If Richmond can, Why Can't We?

Post: # 1690230Post GregPackhamsHeadband »

Long time reader, first time poster. I was looking at Richmond's season this year. Last year, they were written off, doomed to yet another rebuild. The coach hadn't won a final in seven years and the list was stuffed. Most, including me, had them in the bottom five. They brought in three recruits, Prestia (very average), Caddy (not much chop) and Nankervis, who made a good start but has hit a major flat spot.

Most of the improvement has come from within. The material that was already there. The coach brought in a couple of new assistants, changed the game plan and, viola! They are heading towards the top four! Yes, Shitmond!

They have two out and out champions in Dusty and Rance. Cotchin and Riewoldt are very good. Apart from those four, they don't have a lot more than we do. We have our own Riewoldt (for four more games at least), Jack Steven, Seb Ross and Jake Carlisle. We have many more potential improvers. Billings, Membrey, Bruce, White, Marshall, Gresham, Newnes, Roberton, Steele, McCartin and Freeman. All potential guns. Stevens, Geary, Webster, DMack and Hickey. Lots to work with. Add any two or three of Kelly, Hopper, Smith, Pittard and Rockliff and we are top four. You know it makes sense. Go saints!

We are on right track, had we won the games against Eagles (round 2) and aginst Port (last week) we would be close to Top 4.

Couple of good players next year should have as in good state.

He did get his haircut at the behest of a Tony Jewell, but under Jezza the headband was definitely there.

I sense a red herring here...plausible deniability, a phrase used in the military for decades (US especially)

I think you are WW in disguise

There was an interesting analysis of Richmond's gameplan in the Age recently.
In 2016 they ranked one of the highest in uncontested possessions.
This year they are one of the lowest.

Basically they changed from a side that chipped the ball around sideways/backwards to unmarked teammates playing keepings off "round and back again football" until they were forced to kick long to a flooded forward line where the ball was easily defended ...
... to a side that moves the ball quickly with long direct kicking - often to a contest but at least just a 1:1 marking contest with open space for crummers.

It has worked for them.

We in 2017 are playing the same keepings off rubbish that Richmond did last year.
We have two or three forward marking options in Bruce/Membrey/Paddy-Nick plus some crummers in Gresham/Lonie etc..
Perhaps Richo should take note and go with a more attacking "move the ball quickly to an open forward line" approach to give our marking forwards and crummers a chance to shine before the cavalry arrive?

Pretty sure in the famous GWS win we played run and gun footy. Problem with run and gun is you need a few gun players like the Tigers have to pull it off successfully

Welcome, GregPackhamsHeadband! (love the nickname, BTW)

Credit Hardwick for significantly tweaking their game plan after a disastrous 2016 campaign. They indeed recruited very well at the end of the season. It's incredible how Hardwick has managed keep his position at Punt Road, despite the history of impulsively wielding the axe at previous coaches. I hope they have a good finals campaign, but am skeptical given their recent history of choking in the first week of September. I hope we crush them again for Rooey's (supposed) swan-song

If I can find the YouTube footage of him on The Winners, I'll post it here, Devilhead. My sister had a massive crush on him and loved the red head with headband look. Each to their own, I guess. A very smart footballer, who probably would've played a lot more but for being at the saints at our lowest. He liked Jezza, but is less complimentary about Tony Jewell. He was a very fine player for Redan in the BFL, at a time the standard was very high.

We got so many players from there, just couldn't develop and keep them. Maurice O'Keefe was one of the best I ever saw up there. Only three years with the saints. Another victim of the move to the city or leave ultimatum. Tweeddale was another wasted talent. Muir, Baker, Perovic. The list goes on. Lost them or couldn't get the best from them. Peter Keil was good enough to win the B & F in his first year at the club, straight from country footy. We never did exploit that region well enough.

Carlton had Bendigo and mined it (pun intended) for all it was worth. Helped the bastards win seven flags in 20 years. Don't get me started on Hawthorn getting the Peninsula instead of us. Imagine Brereton, Matthews, Moore, Mew etc. in our teams of the 80's. Would've done a bit better than we did.

In the pre season practice matches he had extremely long hair kept off his face with a hippy like headband. He was ordered to cut it all off before the season started. I think he was a student teacher from memory.

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Spot on Selhurst Saint. He's still a performing arts teacher working in Weribbee. My sister thought he was so cute, he took Trev's spot in her heart! The headband made a reappearance at the Junction Oval when he booted a couple against the Roys. Good bloke, and very funny. No wonder Tony Jewell didn't like him!
