What's really concerning is that we have virtually no injuries with really only Armo.
You see other sides still competitive with 10 or 12 on the injury list

Re: VFL RD 10- Sandringham Vs Coburg
Embarrassing performance against a team who quite honestly are not much chop, yet we could not get the job done.
Steele was a class above but does need to work on his kicking.
Freeman another who needs some work on his kicking but he took the game on and moved the best I have seen him. I see no physical reason whatsoever as to why he could not be promoted.
Marshall was very impressive played forward and back and can play the game. Took a heap of marks and is a nice kick.
O' Kearney is an accumulator just wins the footy, nothing stands out as an elite AFL trait but he is a good all round footballer.
White and Rice were okay although White does tend to bomb the ball. Rice was good although got beaten on the lead a few times late in the game.
Need to look at at our development program's as I do t think they are working.
Thought the rest were no good, and was quite frustrated by Ben Long. Sometimes you need to just take the footy and not try clever little taps.

Ben Long was supposed to be our McDonald-Tipungwuti. Our Rioli.
If he's gone backwards after getting recruited then it's a damning comment on our
development staff.

It is a very good point. Our playing list talent is not great. As many in the media have reported, we have no upcoming players that show true star potential and a number of other club lists have passed us. With all the early draft picks we had, the recruiting and list management hierarchy have let the club down with some very average and wasted picks. I place the blame there. We have a number of players who have not shown continued improvement and development and look like they have already reached their potential. We are a long way off from being a contender and were shown up quite badly against the better teams prior to the North game (which was quite lacklustre from both sides).

Quite clearly Sandy are not being coached to win VFL games!samuraisaint wrote:But how good were they really?Bernard Shakey wrote:Bailey Rice was good, not far a senior game.borderbarry wrote:For those that were at the game. who did play well beside Steele and Freeman?
Holmes took a strong mark and kicked a goal! How did he perform otherwise?
Also Rice did play or not?
Josh Battle and Rowan Marshall show plenty of promise.
Dmac was hampered by a corkie and Nick Coughlan looks like he may have a hammy.
Holmes will not be around next year.
I mean this is the second time in a few weeks we have lost to poor VFL teams with no AFL alignment. If they were playing well surely Sandringham not be losing to Coburg and Williamstown.
The decision to play McCartin in a second tier competition has backfired too, and although injuries are accidents I question the development of him at present. He needs to be playing alongside our best players in the seniors and to be coached by our senior coaches.
And while I'm at it I think this is an indictment on the decision to abandon having our own reserves side.
That's it - I'm off to have a bex and a good lie down.
It's all about what St Kilda want their listed players to achieve. It's a practice match!

Well why is Marshall still a rookie then? He should have been blooded by now.

What does St KIlda want their listed players to achieve?
Dont mark it. Dont touch it. Dont kick goals. Dont tackle. Dont win the ball. Dont pass to a team mate.
But make sure you get 80 minutes games time and then you can collect your salary! Hoorrah!
Some of these guys are on $15k a game!
Most are on at least $10k a game.

Re: VFL RD 10- Sandringham Vs Coburg
Long was a bit stiff. I've mentioned on other threads he was pigeon holed into an ineffective role of being a small forward who rotates off the bench. It was pointless selecting him if that's how they are going to use him. You watch him play the kid loves to run so put him in a position to succeed. Our coaching staff the last few seasons has been dreadful with doing that currently with Steele and formerly with Mccartin (playing up the ground), Templeton not playing as half forward, Sinclair being stuck in the forward pocket role. im not one to say the club is in crisis but the selection committee needs an overhaul. Lot of blokes playing on reputation and taking spots for granted. I'd like to see the club pumping games into Rice, Freeman, White and Long to develop this "depth" we have.stonecold wrote:Which one of his 2 AFL games are you talking about Welly?????WellardSaint wrote:That one game of Ben Long-Jacks Back wrote:We get Ben Long and Melbourne pick up Mitch Hannan from the bulldogs - go figure!Waltzing St Kilda wrote:Ben Long was supposed to be our McDonald-Tipungwuti. We are playing a GC VFL outfit. Sure, some players out weren't known to be outs earlier in the week but f*** me, unchanged!
Richo and our crew are incredibly timid with selections. This whole BS about holding Freeman back is a classic example. A very weak Suns at Etihad. What a perfect opportunity to debut him.

Re: VFL RD 10- Sandringham Vs Coburg
a couple of o servations from whT was a scrappy crowded affair:
Not sure if anyone takes contested ball stats in these games, but Freeman impressed me with his inside game. Very few uncontested receives in his numbers. Still did t feel he hurt the opposition much with his touches but continues to improve.
Most of Marshall's touches were in the 2nd and 3rd quarters when he moved to CHB. He lookes great with a free run at the ball. Didnt look like getting near it up forward - whether that's strenght or reading the play I'm not sure. Promising.
Steele stood out with his ability to find it and his poise with it. Showed that he could find time and space in the crowd in a way I havent seen him do at the top left el. More to come from Jack.
Long was disappointing in that he struggles to get enough of it. But, even on a dirty day, a couple of his touches split the game open in a very Rioli way. Haven't written him off yet.

Long is only 19.
Too early to write him off.
Needs to get more ball though.
