Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
Would not get excited about Hawks first rounder, don't forget we gave them pick 10 and will probably get something between 10-14 back. Present form and the games to come looks like our own pick will be top 5.

The trade was not our Pick 10 2016 for their first round pick from 2017.BadRossco wrote:Would not get excited about Hawks first rounder, don't forget we gave them pick 10 and will probably get something between 10-14 back.

Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
Well after Round 10 Hawks are now 14th.
GC have only played 9 games though and with CE on Qld next week they could after completing 10 games be above the Hawks too as WCE do seem to be an entirely lesser team on the road.

The trade was our original 2016 picks 10 and 68 for original 2016 picks 23 and 36 plus Hawthorn's 2017 first rounder.
These picks became 11, 63 and 25, 39 as the 2016 draft progressed.
In the draft we used 25 and 39 to obtain Ben Long and Josh Battle.
So we traded away the 2016 picks used at No 11 and 63 for Ben Long, Josh Battle and Hawthorn's 2017 first round pick.
Hawthorn' pick may slip just as 10 turned into 11. but providing Hawthorn finish outside the eight we will have gained Ben Long and Josh Battle for free.
The wisdom of this trade may well come down to how Long and Battle turn out in a few years time.
Should they fail and be delisted we will have gained and lost nothing.
Should either or both become a regular in the team then the trade will be a bonus.
It will also be a bonus if Hawthorn finishes further down the ladder.

Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
Or another possibility is that Bains had in mind a player, or players, that we needed to trade for that would require two first round picks in 2017 (or even 3 first rounders when you add in our 2018 pick).ace wrote:

.
That the Saints approached the Hawks with the deal and not vice-versa tends to IMO add weight to this possibility.
Whatever the possibilities I think it pretty fair to say that the Saints saw it as good value even of the Hawks had made the 8 this year. If they slip to bottom four then that would just make it even sweeter.

Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
Our draft pick's having a good night tonight so far ... 56 to 2, nearly half time
Always loyal
Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
Currently watching the Hawks take on Port Adelaide. Suspect that logically I should be barracking for them to knock off a team who is likely to be a competitor of ours for a finals spot. but I can't help feeling a sweet delight at every successive Port goal. Score currently 56 - 2. My bad?

All is right on the world again. Hawks to stink it up for the rest of season.
% back under the Blues and the second worst in the AFL.
Pick 2 more likely than Pick 5.

yeah.. BadRoscco must be on drugs tipping it will be pick 10-14saintsRrising wrote:All is right on the world again. Hawks to stink it up for the rest of season.

Clearly it will be a top 5 pick
I think they will end up ahead of Bris, Carl and possibly the Suns... (big game Haks vs Suns coming up)
So... Id say pick 3 or 4.. with 5 at the worst
But... it has been an uncertain season
Trading pick 10 for a pick 3 or 4 and getting a couple other picks thrown in... would be massive

Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
Brisbane and Gold Coast are likely to finish bottom 2. Carlton may also finish below Hawthorn.
I would not be surprised if the AFL give the Lions a priority pick so they get pick 1 and 2.
They could also get a compensation pick for Rockliff for picks 1 2 and 3.
So either pick 5 or 6 to us seems not too shabby.

Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
Possible but I think the priority will be more like pick 20 and 21 for Lions.SinCitySaint wrote:Brisbane and Gold Coast are likely to finish bottom 2. Carlton may also finish below Hawthorn.

So they might get 1,19, 20 and 21 depending on what happens with Schache and Rockliff I guess..
I guess 1 and 2 is possible.
If it was 1 2 3 I think the other teams might go feral.
This is a team that won three flags in recent times and keeps giving away their kids for nothing.

Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
I really love this post Ace - thanks - facts are illuminating and unarguable. However - I'd love you to explain this one to that dribbler David King and somehow have him not argue with you. Or he might just walk away for you and argue that we paid too much for Battle and Long when the Dawks do finish outside the eight!!!!ace wrote:saintsRrising wrote:The trade was not our Pick 10 2016 for their first round pick from 2017.BadRossco wrote:Would not get excited about Hawks first rounder, don't forget we gave them pick 10 and will probably get something between 10-14 back.

Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
Just looked at Hawthorn's run home. Even accounting for the fact that its an extraordinarily topsy turvy & even season, only 2 to 4 of their remaining games appear realistically winnable. Not to mention that once they accept they cannot play finals, they'd want early draft picks. That would see them finish with 24 to 32 points. That will probably see them finish in the bottom 4, perhaps 14th at the highest.

Re: Hawks 1st round pick watch
There are no feasible 'early draft picks' We have their first rounder, and someone else has their second. They come in with GWS's second rounder - so probably around 35ish allowing for slippage. They will want to win and win hard right up to round 23 to make the trade look better in their favour - imagine the horror (for them) if they finish bottom and realise they have traded the 2017 Number 1 pick, Long and Battle for our 2016 #10 and #68.Linton Lodger wrote:Just looked at Hawthorn's run home.
