So it is a DEVELOPMENT Season now.

Post: # 1676349Post saintsRrising »

The Saints are clearly not going to have impact this year even if they somehow managed to scrape into the finals.

So it is time to concentrate on developing our youngsters.

Now we cannot play them all every week as there is noo point try to develop players with 100 point thrashings.

So what I would like to see now is rotating players through the team. Bring in Rice for say a 3 game stint. If he struggles then back he goes. But give him a taste and let him see what it takes to be at AFL Level.

Ever week say bring in a couple of players. Rotate some others out.

Now we are not bursting with talent outside of tonight's team. But Rice, White, Long, DMalk, Lonie, NOK. Even Marshall if it is now possible to promote 2 rookies.

Freeman will be worth a run too.

Keep Paddy in the seniors. He is going ok and just needs to rediscover some confidence in his kicking. Play him and develop him.

On the other side Gresham should be given brace of games playing midfield at Sandy. He is just going through the motions in the seniors at present.

You speak too much sense. Not sure if Richo is capable of comprehending the mess we are now in. Most teams blood a few players by now. Why haven't we? Are they simply not good enough or is Richo conservative beyond the norm??

The focus was clearly on making the 8 this year.

Focus now needs to be on the future. This includes bother developing players, but also in trying out players.

We need to keep sorting the wheat from the chaff too. We need to see how players go at senior level. Those players need to experience what it is like at the senior level so that they know how hard they will need to work.

Yep time for the CEO to develop and recruit a new senior coach to take over when Richo's contract expires.

Not all in one game no. But all those young guys need to be given senior games this year.

Goddard may be the last several of the season as he is probably not match fit yet.

Every game now we need say another 2 or 3 players being rotated through.

Need to play them more to find out. We need to get games into all our youth now.

Not all at once. But progressively.

Whilst sensible - this solution could take some time to implement SR. We have chaff by the bucketload.

Ok...I know a many are not happy that Battle played. But personally I think that we need to keep rotating through our younger players at present. Give them taste of senior level if they have no debuted, or some more games if they have not played for a while.

6 H&A Games left.

THIS WEEK
Long and DMak have both had a run of two games each. Both have not set the world on fire, and Dmaks ball use has been dreadful. But equally both will have been exposed to what is required at the highest level.

Gilbert is out injured.
Webster back.
Geary has a quad or similar, and so there is a chance that he will be out.
Longer hopefully back. If not then against the 206 cm Naismith Holmes should play. It would be useful to see him at the highest level at present, though his work at the VFL suggests that he still cannot read the play to a suitable level.
Membrey still suspended.

It is a pity that Rice injured his ankle this week, as I believe that his bigger frame would be well suited against the physical Swans.

However the Sandi watchers seem to think that White has been going ok at present.

Battle is an interesting one. It would be nice to see him get another game into while Membrey is out, but he was quiet against the and looked to struggle. Mind you being a forward the way our mids played would have been a hard task. Rowan has been displaying better form than Battle and is 3 years older. So this wee I would be tempted to play Rowan, and moreso if paired with Holmes as potentially Holmes TOG can be minimised so that Marshall does more of the following work when not playing forward.

SO

Out: Long Dmak Battle Hickey

In: White Webster Rowan Longer/Holmes

suspect the club may recall Dunstan or Acres though.

Here's a couple of KIDS I reckon should be in. Blake Acres. Age 21. Kid. Luke Dunstan. Age 22. Kid. Importantly both have form at a lower level to make their case for selection this week.

No problems with giving Battle, Long, Rice, D-Mac a game if the opportunity presents itself and they have the form to back it up. But do they?

We need to pick our strongest possible side while we are still an unlikely chance for the finals.

Interesting position, as there is also benefit in development and recruitment to making the finals to give exposure to the next level of pressure football. We also want players to earn games not be given them as it lessens the value. If you are North for example the story is different. Also what message does that send to the top liners and potential recruits ( Martin, Kelly, Whitfield etc) if we are in or just out the 8 and roll over by playing kids.

We are not an old list and i think form and position should dictate selection. Gilbert out - so we look at slightly taller defenders - Probably Webster in. Form wise McKenzie has had 2 poor weeks so out options in - Rice ( if ok) , White, or Acres if he is considered a wingman not back flanker. Long struggled but only 1 game so perhaps gets another , or Weller in, similar for Battle as not too many other 3rd tall options, Marshall perhaps but don't want to be too tall at SCG as not long ground and can get lost on flanks.

its a tough balance but i don't think we are in a position where we are bringing in a 28 -29 year old.

Yep. Perfect. That should see us lose the last 6 games by an average of 80 points. We're playing for draft picks aren't we?

STONECOLD AND SAINTERNIST - AS OF 8.25PM SUNDAY NIGHT, IF EITHER OF YOU POST TO OR ABOUT EACH OTHER THEN IT IS A ONE WEEK BAN FOR ONGOING DISPUTE. YOU HAVE BOTH HAD MULTIPLE WARNINGS TO CUT IT OUT.

Play to win every single game until you can't play finals. We haven't been able to win the gf since 1966
