The trade/free agent cupboard seems to be pretty bare this year. I can't see us getting any A graders now. As for developing players looking for a new home, there's been very little talk around that, too. Could be a year of very little player movement
So much of the stuff on this thread can just easily be found on any legitimate website - afl, sen, superfooty, real footy, zero hanger, etc. or come from the radio or tv.

I think Bruce, Acres, Membrey, Billings, Sinclair and Gresh will be huge improvements next year.
Goddard, McCartin, White and Freeman the potential to at least make an impact and improve our squad.
Pick 7 and 8? That's at least a couple years before we feel their impact unless they are ready to go.

Pick 7 Stephenson, Pick 8 Coffield. Would be STOKED with those two. Both could be guns. Tall, Athletic, fast.
NO: Motlop, Trengove, Menzel
YES: ROCKYbut going to carlton, KELLY staying, LEVER to melbounre (WTH WHY?), STRINGER to geelong??, ABLETT to geelong
Matera, Alir Alir? Not very exciting. We better not get geelongs or Carltons crap that they move on to upgrade. We have the best cgraders in AFL time for A-Graders or nothing.

The guy is 27 yrs 6 months old now. That means he will be 28 next season. Strategically that means to me that you only get him if you believe that we area genuine flag threat in the next 2 to 3 seasons. Are we? Next year no. 2019 probably no. 2020 maybe if we can get some extra elite talent by acquisition, draft or some already at the club stepping up and most likely all 3.
So to me UNLESS we are landing some elite ready to play talent this off-season then Rocky is a no, as he is just a year or two too old. To me he would only make sense if we are landing enough good talent that we start to threaten from 2018.
With the BigFish Strategy looking to be a bust I think the club needs concentrate on strengthening our 26 yrs and under players and that acquisitions need to be 26 and under. That is one reason I think Stringer at 23 needs to be closely looked at as one of the few available players that is gettable.
Go to draft, pick up Stringer if we can and look for some good young players from other clubs such as GWS that may get squeezed out.

This. We may yet be able to salvage something from the situation. No point in going after Rocky, methinks. The trick now is to try and nail potential elite talent from someone else's list. Carlton has been trying to do that by mining GWS's surplus talent, with some success that is likely to bear some fruit in the near future. Caleb Marchbank and Pickett spring to mind. A Steele like pick up would do nicely at the moment of it didn't cost too much. It's frustrating that we haven't been able to land the big fish, but all is not lost. Yet.
As Moose and Squirrel observed: all big fish were caviar first. Have faith Boris, dollink. Pass on the sardines. Fully baited lines 7 & 8 will turn out great.

Matthew Kennedy from GWS would be a good get... particularly if we hold on to 7 and 8... perhaps use a 2018 2nd
Would mean we. bring in 3 good youngsters in the off season... a mid and a KPD at 7 and 8 plus the mid Kennedy
Seems he could be a Jack Steele type deal... will be in demand but we managed to get the man of...lets hope for a repeat
I read in the paper today Darcy Lang is looking to move on from Geelong for more midfield time. Was pick 16 in the 2013 super draft so along with Billings, Freeman, Dunstan and Acres from the same draft it would make a solid core of players ready to begin their dominate football form. Any interest Jaxons?

I think our best strategy will involve slow and steady incremental improvement through picking up a few potential cheappies mentioned above, our top ten draft picks and natural improvement. Hopefully we can add a superstar to our list by 2020.

i think posters are disappointed because our team as it is, is a fringe finals club. play good consistent footy and we're in the running for a minor spot. we need quality and our own isn't quite ready or certain. so drafting a kelly is a shortcut and a certainty. now we're back to where we are. no draft pick is going to improve us enough by themselves next year unless we get very, very lucky. so a longer wait. but wasn't it always a 2018 deadline for finals? so in that respect we're still on track.
