Changes v Dogs

Post: # 1672547Post bigcarl »

Bruce needs to come back in and I don't care that he got two touches or whatever if was for Sandringham. He's important for structure and a key part of the chemistry of the team.

In: Bruce
Out: Newnes (concussion)

Bruce and Lonie? Cant we do better than that? Bruce does not deserve a game after his dismal performance on Liam Jones at the weekend.

Must reward performance therefore Savage comes in. Bailey Rice must be close also.

Outs : - Pressure on Joey, Weller, Mckenzie not a back flanker so either put on wing or out as disposal hurts,

Joey is not doing well.
Ditch Joey and replace with Savage;
DMack stays so he can learn from last week, he will be much better this weekend.
Weller gets named as emergency, but comes in late, just to scare him

Not sure who else can come in

With our season still very much alive, in a very even competition, I would not expect any changes from last week.

The first place for selection pressure is to put it on last week's side to respond.

The listing of players receiving votes from last week was correctly restricted to just a handful (and I exclude Geary because he was ordinary, playing to his limitations when the loss of Webster, then Newnes required a response).

The old axiom "All played well" was definately NOT the case - and we duly lost and lost comprehensively as Sydney's superior spread of performers became just too much for our handful of performers.

Until Armitage, Hickey and Freeman are AFL ready from their interruptions and someone such as White knocks the door down at VFL level we have what we have - acknowledging that Newnes will virtually be an addition this week and Webster is improving, now not losing his feet in a contest as much but still needing to improve.

As I have put elsewhere, we need to improve to a position where all players contribute with ball in hand.

And in maintaining pressure

Longer will survive in Hickey's absence - but, apart from rucking contests, we just can not use Longer on the football field.

Being one down can be glossed over by Roo roaming the mid-field as a "relief target", looking for that mark to stabilise and re-set structure.

We just can not kick to or handball to Longer.

The only possible change therefore is to re-include Bruce to free Roo to the mid-field, fitness allowing which does not appear to be the case.

It will therefore be up to the 22 selected last week to acknowledge the deficiencies and respond.

If they do not, then changes should be considered - and some papers marked.

Bruce? Sandi game reports did not seem that flah on the big fella and I am a Bruce fan.

If Newnes is out.

We need better ball users. So in Savage and Rice who have both been playing very well over a number of games.

Use Savage to replace Dunstan in the outside mid role. Savage is quicker and is a much better ball user.

Rice to take over Newnes role.

OUT: Newnes (Conc) Dunstan
IN: Savage Rice

Rice has really turned himself around this season. Surely he gets a turn in the seniors soon?

Thing about Bruce is that he wasn't really dropped for poor form. He'd been competing well and probably doing the job asked of him in crashing packs and bringing the ball to ground.

It seemed to me to be more a case of rewarding Paddy for good VFL form.

Last season we had no problems playing the both of them, plus Membrey, in the same forward line. Of course Riewoldt was a lot more mobile then

Why is Newnes out with concussion?

Jayden Hunt was knocked out for a good few minutes against Adelaide and played on the weekend against North

Out - Dunstan
In - Minchington

Agree that Bruce should come in for structure but it would mean Paddy going out .... problem is Paddy needs games

Would like McKenzie to stay in - started poorly against Swans but got better as the game wore on

Monty could do with a rest - if so the logical replacement is Savage

Jones is apparently killing it down back for the Northern Blues - change in position from forward to back has helped - likely to replace Rowe this week so we will see if his improvement is the real deal ......... not that we care anyway

Best comment so far this week.

I put some in bold because I agree.
DMack was just getting used to the pace of AFL again, would be a backward step to drop him.
Keep him in, he's going to be much better against the Doggies, now that he's had time to review what he did and where he can improve.
Savage has done well in the scooby-doos, bring him back and give him a chance to redeem himself, he deserves it

From what I saw it was poor form as his marking had declined as was his total disposal count.

His last 2 games in total only added up to 5 marks and 14 disposals.

Yes he was working hard, but he was off his game which equals poor form.

One thing I would say about Bruce, regardless of his total disposals, marks and goals, is that structurally he is very important. You are guaranteed a physical contest in which he will most likely not be outmarked and will bring the ball to ground. He has a huge tank so he can do this all day.

tony74 suggested that "maybe Bruce just needs to be managed   "
he had put those emoji's in his post too
Hamill needs to leave the club, his forward tactics sure ain't working.

I was really disappointed with Monty's game against the Swans- lacked dash, and disposal poor plus he gave his man too much room to move.

The problem with Savage is that he can not get his own ball - and it will be hot in the kitchen v WB so we can not afford the passengers we had last week

I would drop McCartin. He was a passenger. Bruce is never a passenger.

However, that would invite trouble in the form of media vultures wanting to make a failure of McCartin.

Tough call. But against the dogs, I don't think McCartin provides enough dynamism.

Minchington should be in the team.

They seemed pretty happy with DMac.

Newnes is more likely to play than miss.

What I'd like
IN: Minchington, Bruce
OUT: Dunstan, McCartin

What we'll get, well, I don't want to have a stab. Quite a few possibilities.

At his best he is a good outside player when the team is actually being accountable and taking it up to the opposition with contested possession. When not, Montagna is found wanting. Best exponent of 'bruise-free' footy in the team.
