Re: Kelly leaning to us !
Kelly or Whitfield for 2 first round picks (not hawthorns and a future 1st round pick) + Rockliff as a free agent = winning! Would rather two guns then one megastar i.e. Fyfe or Martin. That being said, it's a long way to go before we go Christmas shopping!

Give them this year's first and next year's firstDave McNamara wrote:"whether they are ready to use them is another thing" is an excellent point DH!Devilhead wrote:Seems to be a few other clubs with war chests filling fast - whether they are ready to use them is another thingDave McNamara wrote:Why would we offer the Wogans our two first round picks? Kelly will be out of contract. If he walks, we have the cap space to front load a contract to keep all other suitors at bay. And if he walks... the Wogans lose a No 2 draft pick for donuts. (And don't remind me of Luke Ball. )
They can have our No 2 draft pick from the Dawks, and think themselves lucky.
Bloody AFL bastard love child franchise.
Reckon we will want to hold on to that Hawks pick (if its between 1 and 4) and try and please GWS in other ways
And if (like Nuff Nuff) they aren't ready to use it but still do, then more fool them. Nuff Nuff is on the decline (after never going to have been good enough to win a flag). Them going all out to get a Kelly would be akin to when Carlscum got that Chicken Wing bloke. They weren't ready. Cost them Kennedy, and moved them back a few draft places by delaying their fall.
I also love your idea of keeping our Dawk's pick. Just can't see how(?) And ideas? Sure, we could walk Kelly to the preseason draft with a contract offer others can't match, but that would be an absolute last resort, IMHO. We seem to have a pretty good relationship with the Wogans. So I reckon that's worth maintaining... as we'll be shopping with them again.
I don't see any expectation of a second coming back so long as we keep hawks first

Re: Kelly leaning to us !
The chance of getting Kellly is a big reason why it is important for the Saints to make the finals this year.
GWS are unlikely to be anywhere near the $$$ that Saints and other clubs will be prepared to pay. That will have Kelly at least actually listing to offers.
So if we can look like being a team that will be playing finals with Kelly improving us we will look reasonably attractive.
If we plunge by losing to the other finals aspirants (Tigers, Dees, Essendon etc) this years GWS on less money may look to be more tempting for gaining football success. He may well figure a 2 year deal on good money will give him a great crack of a flag, and then can cash in fora huge contract after that.
I mean GWS are still second despite what for any other club would be a crippling amount of injuries.

I would trade our 2 first rounders for him in a heartbeat.remboy wrote:I'd love to get him but the cost is a factor. What would the Giants accept? As a minimum I'd think they'd want both our first rounders this year, which I think sounds high.
The other factor is how much does he want? If North have offered $1mill a year you think we'd need to be around that mark which seems high to me. Then again there's this talk about the salary cap going up 20% so maybe we just throw the kitchen sink at him and get it done.

No way.
Surely it depends on what picks?
I would not give up 2 and 9 for him.
But 12 and 10 sure.

A first round pick is anywhere between 1 and 18.
The Saints currently have 3 first rounders available for trade. 2 from 2017 and 1 from 2018.
Pick 2-5
Pick 8-10
Pick 8- 14
Now with the first several picks you are likely to get a good to very good player, but may not.
With picks 8+ it is only say 50/50 that you will get a good player, and are less likely to get one as good as Kelly.
So to get a player as good as Kelly guaranteed vs the chance as good as him, and in a high probability not at all I would certainly be willing to swap our two mid-first round picks for him ina heartbeat.
If our first pic drops as low as 2 then if we did a straight swap we would be lucky. As guaranteed elite with a few years under his belt is a lot surer a return that a kid at pick 2.
If pick 5 GWS would probably want something else back.

Re: Kelly leaning to us !
It,s possibly an unfair year to use, but it's Kelly's year so I'll use it.
1 Tom Boyd
2 Josh Kelly
3 Jack Billings
4 Marcus Bontempelli
5 Kade Kolodjashnij
6 Matthew Scharenberg
7 James Aish
8 Luke McDonald
9 Christian Salem
10 Nathan Freeman
11 Dom Sheed
12 Ben Lennon
13 Patrick Cripps
14 Cam McCarthy
15 Zak Jones
16 Darcy Lang
17 Michael Apeness
18 Luke Dunstan
Looking at that how many combos of two players would you trade for Kelly? Not as many as you would knock back I'd say.
I,d hope it's a first rounder and a second rounder.
Two first round draft picks is a big payment.

Re: Kelly leaning to us !
Using Treloer as a benchmark i would think a mid range first rounder in 2017 and our first rounder in 2018 will be what it costs to get him , may be some steak knives either way. Only other thing maybe if Longer or Hickey is thrown in to the deal ( just saying not recommending) . He is quality and gives us an A grader with 3 years in the system already . Will need to pay to get quality .

Re: Kelly leaning to us !
We should retain at least one first rounder this year
If the have say Hawks pick at #5, our own at #9 and GWS finishes with say #14
I would consider
5 & 9 for 14 & Kelly
Would prefer 9 and next year's 2nd rounder for Kelly
He is really good but he's no Fyfe/ Dangerfield

Is it true that GWS were interested in Longer but Longer baulked at going to Sydney?
Shame we missed out on that when we had the chance.
What about Longer + pick 3 for Kelly and we keep our pick 10 plus trade paddy for a pick 6.
Add: Kelly, 6.
Retain: 10
Lose, 3, Longer, Paddy

I am neutral.
Think he could be good. But if someone gave us a good offer wed need to look at it.
Anything over a pick 10 and I'd tell them to walk.
Just matter of weighing up the risks involved. Paddy is no certainty at this point in time. How far off is open to debate.
