Craig Davenport, is his club legacy the best of all time?

Post: # 1674693Post Joffa Burns »

Yes, Craig Davenport?
The guy that Bomba grabbed and shook over the fence at the G.

Has any saints player in history left a better legacy?

Craig Davenport traded to Carlton for #19 in 1995.
#19 selection Barry Hall

Hall traded to Sydney for #13 & #17
#13 Nick Dal Santo
#17 traded to Freo for Heath Black (Ended up at Geelong for Pops Kelly)
Imagine if we kept the pick!

Dal Santo departs FA to NM giving saints pick #25 which forms the base of the trade to secure Billy Longer.

Devo we salute you!

Don't want to laugh at Davenoprt (who had some skills we could use right now), but the
dude landed at Carlton directly after their premiership and quickly claimed he'd soon be
nailing down a midfield slot beside Greg Williams and Craig Bradley. In fact, he ended
up playing two games.

He was a real talent Devonport an amazingly accurate kick for goal. I remember he smashed Fitzroy one day with a heap of goals in one half but a little soft and didn't quite get there in the end.

According to my old man he had his jaw smashed to pieces by a Sydney player (Rod Carter or Bolton) in the reserves when he was young and was never the same.
He was certainly a talent and a lovely kick for goal, kicked the winner "Craven's on his own in the goal square" after the Ken Sheldon incident.

and that's the bottom line

In his first reserves game he kicked 11 goals on Mark Browning in Sydney. I also believe he actually stood out of football as a junior because he wasn't zoned to St.Kilda but wanted to play for us.

I stand corrected. It was Mark Browning who hit him. That would be right about the 11 goals.

I was at that game. The MCG was jam packed. Even opened up the members stand to let supporters in and many left outside when the gates were closed.

From memory 90 odd thousand attended.

Game doesn't appear in the greatest attendance thread though.

wikepedia says he kicked 5 goals in one qtr against WCE in Perth.

When he went to Bluescum, in a pre-season game for them, he got so many touches, that a commentator said
"this guy could be the replacement for the ageing Craig Bradley!"
but he only played one regular game, got cut end of year, Bradley played 6 more years and retired at age 37.

I remember the goal against the pies that won the match, after Sheldon grabbed him,
it was inspirational. I didn't actually go to that game, saw on TV

I was also at that game and I think it was Queens birthday with a huge crowd.
Makes you wonder how we have been adged out of the blockbuster games in recent years.
We also had some big games on Anzac day and now all the incumbents of these games seem to have a lifelong hold on them.
Little wonder that we don't have the financial clout of some of the teams.

It poses an interesting question - what is the longest chain of games played when linking players by trades (either for picks or other players)?

I remember that Devonport would always play on daicos and do a great job on him.

Will be traded at the end of the year for a pick that will be on-traded with one of our first rounders as part of the Kelly deal

Or not

Not sure this qualifies, Otiman, but what about the mist one-sided deal in history. Neville Fields traded to South Melbourne in exchange for Terry and Neale Daniher? Throw in Anthony, whose son Joe continues the line. Chris also a premiership player. The best part? Fields finished his career back at Essendon!

Me too. It was indeed on the Queen's Birthday holiday, in 1992. I don't think it got as many as 90,000. More like 80,000. But for some reason people were locked out. I remember going outside of the ground at half time and some people offered me money (as much $50) for my pass-out.

I think what he was trying to say was Carlton wanted Craig Devonport, but ended up with Lindsay Davenport.

Yes, this is correct, I was a statistician for the club at the time and at that game, I believe it was Mark Browning who was returning from a long injury break. It would have been around 1987, Devonport a 17 yo prodigious talent, was carving him up, Devonport kicked his 11th goal about half way through the last quarter, the ball went back to the centre, Devonport and Browning were jostling together on the half forward flank when Browning I think out of frustration elbowed him in the jaw, smashed it in several places, I honestly believe Devonport was never the same player after that, could have been a 250 gamer in my view.

I went to that game and was locked out.
So I went around to the MCG members and persuaded an MCG member (Saints supporter) to get me in as his paying guest.
I had the best seat in the house for a great game.
