Instead of paying huge bucks on established players - why not throw huge bucks on draft analysis and expertise to make sure we get our picks right this year?

The way around that is to dump a heap of money on the oldest players so that one day you don't have to tell an undeserving player they have to take a pay cut (like happened with Luke Ball).
With older players the money under the cap returns to the kitty in only a few years not a decade.
Keep payments low to young players, pay big bucks later when needed like to keep a potential free agent or to attract a free agent.

Though the Stkilda Plan, whether one agrees with it or not, was to land a Big Fish, and North by their process have made it much harder for the Saints to achieve this.

North on the slide should have been just maximising early picks, but have instead been desperate to land a Big Fish or two at whatever the cost, and so have driven up the price to massive heights. We had banked the TPP for the max of 5 years, prepaid players etc as this was meant to be the year. Maybe it will still be the year though Kelly is now the one green bottle standing and if we do land him it will be for huge $$ too. so in this our supposed Big Fish year the $$ advantage that we were meant to have above and beyond every other club is not there.

That the TPP is being hugely bumped up in 2018 has made it easier for all clubs to make big offers.

Lately the club has backpedalled somewhat by saying by trade or FA.

I think when the Saints started on this path they thought Free Agency would become common for BigFish. It has in the main however been more a path for guys not getting opportunities at their clubs to swap clubs and these guys are not BigFish.

The coming exception could be when a swag of GWS all hit FA at the same time and where GWS would not be able to offer them all good money to stay. But that is not this draft period.

I know RL was quoted for " I dont want choirboys" and we had that bubble thing going but really no different
