For all the doom and gloom .....
The 11 year ladder as discussed on Talking Footy has that we are the 8th best performing team with 121 wins 4 draws from 242 games - but still less than 100%.
I was surprised - I know we had some good years - but we also had some shockers in there!!!!

Re: For all the doom and gloom .....
Interesting stat. People like to bag the Saints but I think we've been pretty good as a whole the past 20 years. No flags but we won a heap of finals in that period since 1997.
Have we done better on the field than 3 of Melbourne's bigger clubs in Richmond, Carlton and Essendon during the past 20 years? I would say yes.

Re: For all the doom and gloom .....
Between 1965 and 1973 we won the most games of any team in those nine seasons in the VFL. We were in three grand finals for one premiership. In the same amount of time Carlton and Richmond won three each!
Also - Hawthorn only made the finals four times in fifty years at Glenferrie until the end of 1973 but won two Grand Finals!
In the 2000s we were one of the best performed sides of the decade - all of our peers from that era - including the Bulldogs - saluted at least once.
We should have won 12 games this year and finished with a percentage of over 100, even allowing for the more difficult fixture, and we couldn't even do that.
I still feel the gloom and doom. Sorry.

The only stat that matters is premierships, all that other stuff is just meaningless stats that mean nothing.

2003 - 12th
2006 - 10th
2015 -10th
That is the worst Geelong have done since I can remember.
3 flags in the last decade and they have only missed the finals 3 times in 15 years ffs. Not gone below 12th!
Incredible.

Crazy to see the likes of the Crows and North Melbourne so high on that ladder, considering they haven't played in a grand final since 1998 and 1999 respectively.

Even though it was before these stats started, a lot of people - except their players then i guess - forget how the Crows choked in 2 prelims in 2005/6, one which was at home.Sainternist wrote:Crazy to see the likes of the Crows and North Melbourne so high on that ladder, considering they haven't played in a grand final since 1998 and 1999 respectively.

Re: For all the doom and gloom .....
When mistakes are made they are beauties - the Scott Watters project cost untold harm including putting the list back a few years. The policy of letting certain coaches have too much say in list management has been unfortunate and conversely AR probably didn't have enough input in years 1 and 2 of his era. Ross Lyon coached for the very short term personnel wise and SW compounded that terribly - remember Tom Lee and Terry Milera. That's a lot of catch up to be doing. AR has had a hard job and some baggage to deal with including managing Nick's last seasons, limited resources and a fair bit of him being always a bridesmaid scepticism. Hopefully he now has clear air and can live or die by what happens next year. I'd suggest he knows unless the side wins 13 games + next year Lenny is thereabouts. Until the book comes out why M. Weller ( & J. Lonie) has had so many games will be a mystery, unless the alternatives are just not up to the required minimum standard and that would be a worry. Gloomy even.
Re: For all the doom and gloom .....
this year i over expected so felt alot flatter and pissed off than should have. draw was harder thrashings less, played alot better when we traveled. (bar sydney) sure we finished lower then last year but overall measured up maybe tiny bit better when draw is taken into account. Port loss and Melb no show killed it for us. (Bombers whole different thread.) this year we should good glimpses but still lack the consistency. hope next year we can change those around and we should make finals.Sainter_Dad wrote:The 11 year ladder as discussed on Talking Footy has that we are the 8th best performing team with 121 wins 4 draws from 242 games - but still less than 100%.
