Still happy with McEvoy trade

So we got Dunstan and Savage for McEvoy.

Both are now VFL players but helped develop other players during the past 2 seasons and deserved their spot.

Our game and team has moved past these two, but they have been invaluable in the rebuilding of our club.

I don't think either Savage or Dunstan is necessarily a bust. They may find their way back in time, probably will. It's just a matter of timing really.

Dunstan's still very young and has a lot of improvement left in him. Savage has played some really good football for us.

He has limitations, but I think there's enough there to suggest he has a reasonable AFL career in front of him.

There's also a big difference between being a VFL player and playing in the VFL due to form, coming back from injury, etc.

Dunstan and Savage have played plenty of very good AFL games and I'm sure that they will again.

I can't think of one moment where I have missed McEvoy being in RWB to be honest.

Rate Dunstan a lot. Got Acres too with the slide up the draft.

Savage I don't see as part of the future but has been good during he transition.

Prefer Longer to McEvoy. Big Mac was tremendous around the ground but not a very good ruckman.

Regardless of Dunstan and Savage's current form, they still may have a lot to go in their respective careers. Both players have also played important roles in our rebuild.

Yes he thrashed the 193 cm Pedersen who is a forward filling in as a ruck due the rucks being injured at Melbourne.

Did well against WCE. Again no rucks.


The Saints are churning through players, and have traded for even more picks and players to accelerate that churn. They have kept churning to keep finding players who will make our 22 better. Most players we have acquired, and will acquire, will not make it. Those that prosper will help give us another crack at a flag.

Simply put Big Ben is not a player that gives you an advantage over other teams. So he was part of the churn. He is a useful player, not a good player.

It matters little about any one player, or one trade. What matters is that overall we keep improving our best 22 and some extra depth to support them and to buffer against injuries.

Longer and Hickey both have more upside than Ben. Longer is already a better ruckman, and Hickey is a better follower and is also probably a better ruck too. And even if they both flopped, then you keep looking fr someone better.

I'm of the opinion that Savage and (to a lesser degree) Dunstan, have not run their race with the club JUST yet. They are good players to have in reserve. Their time may well come again, should they be required to step in to the side. Depth is a very important commodity, if we are to mount a challenge for the flag.

No that is not accurate. The Hawks did not have to acquire a pick to elevate Ceglar

Picks to be used on rookie upgrades have no value and effectively are only limited by the number of players that club takes off their list. Clubs can just adding picks for rookie promotions after whatever their last pick will be.

Hawks could have used pick 150 on Ceglar! They did not need to trade in any pick to get him.

So basically what it means is that the Hawks saw no value in pick they traded in. None . Zip. Nadda...

For all intent and purposes the Hawks basically did not use Pick 59.

You've also got to factor in that these trades - Mcevoy, Goddard, Dal Santo - were all designed to push us down the ladder to get the really high picks. Losing our big ruckmen, classy mid ball deliverer, and penetrating kicker from the back was always going to see us sink. So its not just the immediate picks back but they also helped us get pick 1, 3 & 5.

I'll complicate it further by saying that if we hadn't traded McEvoy we wouldn't have used pick 25 on Longer. We already had Hickey. We could have used pick 25 on Zach Merrett.
So without the trade we could have: McEvoy, Hartung, Merrett
With the trade: Savage, Dunstan, Acres, Longer

Dunstan still has plenty of currency. This patch could turn out to be a very important part of his development. The coach rates him and he's still maturing. His skills are pretty good. Savage, on the other hand, seems to have slipped down the order. He may be there purely as a depth player now. I think DMac, Rice and White should be given an opportunity ahead of him. His body language and expression after the Zebs game on the weekend said a lot. He had the look of a condemned man.

Thats not true as Savage played in the GF they lost to Sydney before being traded and he has improved since. Would Hawthorn of had to sell the farm for Mitchell if they had a up and coming Dunstan?

That's an interesting call for a few reasons; I agree that they have been invaluable to the rebuild process and I'm still happy with the McEvoy trade however I don't agree that the game and team has moved past either player.

Dunstan is 22 and has (pardon the pun) shouldered more than atlas since coming into the AFL system - he's pretty much been the main man alongside Jack and Armo. We also need to be mindful of the fact that he is coming off a shoulder reconstruction from last year. He has areas on his game that he needs to improve on and I'm positive that he will. When Seb Ross was the same age, I'm pretty sure he'd have been in a very similar boat to Dunstan and look at him now! Dunstan will be a key member of our next flag and I'd be very unhappy to be proven wrong!

Savage is 26 and has found himself out of the team to work on improving his defensive traits and to focus on using his strengths more during the game (run and carry whilst also using his laser boot more often). Jimmy Webster and Roberton have both been fantastic this year so it's understandable that he's having a tough time at the moment cracking into the team. Savage would easily be in the top 5 kicks at our club, and precise kicking is gold.

Both players have responded at Sandy since being dropped and I'm sure both will take their chance with both hands when they next get a call up. To win a flag you need a best 30-35 not a best 22 ('09/'10), and this is the most balanced St Kilda list that I've seen in my 29 years which has no ceiling for improvement!

Sav would not have been part of their 2013 - 15 plans otherwise he wouldn't have bee given away as steak knives in a trade deal, and he wouldn't have agreed to that trade from a premiership favourite to a bottom team if he was an important player in their set up.

Dunstan and Mitchell should not be mentioned in the same sentence. One is a gun, who is leading a b&f by a mile and is on 600k and averages 34 possessions a game
The other is in the VFL and in the afl averages 17
There is a fair gulf between the two...


Selling the farm is interesting too

Pick 14 for Mitchell was a bargain imo

They overpaid for Jaeger

It was a reasonable trade for both parties for what they wanted/needed
