Mav Weller news

Post: # 1698555Post MickThomas »

There are some whispers that Weller
is being offered to the Lions and Norf
for draft picks or maybe one of their players.
One option involves giving the pick to Doggies in exchange for Stringer.

The source is credible.
It may not happen, of course, but the coaches have apparently all agreed
that Mav has stalled and is not seen to be part of the future.

Gone over it before but Weller deserves a list spot with the Saints. He had issues this year with injuries and form.

But it all depends on how a trade would look and what players/picks are involved if Weller should or would be moved on.

So we get pick ~ 50 for Weller and give that to the Doggies for Stringer?

Where do I sign.

So quick to write off the injured.

Roberton 2 years ago really struggled with his injury.

Weller struggled this year. So did Hickey and Steven.

Playing injured does not make them crap players

Then don't play if you're injured and can't perform. It's quite simple I reckon. Kieran Jack showed that at the start of the year. was playing crap - rested- came back from injury and played well. It's so simple it's brilliant.

Now I know all players carry injuries, but the age old saying that once you decalre yourself right to play you are 100% fit is never truer as far as I'm concerned. I say it to my kids all the time. Nobody really cares if you're carrying an injury, all they care about is how you perform. If you can't perform then DON'T PLAY.

Mav was a shadow of the player of he was in 2016 and I can't think or any reason for that other than injury. Playing on a bad ankle robs players of agility, speed, balance and confidence. I assume the only reason he played out the year was because our coaches decided Weller going at 70% was a better option than Long, Wright or Lonie in the seniors.

Unless we're likely to get a decent return for him or he is a key part of a trade for Kelly I hope we hold onto him. He is worth more than a pick after 25 in this draft.

if Mav goes does that mean we dont have to trade for his Freo brother. Many Saints supporters seem to want to build an incestous club where the coaches are all ex St Kilda players and all our draft selections have some family connection. Strange stuff although it is probably just a good a reason to draft a player as we seem to have done the last few years with us wanting players that cant kick and have some disability but come from a good family and is a good guy.

Maybe we could trade for the bont as well - he is Dal Santo's cousin after all).

If he was injured why did he play two games in the VFL?

Agree 100% with posts re his ankle injury. Mav at 70% was still better than Long or Lonie at 100%.

He had a 4-6 week ankle injury, but only missed one game. Then rolled the same ankle twice within next 6 weeks. Try kicking a ball and running out games and kicking a ball shot up with painkillers. Not easy with little feeling.

He should have taken 3-4 weeks when ankle went initially. He did everything possible to get it right (ice bucket every 2 hours overnight x 7 nights ). His own determination and grit to get back in cost him.

Don't write him off. Take a look at what an ankle injury did to the Geelong captain on Friday night. Not comparing players, more pointing out a slow down in effectiveness.

It will all come down to what we are offered for him. He had a bad season and it is he's own fault. If you are injured, don't play until better. I don't think he will get traded independently i.e. he will be part of a deal to get a better player to St Kilda. It just depends on whom. i.e would you give him and pick 7 or 8 for Kelly?

Then why the hell was he playing?

That is just plain asshattery.

If player is injured to the point where it is affecting his form, then he shouldn't be playing at any level. Mav, like many of our players this year just didn't do that little bit extra when required and I thought he was pretty selfish with the ball in the forward line- need better from one of our leadership group.

Any trade that benefits us should be looked at.

Absolutely.

Why the hell would you bother playing him under duress?

Seriously that just does not make a lick of sense.

Players play injured all the time, particularly leaders, if you think players are all 100% fit, your kidding yourselves!!!!!

Like I said a dozen times, all we succeeded in doing by persevering with a clearly hampered Mav, was completely destroying his reputation

He had a stinking season in a team full of players that can play a similar role

If a deals on, I'd say take it. Stringer is an upgrade and even if he plays elsewhere, we have a ton of players for that possi

Players are rested for their welfare in the likelihood of more damage and threat to their health. If they are passed they generally play. This doesnt mean they are 100% fit and ready to produce their best. This type of risk made Roo the champion he was and also contibuted to the fact he is no longer playing.

If you or the club truly think Mav is a 'leader' at AFL level then we are seriously delusional.
He is a battler at best and nowhere near good enough to play injured.
53 goals from 108 games says it all.
