More likely he's just like anyone else and feels comfortable with familiarity and likes hanging out with mates.

Re: Kelly is coming
If he is staying at GWS, wouldn't you think he'd do the right thing by the club and his teammates by announcing it, if not actually signing a new contract? Especially as it would give his team an enormous lift before the finals. I think the longer he doesn't announce his intention to stay, the more the chances are that he's leaving. I just hope he doesn't go to Carlton. I'll pay for John Wick to hunt him down if he does.
I think you're pretty tough, don't I?

Josh was asked to give the GWS an answer asap to help with their list management. Since then the GWS have signed a few players almost out of the blue but still no word on Kelly. Is this because Kelly has told the club he won't be returning in 2018? Too much of a coincidence for me.
The fact he hasn't resigned is also huge news. If Kelly was staying at GWS why before their finals campaign wouldn't have he signed and it been announced. Why would the Giants let this linger over finals series..?
They wouldn't and Josh wouldn't. If he was staying he would have signed.
Two things will happen, he will join the Blues or the Saints. If the Giants have to choose, they will trade with the saints, we have the biscuits. If Kelly isn't fussed between us or the Blues then Great news....my belief, the deal was done early this year.
Again do you think we will give him the number 12..?
Let me think about your process of deliberation...well, if I was wanting the very best contract possible I would wait until I had played so brilliantly and helped my club win it all that they then had to sell the kitchen sink to keep me.
I think it makes perfect sense. It could be as you say though. Just seriously can't see why he would leave and come over.

Re: Kelly is coming
Agree that it's odd they haven't announced it if he's said he'll stay. Just possible he's told Giants that he wants a flag. And that he"ll stay unless they win it this year - in which case he'll take the money and go.

Re: Kelly is coming
Why is no announcement odd?
Robbo was meant to have decided to stay a while back. But the announcement was made today once duration and $$ were sorted.
Why should Kelly be any different than Robbo?
Part of their bargaining power is that they may still leave. So why would Kelly give up that chip? Robbo didn't. Nor did Billings. Nor did Martin.

Re: Kelly is coming
It's odd by definition because it's unusual that a star player involved in the finals isn't signed by the beginning of September if he's going to stay. My memory isn't perfect but the last one I can remember is Trav in 2012 - and we all remember how destabilising that was. You might be right that Kelly is playing hardball going deep into the season. But if he's planning to stay, it is, by definition, odd.

That's what I was saying - something is up if he can't sign on right before his team is on the finals quest for its first premiership.GregPackhamsHeadband wrote:If he is staying at GWS, wouldn't you think he'd do the right thing by the club and his teammates by announcing it, if not actually signing a new contract? The effing Dope Fiends are apparently eyeing him, too. I'll be furious if we lose out to either of those two nemesis clubs. I'll also be scathing of St.Kilda FC for letting it slip. We ought to be throwing everything and the kitchen sink to get him. I fear the rebuild will fail if we don't get him as we don't have that elite match winner, which seems to be in order for any team vying to open a premiership window.

Re: Kelly is coming
A caller on SEN this morning said that a good family friend of a top 10 2018 draft pick, was interviewed by GWS and when the young fella quizzed them about why they were talking to him when they don't have any picks in the top 10 he was told that they would have 2 picks inside the top 10 come draft day.
I know it could be all bulls***, but then again maybe we're still a chance for Kelly

Heard this too and liked it. I may be wrong but I think they said two first round picks not two top 10 but if true would be great

A guy on bigfooty is convinced that Josh Kelly and Lever are both coming to the Saints. He or she has been adamant now for over a month.

If we get Lever and Kelly.... LEVER AND KELLY...
I will spend thousands of my dollars at the club next year that I would normally be more inclined to keep.
I have no faith we can get Lever AND Kelly.

If that's an accurate anecdote, then its really interesting. However we don't know if it has any substance.saintbob wrote:A caller on SEN this morning said that a good family friend of a top 10 2018 draft pick, was interviewed by GWS and when the young fella quizzed them about why they were talking to him when they don't have any picks in the top 10 he was told that they would have 2 picks inside the top 10 come draft day.

Just Kelly would get us into finals contention. Do you really want us to get Stringer?spert wrote:If we got Kelly and Stringer then we would be final eight next season.

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

Re: Kelly is coming
They key is too overpay the oldest players not the younger players.Moods wrote:Having said, because we have to pay 92% or whatever it is of the salary cap - we find that good-average footballers end up getting grossly overpaid. Case in point is Billings allegedly getting 500k a year when he signed on earlier in the year. Now I think he will be worth that money eventually - but not yet. The salary cap as a concept is fantastic, but it means that certain players in the best teams get grossly underpaid and players in the worst teams get grossly overpaid. How do teams like Carlton and Brisbane manage to pay over 90% of their salary cap to very ordinary footballers? The top 6 players in each team must be on ridiculous money comparative with their actual abilities.supersaints wrote:Thanks Jaxons,
From my point of view, while I would have been happy to see him in Saints colors , we would probably have to pay overs and unbalance our whole salary cap for him.
So all of the " stars"out if contract that were supposed to be leaving ended up staying, as they usually do ( Danger was different in that he was going back to Moggs creek ) Happens every year. I think most of the time the managers are just trying to extract the best possible contract from their existing club ala Dustbin
That means you can keep increasing younger player salaries as they deserve more or buy in players from other clubs.
When you need access to more salary cap you retire a older player who is no longer required.
