hindsight, and after seven years of nothing, how could a competent administration have possibly held onto that coach???

Genius? Bravery? Blind belief?

Or, was it the because earlier that season they extended his contract, and the pay out if they sacked him (financial and embarrassment) would have been just too great???

One thing we all learnt after the game... the value of capsicum spray.

Police made several arrests and used capsicum spray to quell rowdy Richmond fans on Saturday as the Tiger Army celebrated their Grand Final victory against the Adelaide Crows in a massive street party.

Thousands of Tigers fans descended on Swan street in Melbourne and partied into the early hours of Sunday morning in celebration of breaking their 37-year premiership drought.

Footage captured and shared on social media showed fans jumping on cars, burning Crows’ scarves and climbing buildings.

A dozen or so fans surrounded one car at the intersection of Punt Rd and Swan St, jumped on the vehicle’s roof and opened its boot.

While Victoria police were initially impressed by the crowd’s behaviour at the MCG, as the evening wore on fans began to run amok.

By the final siren, police said they had booted 20 people from the ground and arrested 10 for offences including drug possession, being drunk and disorderly, deception and assault.

Yes.
Balme, Caracalla and Leppitsch all came in at the end of 2016.
Fairly significant changes in one hit I would have thought.
