OP is ridiculous.
Does the OP think Nick would accept being the 42nd paid player?
Roo won't play for under 500k. He will demand being a top 5 paid player.

Add to that no-one on here knows what is going on with his knee and what the risks are.

On top of that no way his ego will allow him to agree to playing just 12 games.
He will will want to run out even if on one leg.

This is by no means a simple discussion about whether he is better than our 40th player.

If Roo agrees to terms for ten games and 150k next year the club would sign him up now.

he looks so sore at the moment, that right now he looks done, i just wish they had rested early in the year when he was first obviously sore but tried to play through it

Roo looks to be really struggling at present. While not playing actually poorly it is starting to look like that he may well struggle next year.

In addition we are not a genuine finals threat and so the argument that he may help us to snag a flag is a hollow argument.

Up and till last week if someone asked me if he should play on next year I would have said yes. Now, I am more leaning on that we should go full into Rebuild Mark2.

Yes last week Battle was quiet in his debut. But after debuting last week he came and and smashed it for Sandy.

We will not be a genuine finals threat without SUBSTANTIAL development of the players we have, plus we need more new players as well. So I think the harsh reality for 2018 is that we will be better off getting development games into Paddy, Battle and Marshall that Roo playing a lot of senior football next year.

Paddy will be 22 next year. He needs to be playing senior games.

Players can't let go of their AFL careers because of the money they earn.

They all want to milk the cow way beyond the their ability to produce,

The club needs to have someone on their books who is ruthless enough to have enough forward thinking to tell Roo and Joey, It's time to go.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

If they both call time on their careers, it would prove how much they value the club
by recognizing the hard truth and letting others step up and develop.
Otherwise they are just killing development by hanging around

Roo could easily earn a decent amount either in the media or in a coaching role. He has massive respect in the industry and would command big dollars post footy. I doubt money is a huge driver for him to keep playing. Would be much easier for him to retire at the end of the year and let his knee recover somewhat. The poor bugger at 50 may be on one leg permanently.

I'm thinking he will undergo double knee replacement surgery before he turns 40

older saint wrote:I have been thinking the way the game is changing and player management of younger players becoming the norm , why not with Roo.

Assuming he wants to play surely he is better than the last player on the list . Why not working out once the fixture arises a system of when he does play and when rested , based on 6 day breaks, travel, opponents, and obviously form. Roo for 14-15 games a year is surely better than player 42 and if form doesn't warrant it not much lost really.

After last night, I think the answer is no.

Sorry Roo, but we need to put game time into Battle, Marshall
and Paddy.

He should retire with all the honour and respect he has earned. You dont want him to be regarded as a list clogger.

Breaks my heart to watch him being outrun and out pointed by guys not fit to carry his gear into the ground.

Pains me to say but he should reitre.

Rest this week then final send off against Eagles and that's it.

Saints need to get on with it.

It's heartbreaking, isn't it?

There's one consensus, however, that in retiring the two champion veterans in being a way of freeing up even more space in reeling in not just one big fish, but two. That would be the ultimate consoltaion, if true. Personally, I think the club may need to do something like that if this season is going to go the wayside.

I'm coming to this line of thinking too.

It's sad seeing lesser players run off him so, seeing him not being able to trust his knee(s) so his contested body work isn't strong enough to hold his ground, seeing him unable to turn or collect below his knees, so he's becoming a liability when the ball is on the ground.

i don't want a champion like Roo to go that one year too long, and get jeers and 'raspberries' from opposition supporters when he gets beaten in contests.

Nicky Dal on SEN today reckons they won't play next year. He's good mates with them.

Do we do a home game send off vs Norf in Round 22?

Prob is we don't know if we are finals contenders or not quite yet.

If we beat WCE then Melbourne we are a chance.

Assuming we go down to Port, a loss to either WCE or the Dees would be curtains re finals.

We can't retire Roo nor Joey and then play finals without them. That's disrespectful and wrong.

I'm picturing this scenario.
2018 and we have Josh kelly and maybe Rockcliff or similar.
We get the team stabilised as in we are playing consistent footy like 2009 and are right in the mix come finals time.
It's a year like this where anyone could come from anywhere in the eight and grab a flag.

If there was one player I could have on the list in a "game managed" role for the year it would be Roo.

Imagine he only played 10-12 games for the year but was fit and firing in all and we called on his services in the last dance !

Even if it didn't work out, let's give him the faintest of hopes.
We're not flushed with success as a club but we can show the AFL world we respect those that have given to the club.

Some might say retire Roo and Monty but are we really that much closer to snaring a flag if we do ?

Paddy isn't busting the door down through no fault of his own. Neither Goddard. Nor Pierce. Battle and Marshall are great prospects but a few years away from really delivering.
Until that is happening why not show due respect and give the club a slim chance at a flag in 2018 ?

Stuff finals. That's more short term thinking.

We need to get game time pronto into Marshall, White, Rice etc and anyone else who is having crack.

Start NOW and ease the pain later, perhaps.

Yes. And that's all there is to it. It is heartbreaking.

Riewoldt is one of our greatest ever. But even the greatest are brought down over time. It's like that superman vs doomsday comic where superman dies.

Heartbreaking.

Roo wants another crack at a flag and I wish he could, however what I've seen over the last few weeks is a worry.

With the exception of the Richmond game, where I think he found something for the occasion (he still looked proppy), he has been struggling. It could be his persistent knee injury, he is having trouble jumping and launching and he's turning like a semi trailer.

If its his knee, will it come good again or can it be cleaned up post season? If so, then I'm certain he'd still be a formidable player. However, how do you develop McCartin, Battle and Marshall if he goes aroun again?

If its not his knee, then I'm afraid the game is starting to go past him quick. Unfortunately it can happen suddenly. If so, Roo needs to retire.
