Would anyone care
If one of our players were gay?
Do you think it would have an impact on the locker room at all?
Find it surprising that the league hasn't had any openly gay players as of it.

Re: Would anyone care
It's 2017 so not at all. Players don't come out because some supporters don't know what year it is, plus players sex lives are none of our business anyway.

Wouldn't give a stuff.
I'm sure the Saints have already had gay players in the past.

Re: Would anyone care
What if someone came out as openly asexual?
They just said, "look everyone. I haven't had any action in five years and I simply don't care."
Would anyone care about that?
Just not sure why sexual preference or activity is a big part of a person's make-up. For many people it is nothing anyway.

Why don't you think the players feel comfortable with coming out?

Re: Would anyone care
I don't care.
Not a problem.
The AFL is a microcosm of society, and reflects this society,
so it's not just likely, but it's probable that a percentage of AFL players are gay.
I worked in the Dept of Defence several years ago, for a long time,
and when Defence took an initiative to recognize same-sex relationships,
there were 2 officers- both majors- who applied for co-habitation allowances etc
within about a week of the announcement.
I say the gay footy players will keep under the radar for the forseeable future
because although there's strong support in the public domain, these guys (indeed maybe AFLW ladies)
still may not be sure about coming out.

Re: Would anyone care
I would only care if it was someone that I wanted to have sex with.
*Allegedly.

Re: Would anyone care
I am speculating here. I think being the first openly gay player carries with it quite a lot of pressure and media attention. Most players wouldn't care for the amount of attention they would get. That's just off the field. Then you throw in the idiots over the fence yelling garbage at them, at least short term.Con Gorozidis wrote:Good question. There is some positive impact to having openly gay sports stars - sadly it is still stigmatised, and the more common it becomes, the less of a news story it is, and no one will worry about what is a normal occurrence. But would be pretty hard work for that first lad. I think if a small number, even one player, came out as gay that a number would follow with less on their shoulders to worry about.

Re: Would anyone care
Nah, I don't think anyone cares. And if they do, no one needs folks like that! But, I think what's stopping someone is that thought of being 'The first openly gay player'... No longer defined simply by your footy career but your sexuality ... plus you'd have the parasitic footy media lobbing up at your door step trying to write a story about how people need to just let you live your life... so let us write a double page spread on it. But who knows... when one player finally does, 10 other players might stick their hand up too the next day.
Think of it this way... no one gave a flying F&$K what so ever about Ian Thorpe coming out and he's one of Australia's greatest ever Olympians.

Re: Would anyone care
I wouldn't care. As long as they don't make it compulsory. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

Yep. Good sensible response. I think it is probably along those lines. Would be s*** for the first few players unless they are incredibly mentally tough and have thick skins.shrodes wrote:I am speculating here. It's hard enough to build a career in the AFL without another distraction and unwanted attention from media and idiots. If someone did want to come out and promote pride and equality, I wonder if it might be easier to do after retiring?

Last year we hosted the pride match. The crowd seemed lower than expected. I reckon our supporter base is probably not ideal for this message it seems

Doesn't seem too. He seem's a popular lad
