Spear tackle on Geary
I think it was Heeney who laid the spear tackle on Gears. It looked very dangerous as Geary had no chance of protecting himself in the fall.
Do posters think the MRP will look at it?
Commentators mentioned it was dangerous, but went on in glowing terms how the player was schooled in rugby tackling, even though such tackles are outlawed in rugby. Commentators are in love with Heeney.
Any lesser player than our courageous captain would have milked it for all it's worth and at least got a 50 metre penalty.
The way he put him down, slinging Gears neck and shoulder into the turf was frightening to see. I expected Gears bad shoulder to at least be injured.
Good on Gears, for showing it takes more than a dangerous, cowardly spear tackle to stop him.
I hope at least Heeney (?) gets a fine for his cowardly act - though I believe the act deserves a suspension.

Re: Spear tackle on Geary
It was worse than the one that cost Koby a suspension earlier in the season

Re: Spear tackle on Geary
I almost had an argument with my son over this one - he says that it wont be looked as because Geary jumped into it - I think the act of turning him warrants looking at - but now I do not believe it will be - they will say that a free was paid therefore end of story. I believe the act deserves the punishment - not the result.

Re: Spear tackle on Geary
Heaney should get at least 1 week for that. Far more dangerous than Koby's sling tackle. But of course he is an important player for the Swines, so the MRP will overlook it.
Spot on, Loris! The love for Heaney is nauseating. If Heaney had a background in boxing and punched somebody, they'd probably say it was purely instinctual as he was schooled in boxing.loris wrote:Commentators mentioned it was dangerous, but went on in glowing terms how the player was schooled in rugby tackling, even though such tackles are outlawed in rugby. Re: Spear tackle on Geary
great tackle. loved it. suffered a few of them in lunch time rugby games at school. but yes, too dangerous nowadays .heeney getting punished will come down to whether he was deemed to have lifted geary or whether geary's jumping before the tackle contributed to his going beyond horizontal. if it's deemed a spear tackle (lifted) then it's two weeks.

Re: Spear tackle on Geary
It was definitely a spear tackle - Geary was taken over the horizontal - but when grounded Geary did not put his arm out (thankfully) as the would have probably dislocated the shoulder.desertsaint wrote:great tackle. loved it. suffered a few of them in lunch time rugby games at school. but yes, too dangerous nowadays .heeney getting punished will come down to whether he was deemed to have lifted geary or whether geary's jumping before the tackle contributed to his going beyond horizontal. if it's deemed a spear tackle (lifted) then it's two weeks.
Will he go for it? My thoughts not likely.

Re: Spear tackle on Geary
Because Geary suffered no apparent after-effects-
he took the free and kicked well
He didn't go to the bench for treatment,
so a medical report will say "no after effects'
Koby's tackle in the Giant's game, resulting in a free to him,
gave him a delayed MRP suspension because of the concussion.
They seem to look at after-effects.
He got up, got a free, took the kick,
so MRP will say "free awarded, nuthin to see here"

Re: Spear tackle on Geary
I thought a spear needed to turn the player planting them head first into the turf.
I though a free kick was sufficient.
Not sure if Geary jumped or was just upward in momentum.

Re: Spear tackle on Geary
No a spear/dangerous tackle in both AFL and Rugby is turning the player past the horizontal so that they risk coming down on their head. The only reason that Geary didn't was that he had forward momentum keeping him going otherwise it would have been a head first drive into the ground.Joffa Burns wrote:I thought a spear needed to turn the player planting them head first into the turf.

Fair enough, probably counts as a spear tackle then and may get cited.Sainter_Dad wrote:No a spear/dangerous tackle in both AFL and Rugby is turning the player past the horizontal so that they risk coming down on their head. Re: Spear tackle on Geary
"Sydney midfielder Isaac Heeney has been cleared of any wrongdoing in a dangerous tackle on St Kilda captain Jarryn Geary.
The MRP found Heeney "took Geary straight to ground without using excessive force" after the St Kilda defender had leapt into the air before contact was made."
I recall that John Elliott had a turn of phrase that seems to fit this scenario ...

Re: Spear tackle on Geary
It pains me to say, but I'm fast losing respect for club legend Nathan Burke. He is part of this MRP farce where they pick and choose what gets cited and what gets ignored/who gets favoured!SemperFidelis wrote:"Sydney midfielder Isaac Heeney has been cleared of any wrongdoing in a dangerous tackle on St Kilda captain Jarryn Geary.

- Carlisle fined for instigating a melee. Murphy ignored. Rance (on the weekend) ignored. WTF?
- Heeney "straight to ground", yep, that is after lifting him past horizontal. WTF?
- Jumper punches to the head and tummy taps all year, graded low impact or insufficient force. Wait a moment, Dane Zorko, tummy tap, medium impact! WTF?
- Dustin Martin not graded intentional. Their own laws state off the ball/behind play incidents will be graded intentional. WTFx2?
Give me one flag & I'll go to my grave a happy man.

Typical MRP pardoning horseshit. Another Swines player not held accountable for a dangerous act. What's new!

at least we know the MRP is consistent
I reckon there's a secret ratings system at the MRP, behind all the negligent/impact stuff
First, they look at the team- Injectors, Swines, Pies, etc automatically get a 50% reduction in severity
before the 3 blind mice even look at the vision
A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

Re: Spear tackle on Geary
If Koby Stevens gets suspended for a tackle which was adjudicated as a holding-the-ball decision...
I reckon you're right, WS. The MRP simply cherry picks who has to answer to anything.
