Out of the Kelly race?
Are we out of the Kelly race?
Conversation NOW seems to be Carlton or GWS.
What would we give up for him?
Pick 7 & 8 ended up being a little disappointing... the Hawks picked looked like a top 3 pick for a long time.
Any chance we could send one of the first rounders & a player up to Brisbane for the number 1/2 pick?r

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
Hard to tell with Kelly. Maybe it will depend on how GWS goes in the finals. He looks like having no intentions of signing until post season.
I'm happy with using 2 x top ten picks at the worst. Any player in the top 10 can turn out as just as good as eachother in the long run. Good chance these 2 blokes will become walk up starters in 2-3 years and give 10+ years to the Saints.
Think Joel Selwood was pick 7 or 8. He was a gun into his 2nd year already. Could turn out like that for us.

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
I'd like to think that the club has learnt something from the Carlisle trade.
No point flagging your desperation.
Imagine going to a house auction, and before the auction, inside the house, saying in a loud voice
"I LOVE this house, check out the loungeroom, theatre room, man-cave- OMG"
Stay under the bloody radar and let the media muppets speculate all they like.

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
I'm wondering, what do we do with all our extra cash if we don't land Martin or Kelly, which is looking like the most likely outcome?
I assume we have to spend it somewhere? I'd really hate for us to overpay for an average player just so we land something...

Most likely we will get some b graders instead and overpay them. Won't help us win a flag though.The_Dud wrote:I'm wondering, what do we do with all our extra cash if we don't land Martin or Kelly, which is looking like the most likely outcome?

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
Made me laugh! At the auction with wife and kids and I'm the highest bidder, the property is passed in and the agent invites me into the house to negogiate. I try to bluff and not increase my offer, but my 10 yo 'tears up' and offers to forgo his pocket money if we can get this house...MickThomas wrote:I'd like to think that the club has learnt something from the Carlisle trade.

Plenty of cap space to make a grandfather offer to both Mav and Sav.
A million a season each. Five year deals.

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
Damian Barrett would say so
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.
Re: Out of the Kelly race?
Would we take Martin? I have a suspicion we are into him.
History suggests that if you haven't signed by now that the chances of staying are slim.

It doesn't sound likely, but I honestly can't see why we shouldn't be pushing hard.Rocket wrote:Would we take Martin? I have a suspicion we are into him.

He is a top 5 player in the comp, super durable… seems to have got himself together off the field (maybe not)
At this point in time we could probably pay him 1.5 million per year and still have cap space.
We just need to be absolutely ruthless in going after talent like Martin, players of that quality don't come up very often. We'll be filthy if he's running around for someone like Hawthorn and they are back in the 8 as a result.
Ruling ourselves out back in May just seems stupid.

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
I think Martin will stay at Richmond as they have a huge membership and wealthy coterie groups to grease the wheels.
We need to give Kelly an offer he can't refuse.

According to Robbo Essendon are now a big chance for Kelly.

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
I agree, Kelly is the likely one.
Considering we've been fed the club line for the last few years that we'll strike when the times right I'll be dissapointed if we can't snag a genuine A grader.

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
We need to go all out for Kelly.
Massive contract and whatever needs to be done for a trade.
Sell the farm for this gun!
Half measures and our usual conservative nonsense won't cut it.

I'm feeling pretty confident we'll reel in the big fish that is Josh Kelly. It has been on the cards for a long time.

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
The tea leaves here say Kelly and Martin will stay with current clubs, however Saints will pick up one or more of Harrison Himmelburg, the Adams Kennedy & Tomlinson or less likely Matt Buntine. The mid gun of guns remains unnamed in the draft, but he is there all right.

As we speak Dodoro is putting together a killer package of Mark Baguley, their third rounder and a small container of random white powder they found underneath the paper shredder.
That's his final offer.

Actually, his final offer can't be published here. Hopefully, Kelly doesn't have any pets.dragit wrote:As we speak Dodoro is putting together a killer package of Mark Baguley, their third rounder and a small container of random white powder they found underneath the paper shredder.

Re: Out of the Kelly race?
I hate the term "sell the farm" for many reasons
- Putting all your eggs in one basket and then having that basket do an ACL
- Putting all your eggs in one basket and then have the 3x B&F winner leave because he's taken less to keep people together
We need to sell players a vision
Convince them that they should come and play for us, take less and join this core.
I honestly think that it's more important for us to keep adding to the core that we have organically. Try & pay the key players all the same amount ala Geelong & Hawthorn.
Culture wins flags, not individuals
