St Kilda Strategic Plan 2014-18- We need to get a move on!
In the St Kilda Strategic Plan there were a lot of goals to be met BY 2018....
Well by 2018 is basically now, end on 2018 if you wish to be generous.
http://sainters.net/uploads/140313-Stra ... -Email.pdf
So even if it is by the end of 2018 we are going to need one spectacular off-season and season to (Note ALL BOLD TEXT ARE MY COMMENTS):
VISION
• By 2018 we will be admired as a competition leader in recruiting, player development and coaching. COMPETITION LEADER? NIL IN ALL THREE. OK IN RECUITING, POOR IN DEVELOPMENT AND OK AT BEST IN COACHING
• Our commercial model will be distinct, created around innovation and astute commercial initiatives. I AM CONFIDENT THAT WE HAVE IMPROVED HERE. NOT SURE ABOUT INNOVATIVE THOUGH
• We will be passionate and unwavering in our pursuit of success. HARD TO MEASURE
• A club respected and admired by all. I THINK WE ARE BETTER REGARDED< BUT NOT ADMIRED BY ALL. More than a football club. I THINK THAT YES THE CLUB HAS IMPROVED HERE QUITE MARKEDLY> PLUS I THINK THAT THAT THEY ARE A BETTER CLUB FOR MEMBERS AGAIN
MISSION
By 2018 we will -
• be a top four side that is positioned to be a consistent premiership contender. THIS YEAR NO> NEXT YEAR WILL TAKE SOME DOING
• have more than 50,000 members in Australia MEMBERSHIP HAS CLEARLY IMPROVED AND THEY ARE A CHANCE TO GET TO 50K BY END OF 2018
• have 10,000 members in New Zealand FAIL
• deliver annual surpluses year on year to enable investment into our key strategic initiatives that will underpin a prosperous future I HAVE NOT CHECKED< BUT I BELIEVE WE ARE DOING OK BUT NO GREAT
• reduce debt OK
• have strong Trans-Tasman business and corporate connections FAIL
• have a working environment that continues to attract the very highest calibre of people WE ARE MORE HARMONIOUS< BUT IAM NOT SURE THAT WE ARE ATTRACTING THE VERY HIGHEST CALIBRE PEOPLE
• have an admired culture, built on a foundation of respect and accountability HAS IMPROVED
• grow our presence in the Bayside region, our heartland HAVE IMPROVED
• have robust and effective community programs that enrich our key member target areas in Australia and New Zealand ?????????????????
• complete the refurbishment of Moorabbin as a football, community and retail hub WELL UNDERWAY AND SO A BIG TICK HERE AS THESE TYPES OF PROJECTS HAVE LOTS OF RED TAPE AND ARE HARD TO IMPLEMENT.
By 2020 we will have our second premiership WELL WE WILL NEED TO GET OUR SKATES ON.

St Kilda's blueprint for pre-2020 flag
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-03-13/s ... ad-to-2018
March 13, 2014 7:30 PM
The Saints unveiled their "strategic framework" for 2014-2018 to the club's members and key stakeholders at their season launch on Thursday night.
The plan is to deliver Grand Final success before 2020 – which will be the Saints' second flag after their sole 1966 triumph – and ensure the club is in the top four by 2018.
Free agency isn't on the agenda for the next two seasons but they expect to be serious players in the market in 2016. WE HAVE GAINED THREE FAs IN MEMBREY, ROBBO, AND BROWN. THIS DOES NOT MAKE US SERIOUS PLAYERS THOUGH.

Re: St Kilda Strategic Plan 2014-18- We need to get a move o
There are two alternatives for a CEO who delivers a five year plan ...
One is if you are planning to stick around make sure the objectives are vaguely worded and hence impossible to measure.
The other is if you are forced to be specific and hence measurable, make sure you have left before the five years is up.
Mmmm ... must be time our CEO moved on!

Every club puts out this sort of stuff and the expectations are high. Doesn't mean it will play out. Pretty sure if you look at Gold Coast and Richmond's grand plans from a few years ago it hasn't work out. Just as an example.
The business world and most big orgs do this sort of vision plan stuff. Everyone aims high but in reality it never all works out for anyone!!!

To win their 13th flag by 2020 and to crack 75,000 members.
They have 72.7K in 2017 and so good odds that they will crack the 75K next year.
But yes I agree these plans are put in place to stretch things. so time to reassess. However overall the footy department is not where they and we would have hoped despite a lot of fawning over our list management team.

"No plan survives contact." - Erwin Rommel. German General WWII. Or it might have been Brynne Edelsten.

I need a drink.
I havent seen this before. Its a brilliant read, and its inspiring!
and its also late 2017 so pretty puzzling and gut wrenching.
* Im thinking memberships might stall next year. But anything remotely close to this years would be fantastic.
* Im not sure we are considered a competition leader, or respected or admired. Depends what thats measured on. FOR ME. That would be Geelong, Hawks, Richmond.

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

He held the rank of General who served as a Field Marshall of the Wehrmacht in WWII. A bit confusing, but you serve as both simultaneously. General was his official Rank, Field Marshall was his additional operational title.MickThomas wrote:I think Rommel had the rank of Field MarshallGregPackhamsHeadband wrote:"No plan survives contact." - Erwin Rommel. This is a positioning/marketing document and nothing more than a long wish list.
How did the goal of having 10,000 New Zealand members get through? Who came up with that?
Good to have a few stretch goals but they should be practical and achievable. Completely unrealistic.
Silly and unrealistic goal which makes me question the other objectives.

Gotta' have dreams.
Let's be honest, 18 clubs are planning to win a flag in the next 5 years, I like that we had a bold vision and reasonably solid strategy, even if it doesn't result in us becoming the "juggernaut" Watters spoke of many years ago.

Re: St Kilda Strategic Plan 2014-18- We need to get a move o
We got New Zealand completely wrong. Dumb idea. Still trying to make up for leaving Tassie.
And we got free agency totally wrong. We lost Goddard and thought that we could simply poach a few stars like buying lollies at a shop just because Essendon did it to us. Completely mis-read how infrequently players would move. I'm not sure what the answer is on this. If we can't pry a player out of GWS offering +$1 million a year then we may as well go back to the drawing board.
I'm kinda happy with everything else. Unlikely we'll win a flag any time soon but I'm not sure I give a s***.

Not a marketing ploy. Everyone on staff was talking up the rebuild and our goal of being top four. Pelchen and AR both crapped on in 2014 about how by 2018 we'd be top 4 after using our brilliant trading power and massive war chest to pilfer the entire afl.
I hope we are but also wish someone would just be honest and say we set the bar high and we were hopeful but cocked up. Thats real. But instead they just keep moving the goal posts and pretending we are the idiots who thought 2018 was when we'd be on top.

It's ok to have goals, anyone can but if you can't back it up with execution what is the point?

Yeah I know, but 18 clubs have exactly the same goal, some have twice the funds and training facilities, some have bigger salary caps, some play 11 games against a side travelling interstate, some have access to players that no-one else does. Some cheat with supplements and brown paper bag payments.SaintPav wrote:It's ok to have goals, anyone can but if you can't back it up with execution what is the point?

Weak management always frame their objectives in open language with very little numerical language so that they cannot be measured and so gives them wiggle room.
The reason why people find visions, missions and objectives so pointless is that they are usually framed in vague platitudes that are impossible to measure.

Yes but this was post Watters and done when we weee stone motherless last. In 2014 without a proper strategic plan we were nothings. If you don't have a proper plan to sell you've got no hope.dragit wrote:Gotta' have dreams.

The plan gave us some hope and it was sold quite well at the time. I certainly used it to get me through those Shyte years.
I broke it down to a micro level - early on I was happy if we won one quarter of footy, then the following year two quarters to now only being happy with actual wins
i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.
